A few things that I didn’t mention that I do want to say: 1. I HAVE had very successful nights DJing with this style with no problems (most nights I’ve DJed I stuck with this style and it goes well, let’s say 95% of the time). If I was DJing and this style wasn’t working too well, then I would obviously switch it up and try to keep the energy higher and the night at a faster pace. However, open format can obviously vary dramatically depending on where you are. I live in the Washington D.C. area, and open format in most bars and clubs in the area are very high energy and fast paced out of necessity (or else the crowd could simply leave and go to a different bar. Also note: I DJ in Maryland but not in the D.C. Area.). This mix is really meant to represent how I would DJ open format at any venue. This style works well in many settings, but as a representation of my style, it is clear that this would not work well in those fast paced settings. 2. After watching this video, I realize that I make it sound like I am “scared” of the crowd or “unconfident” in my abilities, but that is not really the case. When I DJ I obviously trust myself and play what I want, but it WILL be, to some extent, scaled back. Songs like Hypnotized, You Are My Life, Rumble, Don’t Let Me Down, etc. would almost never make any sense to be played at a high energy bar (especially given the description of the bar setting I mentioned in point no. 1), but the point of this mix was not only to imagine playing what I want if I wasn’t paying attention to the crowd, but also If I wasn't really concerned with the crowd. I would still try to keep the energy up and play recognizable songs, but with no restrictions I would be free to include slower and/or emotional songs that I would never play when trying to keep a crowd engaged.
