I love tabletop gaming and 40k but hate how prohibitively expensive it is. After years designing my own models, I decided to start making tutorials, both to showcase my own ideas and give others the skills they need to bring their desired models to life!
Half Sword - Hot & High-Speed Hatchet Duels
The Hatchet is a low-tier weapon with poor range and mediocre damage. Now, watch as I take some poor fools apart with it :)

Ever been annoyed that the DarkMech don't have any real models from Games Workshop? Have no fear, I'm here to help with my plugin mic, modded version of Blender, and the will to do what James Workshop won't (or more likely can't due to this IP's already cramped roster of factions). Kitbashing a PRAETORIAN GUARD IMPERIAL GUARDSMAN

Today we will be diving into the wet, wacky and very, very British world of the Praetorian Guard, a discontinued Astra Militarum regiment from the late 90's. Follow along as I attempt to create a thematically faithful recreation of the Imperial Guard's single most fashionable regiment. What techniques have you found work with the Billhook? Let me know!
great tutorial! I am having an issue, however, where some of the particles seem to have rotations different to the rest, despite having random order deselected. I am wondering if there is a fix to the issue?
That's weird. I had a similar issue once, and it was because I'd forgotten to activate Object Rotation. Select your Guide Plane, and go to Emission - Object - Instance Object and ensure that the "Object Rotation" box is checked, and the "Global Coordinates" box is unchecked. If they're not, some of the particles will be rotated differently. Also, if you have a Source Object that is irregular, sometimes it will appear to be randomly rotated even though it isn't. What sort of an object are you using for your particles? Let me know if this works?
@@ThimbleMakes Thanks for the reply! I've followed the steps to a T, and unfortunately I am having the same issue. I suppose that the irregular object may be a factor in this issue, even though my vertices and faces are fairly uniform. I've gone through with following steps in other comments to make the particle instances real, and then manually rotating the offending particles.
@@le_unclebear Good to hear it worked out. That's still really strange..anyone else having this issue please let me know.
This is a fantastic tutorial and incredible information - EXTREMELY VALUABLE! :0
I found that using a sword with only one hand works well against NPCs, might not have the strongest strikes but I think it gives more range
poleax is so op try that its hard to learn the mechs of it tho
one thing you might have fun exploring on is lethality without strike if you prepare with a defence guard, the neutral in the middle, you can "swing" your sword by switching to a thrust stance either left or right. this can both deflect a blow and thrust into the neck or head area if done correctly
Get a bill hook or that square spear thing, two hand it, and drop it while you swing to the right, if you do it correctly you will spin it and throw it in front of your character. Also this trick takes too much practice not worth it
If this game has a pvp your precision is no match for my mindless mace swinging
With a longsword, I like to point It all the way forward, and then move my mouse sideways to wiggle the tip. When I grow close, It makes the ai freak out, and start blocking in all directions, which opens it up for a follow up with whatever feels best at the moment xD
SSWWWWIIIIINEE
Great use of half swording against that guisarme
Thank you. I'm glad this game let's you use Half Sword grip, even when you don't have any gauntlets on to protect yourself from the blade edge. Definitely would not want to try that irl 😅
@@ThimbleMakes It actually wasn't that uncommon or crazy to half-sword without hand protection. Lots of historical sword fighting manuals depicted users half-swording without gloves. Even in practice it's a solid option provided you have good technique. Think about it, a poorly armored man at arms with a sword vs a heavily armored knight with any weapon is sure to end quickly without half-swording. Skilled half-sword technique would have saved your life, so what if you lose a finger or two. Look up Skallagrim's video on half-swording. It brings to light some of the misconceptions while proving the validity of the technique. Sorry, I'm a huge HEMA nerd haha!
Bro has mastered the wiggle
thanks for the tutorial!

Is it not possible to convert the particles to a mesh after all these steps are done? Either way great video I will try this. Edit: Yeah you can. It is pretty easy. Just go to modifiers an locate the particle modifier for the plane. Then you press convert and voila, you got yourself a bunch of little chain link objects and can export as STL if you so desire. OHHH and while writing this I just saw the other comment explaining this exact same thing.

