Be Your Best Gardener
Приєднався 15 бер 2022
Hi my name is Kelly and I'm a lifelong gardener and currently have 3 hydroponic systems, a small patio at our current apartment and a backyard at a new house!
On this channel I will be sharing my hydroponic gardens, tips and tricks for growing hydroponically and my favorite recipes using the plants I grow. I eat gluten free and dairy free because of autoimmune diseases. I also will be sharing videos from my apartment patio and my new house garden. I focus mostly on native, perennial plants for Zone 7b (Northern Maryland).
A bit more about me: I'm a 5th grade science teacher and autoimmune disease warrior (Cohn's, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriasis) and I have Endometriosis and Eczema. I'm originally from Washington State where I lived for 30 years. I'm an avid hiker and nature explorer. Most of my work experience before becoming a full time, certified educator was in environmental education. Currently, I live in northern Maryland with my husband and my corgi, Sylvie.

What type of green been did you plant? I could not makeout what you said.
@@boby4751 sorry, in some videos I put the name up or have a tag. I'll do better with that. It's a Mascotte Bean, bush variety. I bought mine from Burpee Seeds but others sell them.
@@beyourbestgardener8767 Thanks, but you do not need to be sorry for forgetting something.
@@boby4751 ❤️🤗
Where did you get your hydroponic system?
@@IAMGiftbearer It's a Rise Garden. It's a version 1. The version 2 is closest to it that you can buy now. Haven't heard great things about the new version 3.
Thanks for sharing
@@GtJrGrowsItAlaska you're welcome, thanks 🤗
I'm an outdoor veggie gardener, never tried hydroponics. Have you ever tried trellising your cukes? From what you know of this hydroponic system, do you think you could DIY it?
@@joburd_797 people do DIY with PVC. I'm just not that handy. I do like how easy this system is to clean, which I've heard it is one of the easiest. I could install one of my trellises on that back part of my garden to hook my cucumbers to. Right now I'm using the string which works. Might do that though, it's a good idea.
@@beyourbestgardener8767 Pre-made trellises off amazon work great. What variety of cuke are you using? I'm gonna try out a parthenocarpic variety this coming spring since I was a complete newbie this year.
Your gardens are beautiful! and the new tomatoes look so cool, hope they taste great as well. Thank you for your recommendation of the cal - mag from last video, I used it for my pepper plant and the fruits got bigger and way tastier. I did my first harvest a couple of weeks ago and they were awesome, wish I can share pictures in the comment LOL.
@@Shaimaa-ArtStudio Thank you! I'm glad the CalMag helped. I just cleaned my water and just remembered to put some in today! It definitely helps. Glad your gardens are taking off 😊
Where do you get the puck tomatoe seeds and the cucumber seeds. They look awsome.
@@1turf32 I got them from Victory Seed Company. Definitely worth it. I'm going to grow them again for sure!
@beyourbestgardener8767 Thank you
Nice setup and video, but you repeat cucumber way to many times.
@@boby4751 thank you for the feedback. I grow pretty much the same plants in my garden so if I didn't repeat them there wouldn't really be much to talk about. I've thought about not talking about the same plants but then I'd just not do the videos at all. Do you have a suggestion?
Where did you get the little green things you have the string tied to?
@@dawnsample5689 Amazon. They're called "vine clips." I'll find the link and post it when I do my modifications video 😊
Thank you!!! And thanks again for your videos! Very helpful
@@dawnsample5689 of course! Happy to help 😊
How often are you supposed to calibrate the Apera pH meter? Once a week? Once a month? Or is there a reminder or alert on that specific model?
@@juliuspark8924 I don't think mine shows any sort of reminder. As for frequency. You should calibrate monthly at the most. I DO NOT do this 😅 I'll be straight up honest. I try to remember to calibrate mine but I forget a lot and the process is tedious. I will check my readings with my liquid kit. If they don't match up I calibrate. For hydroponics, an error of 0.5 is acceptable for a regular person doing this as a hobby.
Beautiful harvest! your rise garden corner is gorgeous! I bought my rise garden after watching your videos and I prefer it over aerogarden systems. rise, in smaller space you can grow way more plants and it look beautiful. I had trouble using the powder rise garden nutrients tons of sediments! probably user error. I switched to the General Hydroponic trio bottles and I think they are working? it is too early to tell. I am growing Kandil pepper, it is a type of pepper that looks like green bell peppers but way smaller, and I had tons of fruits in the plant but they stop growing in size, listening to you talking about plucking extra flowers and fruits to let the plant concentrate on growing a certain number of fruits sounds like I can apply that to my peppers. Always enjoy your videos and give Sylvie a big snuggle 🥰
@@Shaimaa-ArtStudio thank you so much!! This is so nice 😊 I definitely like the look of the system for sure! Ya I was struggling with those bottles, mostly because some days I just don't have the time/energy. GH dry isn't bad for sedimentation but it's definitely worse than the liquid. I want to see if the filter socks help. As for the pepper, I'll look into it. Few reasons the fruit might be stunted is no Cal/Mag or a low P/K. I sometimes have my jalapeno blossoms fall off and I notice it when my EC is bit low (peppers are very hungry feeders) or if I haven't put Cal/Mag in in a while. Keep me updated! 😊
@@beyourbestgardener8767 Thank you for the tip I will definitely look into the Cal/Mag levels, this is the first time I ever grow anything, I lived in city apartments all my life and still do!. those systems are great to have at least fresh herbs, parsley and cilantro from the grocery store taste like grass clipping to me LOL
@@Shaimaa-ArtStudio ya I don't measure the Cal/Mag, just general Electrical Conductivity but an EC meter is good to have. I just put some in about once a month 😊 Haha, grass clippings 🤣
Maybe your not using enough nutrients... You also need the bloom that goes with this nutrient for fruiting plants
@@stacijones6706 definitely using enough 😊 I check my EC regularly. It's more likely that I just wasn't mixing them correctly. I also do use the bloom for my flowering plants because I have two separate gardens.

