Honestly I would have pre treated the carpet with a light degreaser and scrubed it in with a brush that had a super long handle, then extracted and steam cleaned & then once everything is clean done a final steam to disinfect, particularly with distilled white vinegar.

Don’t walk on carpet with shoes. Don’t allow food in the living room. Clean up stains right away. Vacuum all the time. If you can’t do those simple things, then just get tile or something. There’s no excuse that carpet should ever get that dirty if it’s inside of a home. smh

You got it done which is so much more than happens with the carpet cleaners here in South Australia; they sell you a certain amount of time not a result!
