4 reasons some people don’t like Taylor guitars

In this video I explain the four main reasons people don't like Taylor guitars. Many people say Taylor guitars are too bright, over engineer their guitars, the Expression system 2 (ES2) sounds terrible and they are too expensive. This video is not endorsed by @taylorguitars and is opinion based on research I have done on the interwebs. My conclusion is that Taylor use high quality materials and...

This is a review of the Behringer SL75c and the Behringer Ultravoice XM8500. The best cheap mics you can buy. It demonstrates the quality of the microphones on cheap versus expensive audio interface. Chuck'em, scream into'em, use them as a hammer, but whatever you don't try to eq them to sound like an SM57 or SM58! You're better than that!

Donner Starrypad | Best MIDI Drum Pads? | MIDI Controller | Review
I had a Taylor once, It sounded awful plugged in. The only way I could describe it was scratchy. I took it back to the shop and got a Martin.
Martin’s are great guitars!
i have martins taylors and gibsons , out of all these guitars the ones i've had problems with is the martins , martin craftsmanship over the last 10 to 15 years has really gone down hill , for example binding problems on a 2015 d 41 the binding come off twice that's a 5000.00 guitar , martin d 15m left the factory with frets so sharp you could grade cheese with them , a friend plays bluegrass got a 3000.00 martin a few weeks later the pickup fell apart inside the guitar during a show, Got a new d28 got it home had two hairline cracks below the bridge had to return it , once again left the factory that way, The only thing cheap about martins is their craftsmanship !
Interesting! Goes to show that good manufacturing processes matter in a time where demand is high and so are labour and material costs. Can’t cut corners when mass producing especially when you have a reputation risk like Martin.
Of the major brands in the US, Taylor is the one guitar company that sent all of the others back to the drawing board. They completely re-engineered neck attachment to the body. They completely re-engineered the neck profile. They almost single-handedly created a new way to apply coatings to the wood. They introduced CNC machining of the guitar necks, so that every neck is uniform. The amount of original research and engineering they have done is stunning. Beyond this, behind the scenes, what people don’t know, is that Taylor has worked with many newer guitar companies to help them get their production lines up and running. A good case in point is Breedlove guitars. Taylor actually welcomes healthy competition. Plus, you will not find them, as a company, ever denigrating any of their competitors.
Well put!!
I can't put my finger on it, but Taylor's just aren't for me. They play nice enough. The jingle of them doesn't suit my ear when I play them, but I don't mind them when listening to others play them. They are expensive when compared to my Yairi guitars, though.
👍👍
I own a Martin D-41, Martin OM-28, and Taylor 814ce Builders Edition. They're all higher end guitars. I prefer the Martins. The Martins have a richer sound, a more balanced sound, more resonance, and longer sustain. The Taylor is nice, but I find it has a thin metallic sound on the high end like you'd find in a cheap guitar, more tinny than bright. Note separation is more pronounced in the Taylor when playing chords but it has less resonance and sustain. I've played a Martin D-18 that I think is somewhat comparable to the Taylor in that they both have a sharper sound. But the D-18 is about half the price of the Taylor 814ce Builders Edition. Many things can affect the sound of the guitar, including the strings. You can change strings to your taste, but you can't change the wood or bracing. Taylors are often praised for being a more "playable" guitar. My Taylor is very playable, but my OM-28 has a modified low oval high performance taper neck that is more playable for my size hands. I think the Taylor is better for fingerpicking because of the note separation. The Martins aren't as loud when fingerpicking. But the Martins fill a room with sound when strummed with a pick in a way the Taylor doesn't. Overall, my vote is for Martin.
👍👍
Comments were no help 😂
What were you hoping to clarify? Maybe I can help.
What’s the terminal command for the software from the Donner Website
xattr -cr [file path]
what is working for him is not working for me. What he is doing is not the same for me. I have been directed wrong and not seeing anything about drum sounds. The place where he got the program has changed and now I can't find anything pertaining to drum sounds. There seems to be no editor for the starrypad I have cause I found no downloads for that device, when I did a search for starrypad, it came up with NO REULTS
The link to the editor is in the described and pinned comment. You need to get your own sounds. Search free drum sounds and you’ll find plenty.