Excellent video and thanks for posting. I too have two full three tier Rise Gardens, two countertop Rise Gardens, and one no-name brand with a trellis for growing vine plants. In addition to what you expertly spell out, I have picked up a few tricks along the way. 1. The amount of pH adjustment solution needed to add will change based on the total volume of water in your system. 2. The fuller the system, the more stable it is. Adjustments are needed less frequently. 3. Sprouts have less of an impact then full grown plants. Larger, full-grown plants will consume more nutrients, which directly impacts the PPM and pH. So depending on the mix of plant sizes, you may need to make more adjustments. 4 I get much higher yields when I keep the pH closer to the plant needs. So I keep like plants together. I have one system at pH 5.7, three systems at pH 6.0, and one system at pH 6.4. All plants grow super fast and produce high yields. 5. Spread out your sprouts. Don't sprout too many plants at the same time. This way you can maintain a continuous harvest. 6. have fun with it. Its actually super easy.
@@JamesHarris-rl5zj great advice, thanks for adding it 😊 when I'm not exhausted after a day/week of teaching I really try to do all that except I keep my pH as a whole closer to 6 to make my life a bit easier and everything does great 😊. I agree that people have a tendency to overcrowd their gardens for sure!
Ohhh no. Sorry to hear you are having problems with your nutrients. I had major issues with the dry nutrients. The sediment was terrible as well as they clogged my tubes. So I just did a deep clean and switched to the liquid general hydroponics. So i hope they grow ok! Also my mascotte bean plants grow so tall into the lights how do you keep it trimmed without killing it so they do not grow into the lights? Thanks again appreciate all your videos!!
@@dawnsample5689 Hey! Ya I agree the sedimentation is worse but I was just not doing the liquid correctly. I just would run out of time or rush and it just wasn't working for me 😕 Mascotte beans shouldn't need to be trimmed if they're Mascotte bush beans. If they're growing past 12-14 inches, maybe too much nitrogen? I never trim mine. Glad the videos are helpful 😊
the hydroponic nutrients that I use drop the PH by ridiculous amounts. My water is quite basic but the nutrients can drop it by 2 or more PH .. its wild.
@@ianwilliams7740 I had this same problem! It was so annoying. I tested a tub of nutrients and it was really obvious. Ya my water runs almost 8 and it can happen for sure. I usually don't add any pH down until the next day.
Looking good lots of progress! I've been looking for a dwarf micro tomato variety that consistently gives good yield. I have some plants that just don't produce much, others do great. I keep falling back to microgreens because of how easy they are.
Makes sense! Ya I haven't grown microgreens. As far as dwarf cherry tomatoes, I have that down! Red Robins are by far the best. I'm just trying to find a good mini slicer. So far I really liked the Thorburn Terracotta. I need to try it again to test flavor again. It was okay but it was slow to start because I had issues during it's initial growth.
I did it exactly as you said and stored it in the fridge too. Maybe it was my seeds 🤷♀️
@@My70thYear very possible. I'd get brand new seeds. Johnny's has a good germination rate.

