Kraljic Portfolio Analysis Matrix Demystified

Peter Kraljic's Portfolio Analysis is widely referred to, but not always understood. Here I try to give a narrative on what it is, and how it may be used in procurement. The other two videos explore the matrix in more detail. The IP in the original model belongs to Peter Kraljic

To see a fathers or mothers success is to see what his children become. Your father did his part ….you just finally realized it. Because you never let negativity rule.

As someone who relies on the transcripts this required video in a class I am taking is by far the least helpful I have ever encountered. Music playing when I am assuming important information is being presented is not only distracting but the information is not included in the transcripts. The speaker's pace is too fast and I have no idea what the lecture was even supposed to get across. Epic FAIL in my opinion.

@Paul Rogers. It would be very interesting if you were to make a video on criticism of Kraljic's portfolio matrix. e.g. whereas non-critical suppliers, even if the relationship is weak, and actually should be so, contribution to the development of some particular capabilities (such as financial and organizational strength) may be recommended in order to ensure the viability of the supplier.

Espen, thank you for your comment. I was tired of people cannibalizing Kraljic's ideas and misrepresenting them, so this was an homage to Kraljic rather than a critique. If we are a small account to the provider, and there are other providers in the same market, why would we invest in their survival? That is the point of the model, that the business focus should be on 'bottleneck' and 'strategic' categories. You might respond: "All very well, Paul, but what about the focus of many larger corporates and public sector entities upon buying from SMEs or on supporting local suppliers, or minority-owned and operated suppliers"? A tough one, Espen! If we have a small spend with a non-critical supplier, but their insolvency would cause us reputational harm or impact upon our operations, we may behave as if they were a Bottleneck category supplier. There are numerous examples from the oil and gas industry, or indeed many primary industries with which you may be familiar in your native country! The company operates in a remote location and there are only a few industries in the town. A supplier of non-critical categories is marginal in profitability, and IF they exit the industry, there will be less capacity and less competition and the market MAY become oligopolistic or even monopolistic. In that case, the client may act to support the viability of the supplier (a) to maintain competition and (b) to maintain the viability of the local community on the basis of the 'domino effect' Kraljic wrote his ideas at a time of 'consumer sovereignty and free-market economics. We are now in a time of paternalism and benevolent capitalism, are we not? So a fair criticism (that I think you are making) is that it is wrong to suggest that a buyer has no remit for the viability of suppliers supplying non-critical categories. They may loan staff, or offer advice about governance, or give access to preferential payment terms, but all of these things are motivated by either (a) a desire to avoid doing 'bad' things and/or (b) a desire to do 'good' things. Let me know your feedback on my (presumptive) interpretation of your comment. In the meantime, thank you for your comment and I wish you well! Paul
