For one, they get paid a lot. Those seats are really pricey. Those clubs are also known to be a "home away from home" for Broadway professionals and audiences alike. It is not uncommon to see other industry bigwigs in the audience including legendary directors and composers. You don't get booked in those clubs unless you have a good track record in the nyc performance art scene.