@@patriciabeaulieu7553 thank you and I hope you enjoy the garden. Definitely keep it simple. I'm a teacher so I just do the basics and it's still great! No need for all the fancy stuff for sure ☺️ The trellis is "wire cube storage" that I bought on Amazon. If you search that on Amazon, they'll come up. They're a bit tricky to snap together but you can get around that with zip ties, which is what I used to attach them to the unit. I plan to make a video showing my modifications, so hopefully that'll help. I'll make that one this summer before school starts back up ☺️

My tomato plant was started in soil I got from a store but the leaves keep going bad and it's only growing g 1 tomato.?any idea the issue?
Hmm, can you describe the leaves going bad? Ironically one of the common problems with tomatoes in soil is over watering and then the stem rots at the base or you'll see the leaves curl. Yellowing leaves is a common indicator of low nitrogen.
@@beyourbestgardener8767 I took it from soil and put in hydroponic.was first brown spots on leaves then the whole stem rots…keeps throwing off new growth and when it does the rest browns n falls off
@@beyourbestgardener8767 other tomato plant I started in the hydroponic from seed is fine and has no issue
@@CindyOkike it's definitely a type of stem rot. Tomatoes can suffer from multiple kinds and it might be bacterial, which is why it's spreading to the leaves. I've never actually put a tomato from soil to hydroponics. Have you only tried this once? Might just be this one tomato. It's definitely more common to go from hydroponics to soil.

Nice to find your channel. I have a large outdoor garden up in Montana and I start so many plants in my aerogardens.

@@beyourbestgardener8767 honestly pretty much everything except root veggies and onions. I end up getting them out of hydroponics and into dirt under the grow lights before they go outside because our last frost date is June 1st and they get too big so fast in hydroponics. Have you tried aspabroc? I did some in my Aerogarden and it was really nice. Gave a more continuous harvest of little broccoli with long tender stems. I really enjoyed it. And it was fun to grow.
I'm pretty sure I bought this one to try! ☺️ I might do beans on the bottom as an experiment for a bit and then try it.
Love hydrophonics because I live in sw florida where bugs are crazy. And plus I can grow things inside like lettuce when too hot outdooors
I agree, that's why I like it too! Definitely allows more people to garden ☺️
What meter do you use for nutrients?
For EC? Like to check the level of nutrients? I use a HANNA. I got it from Rise during their dry nutrient trial.
@@beyourbestgardener8767 I wonder if they still have it?
@@marilynearl6887 oh sorry I should have clarified. They sent it to me. It wasn't something they sell. I tried to find the same brand online but I can't. Most EC meters will work though. If I find it I'll definitely share the link!
I can send you my Google Doc file of 30 micro tomatoes with info and heights. Let me know if you want it.
Maybe once I get through these ones ☺️ The height info though is so important! I'm usually digging for that. I'll keep everyone updated on the Bing too!
Pinetree catalog lists Little Bing as 6-8 inches tall.
Ya, I've seen it grow multiple feet tall when others have grown it but I'll still give it a go ☺️
I tried to grow Napoli tomatoes which I'm not sure are the same as the little Napoli hybrid you mentioned. But, I think I got bad seeds (or at least not the seeds advertised) because the plants were huge and the fruit looked like cherry tomatoes. Really sad and annoying but I can't wait to see how some of yours do. I"m always on the look out for small varieties with full sized fruit. And I know you said you were not a fan of the heartbreaker but they sound like they might be a perfect salsa tomato with their meaty texture which is what I am looking for so I might have to give those a try.
Oh interesting. Ya I'll be trying that one but right now I'm working on the Sarandipity. The dora is just like that, most like a paste tomato than a juicy/watery tomato. It comes in red and orange. Definitely give it a try if you're looking for a meaty cherry tomato :)
What variety of cauliflower is that? I'd love to try it in an Aerogarden Bounty.
It's a Baby Cauliflower. I got the seeds from Rise but you can also buy them from Pinetree Garden Seeds ☺️
@@beyourbestgardener8767 Darn, I just got a big order from Pinetree including the Fioretto variety and missed the Baby variety.
@@carolinehonse35 oh darn! Ya and shipping can be a big high. I do the same thing and try to buy it all for a year.
Sorry if you mentioned this but where did you get the garden shelves/beds or was it built?
Sure!! These are Rise Gardens ☺️ They're a bit back ordered at the moment but they're great! I love that they look like furniture and they're pretty easy to maintain.
Thanks for the tour grat job. Love your gardens and all the education.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you find them helpful ☺️
Try the Dwarf tomatoes from TomatoFest. I'm growing the Firebird Sweeet. The plant is about 2 feet tall and starting to flower. The leaves get a bit big but I just trim them.
Thank you! Looks like that tomato is indeterminate. Did you grow it it's entire life cycle and it only got to 2 feet? I'll definitely check out the website too. I have a list of about 6 varieties I'm planning to try. I talk about them in my next video.
I'm very happy to find your channel. I'm also always looking for the perfect hydro tomato and love the thrill of the hunt.
@@carolinehonse35 aww thank you, that's so kind 🤗 Finding the right tomatoes is definitely a fun experiment!