How would I get one of ours in your hands to try.
Great design and concept! Sounds good too. Would love to have a chat with you guys about your guitar making on my channel. Reach out here if you’re interested and we can arrange a chat.
This could be very cool! Where are you?
@@BlaisPianoGuitars I’m in Melbourne, Australia. Down under!! What about you?
Down under what? We have DUMBO = down under Brooklyn Bridge neighborhood, NY. LOL. And you didn't want to be there at night. Thanks for coming back. I'm in Western MA. USA. Town of Chesterfield. Are you a luthier??
You sound like a Taylor fan boy. Are they bad? No, are they great, not really.

you ould of got 75 used good sounding Yamahas
🤣🤣 so true. My favourite kick around dreadnought is my $400 LL16 I picked up secondhand last year. But the pickup suuuuuucks on it.
Hi I'm on computer and I'm trying to connect I'm not on mac but I'm on chrome and everytime I press it. It sayscopy file name can I get help with that
Hi, sorry I’m not sure I understand. You’re having trouble installing it on your WIN PC? If so, it should just download and then double click to install.
@@sonusaurelius6576ok so every time I press the actual link it says copy file name and I can't press anything else
The link to the software have been put in a different place on Donner's webssite but are the same and see this comment or the description. For the editor software please use the following link and search the device: au.donnermusic.com/pages/download
"Sorry, the file you have requested does not exist."
@@NotStanley-td5nn looks like they just implemented a new search function on their manuals download page: au.donnermusic.com/pages/download - just search your device here
The Donner website has changed throughout the year so it is no longer at the bottom it would be very helpful if you made a new video on how to get started with your new starrypad.
The links to the software are in the description - I’ve also pinned a new comment with the links.
No laminates in any of the 33 D45s I own, especialy not my six six pre war ones, nor are there ay laminates in the 63 D28s I own.
Martin makes great guitars.
I have been trying to install the STARRYPAD software for 10 days. Your command on terminal was the key! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I found no mention of needing to do this anywhere else. Not on Donner’s site, not on Apple’s support sites.
I’m so glad the video helped!! ☺️
Bro, can you help me? I've been stuck on this for weeks. Inbox me if you can lend a hand.
@ haha! Maybe you could help by telling how to inbox you. Not sure how to direct message people on UA-cam but happy to help. What’s the problem? Not opening?
Would the "torrified" spruce top on the 214CE, along with the laminated sides and back, make it very resistant to humidity and dryness?
The laminate body would because it’s ostensibly reinforced with a resin. And yes, Torrefied wood is more stable and resists moisture uptake. I’d get a humidifier and humidity monitor for your studio/room. Hope that helps!
Vastly overpriced - especially for a guitar built on the cheap.....Pick up is poor. Mahogany version without a pick up is the better deal
👍🏼👍🏼
Ha HA, now and then people talking bad about Taylor,,,,I own a Martin OM 42 and a Taylor 912c from 1994.....This Taylorbox is my holy grail, compare to Taylor, the Martin has a very sweet tone but the Taylor has such a great radiance, complaxity, hovering, very loud and a huge sustain , that the Martin sounds against the 912c a bit boring. Taylors with engelman spruce...thats it!
Yeah I often prefer the sparkle of my Taylors and agree Engelmann spruce on anything is wonderful!!
Cut-away bodies. I will never play a guitar with a cutaway. What is this, the 90s?
😂😂
It took a while to remember that the bass control goes to full every time I took the guitar out of the case. Learning what the controls actually do is very useful. Many thanks.
Pleasure thanks for watching!
I guess because this video was made a year ago Donner has changed their downloads for the Donner Starrypad. It's no longer listed there and I still cannot find a DAW for the Starrypad. Hopes dashed, Donner doesn't even reply to their customer support emails.
It’s there, somewhere!! And yeah, Donner aren’t very customer focused.
when I use Terminal, I did everything you did but it says "permissions denied" how do I get around this?
Try entering it again exactly like this; you might have missed a space: “xattr -cr “[drag and drop application] Make sure there is a space between the command the application path.
