Whereas X was more on the speaking upon individual mental trials/tribulations as a Black man tip. Pac mostly spoke upon what was done/being done TO him. DMX mostly spoke upon what it MADE him into. Both valued....both gifted....both effective...both worthy of respect. BUT CUT ALL OF THE MUSIC AND JUST PUT A MIC ONSTAGE WITH NO TRACKS. GUARANTEED THAT DMX WOULD'VE ATE PAC'S ARSE UP! Unless the crowd is composed of a bunch of young (wanna be 'Gangsta') type get with's. Half of Pac's fans felt what he was rapping about. Because they EXPERIENCED what some of his songs were about. From incarceration to dealing with shady women. To being a Black woman in this world. But the other half were just millions upon millions of younger folks (oftentimes White)....with no real sense of their OWN identity. They wanted to be 'down' and seem hip. And this is coming from a dude who views Pac as a true MASTER LYRICIST!!!! Even with Pac's supreme gift of painting a picture and makin' u feel it. DMX SURPASSED THAT WITH THE PAIN IN HIS VOICE ON TOP OF THE LYRICS! Both are kings in the rap game to me. But I grew up in an era where YOU COULDN'T HIDE BEHIND THE MUSIC WHEN U WERE RAPPING. U HAD TO SHUT THAT *ISH* OFF AND GO OUTSIDE TO RAP BATTLE BASED STRICTLY ON LYRICS AND FLOW. Not to say that Pac 'hid' behind his music. BUT LET'S CUT THE *ISH* ....without the catchy tracks/beats half of Pac's songs wouldn't have been such bangers. DMX WAS *****STILL**** that raw/str8 off the corner hungry ninja in his songs EVEN AFTER BECOMING FAMOUS! And u could hear it until the day that he died. Whereas Pac was mainly complaining about being wronged. Pac's songs were mainly about the EXTERNAL journey that a young Black man was going thru (him). Whereas DMX's songs were *almost* entirely about the internal struggles between the darkness and light within. Both are of equal value. The hype surrounding Pac was justified. Because the brotha was a genius with that pen/paper. And a master n tha studio. But DMX was more on some GROWN ARSED MAN *ish*. This is why Pac had so many youngsters on the bandwagon. JUST LIKE WHEN LIL' WAYNE CAME OUT....HALF OF THE FOLKS BUYING STREAMS ONLINE OR CD's of 'LIL WAYNE WERE JUST HOPPING ON THE BANDWAGON. They were only doing what youngsters do......TRY TO FIT IN!!!!!!!!! DMX WAS AN OLDER DUDE WHO DIDN'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE BUSINESS SIDE AS MUCH AS PAC (which isn't a bad thing). Pac often sounded like he was glorifying killing. Almost sounding as if it's something to be proud of. Whereas X sounded more like a testimonial of how far he'd come from having that killer mentality. Though both were talented....Pac used the desire for 'bad boys'/negative black male stereotypes to help his stock. DMX simply opened the book on his life and laid it all out there for us to choose. Which is why he'd often pray openly and ask for forgiveness. Because for him it wasn't a GAME! I don't put Pac down for this though. We must remember that he died young. He was still discovering who he was as a man in this world. This is why at times he seemed immature. And at other times he seemed beyond his years. There just aren't too many fully mature 24 or 25 year old SUPERSTARS out there. The sad truth is that his talent aside....HALF OF PAC'S FANS ARE INTO THE IMAGE OF WHAT THEY BELIEVE 2PAC TO BE. Whereas with X....what u saw...was truly what he was to his core. Whereas X had a more specific following. Example: When X released 'Up In Here' we got an idea of just how MUCH MORE famous X could've been. If he so chose to. But he remained true to what HE felt on his projects. DMX wasn't about tha 'club' songs. But he released a few because it's the game that u played back then if u wanted more crossover/exposure. I'm not saynig that DMX was 'better' than Pac. Because they ruled 2 different types of Rap Kingdoms. But let's just say that PEOPLE DIDN'T FEAR 2PAC...THEY FEARED HIS GOONS/TEAM! Whereas DMX WAS RESPECTED DUE TO HIS TURBULANT MENTALS. In other words....FOLKS KNEW THAT X WAS 'OFF'/UNSTABLE....LOL! Due to drugs? Yes. But the result is the same....lol. The dude was an unpredictable timebomb when he hit the scene in his prime. Yes, Pac shot an undercover cop that was beating on a Black Man. And that's both NOBLE & 'gangsta'. But that didn't make HIM 'Gangsta'. Due to his money/status he was able to have actual Gangsters around him. And on his team. It is my belief that WITHOUT THE GOONS/GANGSTERS on his team....Pac would've NEVER laid down the type of tracks that he laid down for himself after getting out and signed to Deathrow. He may have been hired on as a ghostwriter for the other Rappers on Deathrow. Or he may have even released a few albums himself. Due to his talent. But his willingness to glorify being destructive as a Black man is what put him over the top in the industry. Which he did from the pain of feeling betrayed and shot. HE WANTED VENGEANCE! And used the consumers as his ammo! Whereas DMX had no such agenda. He simply wanted to bare his soul. He died seeking healing. The money from the rap game was just the icing on the cake for X. Whereas for Pac...it was moreso about the money FIRST. Which is why he said in his rap song 'Holla At Me' "We addicted to the currency...that's why we do this." Which is why when Pac's own mother said "Why are u doing this East/West Coast thing". "Please stop it". Pac responded with "I'm just tryna sell records Momma." But don't take my word for it. Pull up the interview with his mother. Whereas DMX was ALWAYS ON SOME GANGSTER/WAR TYPE *ISH* when necessary w/out a team of goons to protect him. BIG DIFFERENCE. This doesn't mean that Pac was 'soft'. Or a punk. But there's a difference in the streets between someone SURROUNDED by goons/gangsters in order to be a gangster. Versus that ninja who is already so gangster that he get's that respect/fear even WITHOUT his goons with him. 2Pac was not a gangsta. He was militant. There is a difference. Pac was a militant Black Man who exhibited 'Gangsta' tendencies. Moreso after he became famous. DMX WAS A GANGSTA WHO NEVER CHOSE TO LEAD STREET ARMIES. Partly due to the fact that his own individual demons kept him distracted. But the one thing that I MUST respect Pac for is this...Pac himself stated that he was no 'tough guy'. He stated that he was just a regular dude in extraordinary circumstances. "Tryna find my way". I MUST respect this. You can be militant and do 'gangsta' type *ish*. Napolean said Makaveli records was going to be under death row records. Edi and Young Noble said it was going to be under Quest records. I think Pac wanted Makaveli to be his last Death Row album to be released in 97. I think the first problem was Pac looked at All eyez on me to be 2/3 of the albums owed to death row. Makaveli was suppose to be his 3rd and final album. Suge wanted the Makaveli album to be a mixtape which was BS. Pac caught on to this. Suge wanted Pac final album to be the Thug Pound album to be released in 98 with Snoop, Dogg Pound, LBC, and the Outlawz, instead of the 1 nation album. Pac recorded all those songs with Death Row and Suge wasnt going to let Pac take them to Quest records. This is why Pac tried to take his masters. Pac wasn't a yes man like people think. Suge lost Dre, he didnt wont to lose Pac or Snoop.
