I remember when this came out in the spring of 1973. Now, listening to it again, I wonder if it was meant to be satirical. In other words, Hammond is poking fun at whoever the narrator of the song is supposed to be. I noted that Hammond is British, while the song is about an American. I took it all at face value when I was 18 back then.

A truly beautiful yet sad song sung by a handsome gifted musical legend ! Last week I accidentally came across it on Spotify when I was driving alone late at night. My oh mine, every word of the lyrics hit me heavily, hard to explain but it was so crystal clear. I became very sentimental particularly when I heard him singing: “L.A. is fine but it ain’t my home, New York is home but it ain’t mine no more…” I just couldn’t hold back the tears. This was exactly what I went through decades ago, raised and educated on the West Coast but moved to the East Coast because of a lucrative job offer! I enlightened my view and perspective in the Big Apple, wearing and using brand name items, driving foreign 2 seater convertible … but still I missed L.A. a great deal. I met many acquaintances in New York but my friends were all in L.A., I would never missed a chance flying back just to breathe the air, visiting friends, eating tacos, wining and dining, even just for 2-3 days. I was indeed lost between two shores. The mixed feelings lingered for several years. Neil, thank u so much for making this spectacular song, exceptionally touching 🥲