I don't mind Taylor...they just sound to much like Martin guitars for me to really even own one...as they seem to be expensive for what they are...
Yeah they are expensive!!
Made to play : Epiphone Masterbuilt
Beautiful guitars!
I'M WATCHING A LOT OF VIDEOS TO DECIDE WHICH IS BETTER BETWEEN THE MARTIN JR 10 AND THE TAYLOR GS Mini WHICH AMONG OTHER THINGS THERE ARE SEVERAL VERSIONS AND IT'S REALLY A PUZZLE IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE POSSIBILITY TO TRY THEM ALL!! HOW COME IT SEEMS LIKE THIS LITTLE TAYLOR IS MORE PRIZED AND NOT THE MARTIN JR?? I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE AN ANSWER...(!!) THANKS...
Good question! I think it’s probably a combination of marketing and that Taylor’s GS mini was fairly novel when it came out. Parlour guitars and small travel guitars typically sounded boxy and, well, small. The GS mini changed that and offered a larger sounding guitar in a smaller package. Hope that helps.
Mine is a 214ce from 2015 and I don't like the sound. I can't say for sure, but the sound seems disembodied, weightless. It doesn't sound natural like the ES-2 system. I need to play really hard. It has an annoying piezo glow. And the piezo seems to have a problem because the D and G strings have a lower volume than the others. Can anyone help me with any tips?
A setup can help. Use the tips in the video. If that doesn’t work for you maybe the ES2 isn’t your sound, and that’s ok. You could change it out for something else like an LR Baggs.
@sonusaurelius6576 Thanks for replying. I have a friend who has a 214CE and as I really liked the sound I bought one too. But I bought it used. I didn't know these differences between pickups. Only after buying did I learn that the older ones use ES-T pickups. The sound of the ES-T and the ES-2 are very different. The ES-2 seems to sound more natural. I'll try to use your tips to equalize better. Thank you very much!
I like how Taylor Guitars play, but not so much how they sound.
👍🏼👍🏼
I don’t care what they said. If you glue one piece of wood onto another, it laminated. Some cheaper guitars have laminated sides and backs to save wood. They use the scraps too thin and glue them together to make a cheaper guitar. Taylor likes to call theirs LAYERED. It’s still laminated.
Agreed!! 👍🏼
I haven’t played one Taylor guitar that I liked.
👍🏼👍🏼
Martin has a sustainable rare wood program. The machining under the top is guided by a logic computer that compares the grain to thousands of successful hand shaped approaches , and is then finished by hand after the first machine shape. Some companies have neither of these construction approaches.
That’s useful thanks for sharing!! ♥️
I've gigged a 710 for almost 20 years. I've never felt the need for a different acoustic guitar
♥️♥️
Excellent review mate! Think I’m heading for the rosewood plus. It was the first GS mini I picked up, and loved the sound, playability & portability. That was in the UK, but I’m back in NZ and they’re stupidly expensive here, but I have options in UK & US. Curious how much they cost in Aus?
Oh yeah! They’re pricey. I got this $1600AUD around the time I made the video. I tried finding one secondhand, but I always seemed to miss out. People snap them up, but they still want a bit ~1200-1500 depending on condition. Guitars are getting expensive…
I have 5 Taylor's and 1 Martin ( a D18 de luxe) . The Martin neck, believe it or not is thinner than any of the Taylor necks, which sre all NT necks on x braced 2015 Taylor models. The Taylors have better, louder stronger sound projection and since Andy Powers joined Taylor I think they are a big improvement to the thinner high end sound of Bob Taylors guitars. I think it's all to do with ghe bracing design.
You’re right!
The materials used in laminate guitars today all resonate more efficiently than solid natural wood. That said, it may not result in the best tone. After all, how many players prefer resonators? They have the same sound, hence the word. Solid natural wood has a softer tone, though they may be louder and sustain more. That is the result of masterfully engineered bracing that is not often seen in a laminate guitar. Guitar makers who make the best sounding all wood guitars have a bracing system that is better than the others. Martin, Taylor, etc. Even Alvarez makes beautifully sounding guitars of wood or laminate because they have a very good bracing system Its the same with bone nuts vs resin. Today's resin resonates better than bone, but that results in a brighter tone. Bone, like wood, produces a more sophisticated sound most players prefer. Again, the natural frequency range of the wood does this, whereas the resonators all have a tighter frequency range which results in the resonator sound. We should start saying resonators for laminate guitars just like we do for metal body acoustics. Same resulting sound with different material. All that said, laminate guitars can be made with any range of frequency the builder wants. They just need to test their material.
