    Hi Henry I was not disputing that. Merely pointing out that the Royal Marines Commandos adopted it which would have been post WW2. It was I guess a nod to where the term commando was first used. Also I am vary aware of the contribution of the SAF in WW1 as I visited Delville Wood and the SA memorial last year

      So, you fought for your people and then abandoned them? That's a very odd thing to be proud of.

    There is more French in it then one should think. Sari is Dutch but Marais is French. No doubt she was of French Protestant origin. The Hugenotes came with the Dutch to the Cape and many of them went into the wine production in Fransch Hoeck ( corner of the French).

    Thank you, France, for supporting us in the South African War of 1899 to 1902. I wish I was not too old to join the Foreign Legion. I would have done so with a smile if I had knew about it earlier. Just as a gesture of gratitude and in an effort to support the French Republic. My family were huguenots killed by the vile Royal house of Bourbon. Vive le Republique! Vive le France!

    We Afrikaans Boers Salute the French who fought in the Boer War with the Boers against the British. And the foreign legion for adopting the Afrikaans song My Sarie Marais as their Anthem. My Sarie Marais is so vêr van my af, ek hoop om haar weer te sien! Sy het in die wyk van die Mooirivier gewoon, nog voor die Oorlog het begin !! Oh Bring my terug na die ou Transvaal, daar waar my Sarie woon !

      In fact, Sarie Marès is a legion adopted song but it is also the traditional song of the EMIA. EMIA is a military officers high academy, cadets of this school are all experienced NCO which have succeeded in a difficult exam to become Lieutenant. BTW Thanks for your comment :)

    @reprimand33 It aparently started as an American folk song called Sweet Ellie Rhee. But I do think it's cool that the Brits and the French have adopted the South African version "Sarie Marais"!

    • @gideonroos1188
      @gideonroos1188 7 років тому

      mjribes I think the reason the song has become so popular is because it tells the story of a simple soldier and his loning for home, and his love which drives him onward both to keep fighting and to keep living. A human song that shows that even in the midst of war, even the most hardened soldier is still just a human being.

    But but but its a Boer War period Afrikaans language South African song. I know there were French volunteers fighting with the Boer Forces but not that many to justify this song being part of the music repertoire of the French Armed Forces? There must be an explanation

    • @gideonroos1188
      @gideonroos1188 7 років тому

      swannie52 I think it's because of the story the song tells: of a soldier longing home to his love, both which are his reasons for fighting.

      Thinus the melody may be from the US but the words, Sarie Marais or Sari Mare is definitely from Transvaal. I believe this song made its way to Europe in the First World War. Some British units use it as well.