Will any of these models you make be available for download later?
I would love to do that, however most of these models are made from parts out of paid kits which are made by independent model designers. I understand the time and effort it takes to create these models from scratch, and can't in good conscience undercut them by giving away the things they work so hard to build. If you'd like to recreate these, the parts list is in the video description for all of my videos, and some of the kits (specifically the Armored Sentinel) are free on Cults. I'll always advocate for pirating official GW stuff, but not that which comes from independent creators.
@@ThimbleMakes can I DM you some files/suggestions for a future video?
@@akumaking1 You're welcome to, I'm very busy atm so I can't make any guarantees they'll ever end up being a future video, but I'll take a look for sure 😄
@@ThimbleMakes Is there a way to DM you via stuff like Discord or email?
@@akumaking1 You can add me on Discord, Thimble #4481
Thanks a lot for this tutorial, there is anyway you can do another on how to give texture to cloths like cloak and so on ? Like this when we dry brush it all the little details come out ?
I will add that to my list of video ideas. I'm very busy at the moment but that would be a great candidate for another fast tutorial!
@@ThimbleMakes Thank you so much
thank you so much this is exacly what I was looking for
If you go to the modifier tab (Blender 4.1) and press the greater than symbol on the left of the "particleSystem" modifier after you have fixed all of your particle system as you want... you can then highlight the plane that you are making the particle system "on", and hit "make instances real". When you do so, all of the particles will become separate meshes which you can join together, and then export as an stl file, rather than an obj file... if you want. Some people may prefer stl exported files, some not... but it is an option.
Great Advice, I will pin this for people to see!
So what do you plan to use this technique for? Let me know!
I want to be able to adapt this to create Necron capes/whatever those tassels are.
@@akumaking1 Those chains of Geometric shapes that look kind of like dreadlocks? You could do that pretty easily, you'll just need to model a Source Object that looks like one piece of them, then reduce your guide plane down to one vertex wide and extrude it at consistent distances to make a guiding line, ensuring that the vertexes are rotated to match up the top angles on the cape pieces. This might make a good tutorial idea, I'll file it away for future videos.
@@ThimbleMakes I have some STL files that you could use as a reference if you're interested. How would I email them to you?
@@akumaking1 Put the files you'd like to show me into a google drive and email link access to thimblemakes@gmail.com
A good straightforward tutorial, thanks man
So I did a dark mech model where I started with one of the fantasy wraiths(the one that came with a metal mask and two different skull heads I used the body of that along with the mask head and part of the torso of a Kataphron battle servitor with some greenstuff behind it and stuck some various sizes of guitar wire in hanging down put a pair of tiny servo arms hanging down from the bottom and replace his right hand with a skitari robot hand with one of nerf maverick looking pistols and his left arm with a cable that's supposed to connect a backpack to a gun. It came out less body horror and more cyberghost but was fairly fun, I've seen a few people use the same general idea and I don't think I've ever seen a bad combination with those parts.
looks great!
Awesome! Maybe do a character next!
Damn skibidi toilet became very grimdark very fast 😅
i think making a dark ad mech version of Cawl, or other characters, would be a fun idea.
awesome thank you for making some DarkMech models
awesome job you should tackle the Maccabian Janissaries next

Thats not a conversion tho... plus the racism. Why?
these look awesome man. great work on them!
the scale of the human head is a bit off, great vid
I used to put ork arms on my marines for the same effect
Should have left the base plain and put actual material on it by hand after painting.
7:23 The admech have too few actual named characters with backstories, merely generic units and GW shows no signs of fixing that themselves, leaving it up to the fans.

The kitbash is great and easily replicatable, the idea inspired, and the result awesome. But...well. Most Space Marines kinda DO come from Death Worlds. Or at least, they recruit actively from one. Death Worlds produce the best soldiers and Marine aspirants, thats just a given. Its the reason places like Blackwater and Caldaris exist still.
Tiger's have the eye cammo thing on the backs of their ears.

Really cool

randomly found you and had to check the content out. I like to find unit well known channels sometimes.
You should really experiment with some of the other sculpting tools. Crease and pinch would have helped you out a lot with some of the things I was watching you do.
I like these a ton dude. The somewhat goofy aesthetic of over confident marines who dont use armor, wacky patterns, and of course, the beaky. Looks like modern spins on older metals
Sting as I too thought Stalkers was a suitable nominclature. Perhaps, Death Stalkers to bring in the nature of their world.
That has just the right mix of 'Predator' meets 'Elton John' :) Keep them coming, this is such a fun idea!