👍🏼👍🏼 yeah bracing is important. I have a Yamaha LL16 all solid body with unscalloped bracing and I think it doesn’t live up to its potential. Still good though!
People are so pathetic, that if your dog could walk on water, someone prick will pipe up with, "Yeah and!? So what, you have a dog that can't swim". Caveat: i'm going to buy a Furch
Love Furch!! Good choice. 👍🏼
i think preferance is completely personal. basses are significantly reduced when changing to lights. however, it is not awful actually i felt now it is more balanced with the mids and highs.
👍🏼👍🏼 yeah I think it’s more balanced too
I changed a cheap Martin for an expensive Taylor and am having problems adapting to the new sound. When playing unplugged the sound is not as loud, and que using the amplifier (the same Fishman amplifier), I get a lot of noises coming from my fingers touching the strings, something I did not get from the cheap Martin I had. I’m trying to figure out what’s causing this, probably poor grounding of the amplifier. I’m not a hater, and I’m not saying the change I made was a mistake; I think I just need to figure out how use the amplifier’s equalizer and controls to better fit the new guitar.
It’s the ES2. You’ll get used to it but it does up more finger noise. When EQing the ES2 just remember that louder isn’t better, i keep the volume knob low on mine guitars. You can also adjust sensitivity if the three pinned bridge pickups with a t5 (or 3 can’t remember ) screwdriver.
One important element for a guitar to sound good is knowing how to play it. I have Taylor guitars and love them.
😂 that’s a good starting point
Laminate also means stable, solid is subject to warping.
You’re right when it comes to floorboards yet with guitars it’s a different kind of sensibility.
I would say that if you need pure acoustic warm tone and like to play in small group, Martin is best. But if you want to play in a big band environment, Taylor wins the race because its easily cuts through the mix. I use taylor and Yamaha both. If i play in small group or single i use yamaha. If i play in band then taylor
Yeah pick the guitars for the context!
I always love my 214ce no matter what
♥️♥️
I love my Taylor 110CE. I agree it is bright. Sounds great with open tunings and alternate tunings such as DADGAD. And I don't like it for heartier songs which need more depth and tone...love a Martin there. I'll never get rid of my Taylor, but I wont stop with it.
👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent video, both in matter of analysis of the equipment and advice given. And the song is beautiful. Is there a published version?
Thanks mate!! Glad it was useful. This song isn’t published, sorry to say!
On my mahogany version, the 13s are absolutely perfect because they let that mellow tone fall right into place. Anything lighter would be counterintuitive. I just wish Taylor would give us more string spacing and a slightly fatter neck to allow us who have larger paws to play with complete comfort.
Yeah I’ve also got large hands and it makes it hard to play some guitar parts, but prefer lighter gauge. Thanks for commenting.
I returned a taylor 314ce 50th anniversary for a Martin 00016 streetmaster. The taylor had no sparkle compared to my teacher's Taylor. If you want a great taylor, spend 4k.
Glad you found a guitar suits your budget and tonal preference! Thanks for commenting
@sonusaurelius6576 well... I might return the Martin Streetmaster for the 000-28. I'm tone chasing and looking for something that speaks to me. The streetmaster is loose feeling, with amazing tone. The 000-28 has a bit more controlled sound while still being very much what I want. That all being said, the 000-28 has a familiar sound. And familiar can be both a blessing and a curse
this video isn't offering enough help i'm doing everything mentioned but the send to device button will still not show up
Try unplugging and plugging back in. Sometimes the device just doesn’t register on the computer. If that doesn’t work, make sure you go to options and devices and select the starrypad and in and out device.
I run Elixir lights. I play 200+ gigs a year with it. My work horse
