      In Japan you can buy them for almost every movie. Basically behind the scenes stuff, interviews and so on. For slightly complex stories you might even get a diagram of the character constellations.

      I think now it's officially only available in Japan. Now it's probably only available on U-Next and the BD will come in march. All of course without subtitles. And as far as I know, there are no fansubs either (at least not for the whole show), so you might have to wait a little longer. I heard some rumors that a western release is just a matter of time, but nothing has been announced yet.

    Hello Michael! Nice channel with cool videos on japanese cinema! I am interested in the life in Japan as a Westerner. Is it allowed to ask you some questions? * How did the Japanese people react to the election of Trump? Are there many Trump fans in Japan? Or are most Japanese people not affected a lot by the US elections? * Is "Dubai chocolate" also a big food craze in Japan like in Europe? * Are Western horror movies like "Terrifier 3" or "The Substance" shown in Japanese movie theaters? * Have you ever been in a love hotel with a Japanese gf or bf? * Do Japanese look down on Koreans, even though the massive cultural impact of K-Pop and K-Drama? Or are they not such a big thing in Japan? * Are Franco-Belgian comics like Tintin or Spirou known and sold in Japan? Are Western comic characters like Smurfs, Moomins or Wombles known in Japan? * Do young Japanese women also get "tramp stamp" tattoos like in Europe? Or are tattoos not as common as in the West? * Does a Japanese Elon Musk exist?

    I have mixed feelings about the movie and have been actually surprised at the amount of absolute praise it has received. It had some great action scenes and special effects. However, to me it felt like a very Hollywoodized action/adventure film. The bones of the story felt so familiar, ya know? It's that common underdog story where they need to overcome some fear to unlock their inner potential and to triumph against nearly insurmountable odds in the end. I also found the characters to be annoying and their acting to be a little over the top. I'm not new to Japanese film, but probably haven't seen as much as you. According to Letterboxd, I've seen 62 Japanese movies, and Godzilla Minus One feels much different than the rest, and not in a good way. It feels like a Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich film, but of course with the superficial change in scenery. I noticed a little bit of the nationalistic politics stuff but for me, it wasn't on my mind as much when thinking about it. I will agree that they were all too pumped and eager to be fighting at the end. They also didn't handle the trauma with war very well either. <SPOILER AHEAD> Another random thing about the movie that bothered me is the fake out death of the woman he loves. I believe her "death" was at least a partial motivator for the protagonist to achieve his goals in the end, but then we find out, oh she's not actually dead. Bad writing there. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts on the recent Godzilla movies!

    • @CompendiumofDiscomfort
      @CompendiumofDiscomfort 2 місяці тому

      I think, what you wrote there is totally fair to say. The director Yamazaki seemingly recently said that his favorite monster movie is Spielberg's War of the Worlds and that may explain why it feels so Hollywood and why that ending turned out the way it did. But that surely helped with the international success. And I totally agree with you, even if I ignore the politics, there's so much that's not particularly good, that the universal praise is baffling. But believe me, there are plenty of Japanese movies that are much better than this one.

    I thought about the dream sequence a lot. I found it really confusing the first time and it presents this idea that there will be more fakouts later on and it confused my friends too. I think the interpretation that she wants to reject society and live in a world where she can just fight her way through any problem is valid. but after watching it I couldn't help but agree with the real purpose be to show she wants a better relationship with Chisato. I think the apology sequence also shows this is a little too because she talks about not wanting to lose her only friend over her issue. I think it isn't even that their relationship is so bad that she wishes it were better though, but more that she wishes she was different. In every other scene where they interact Chisato is like she is in the dream sequence, so she is the same, the difference is Mahiro. They don't really joke around the same through the rest of the movie because Mahiro is so much more dismissive and stubborn. She wants that back and forth and to be as communicative as she was in that sequence. which is why i think it works so well for the apology too. In the end when she asks her to pick her up Chisato looks a bit disturbed as if she has never actually done this before and it was all just wish fulfilment. I think that comes up a lot throughout the movie, and i guess all of them at this point. I think it is part of the reason why I so believe the whole Mahiro is autistic thing because its all about her inability to communicate the same way everyone else does and a big part of my finds that very relatable. so like 19 viewings in i find that bit quite meaningful. those are just my thoughts on that bit anyway haha, I liked your insight. back to the video

      Yeah, I think you're totally right here and that's more or less what I said in the video (or tried to say): It's the story of her accepting her life the way it is and not compare herself to others. She wants to change, because she feels like there is a need to do so, but ends up at a point where she understands, that she's totally fine the way she is.

      @@CompendiumofDiscomfort It was just a moment that really caught me in the video because everyone i know has been confused when we watched it together during that scene. I think we came to the same conclusion in different ways which is mostly why i commented haha

      @@BradTalksFilm It's a confusing scene. It feels very off, but if we all come to the same conclusion, it's probably not bad, just strange. So in the end Yugo wins.

    The Story reminds me a little of that one part in "Eternal Combat" when they also travel through time and land on a set of a hongkong Action movie and the hero fights on the set.
