40 year old man writes a song
Переглядів 5621 день тому
Now I'm a middle aged man, I feel the problems us 40 year old feel. A key one for me is relaxing, I find it hard to switch off because there's always something that has to be done, something needing my time and it leaves little, if any opportunity for me to relax and feel inspired by the things that I love...like songwriting. In this video I am writing a song about a moment of pure relaxation a...

How to write your FIRST song
Переглядів 406Місяць тому
There is no right way to write a song, there is no formula to follow and every song comes with it's own story of how it was written. This is why it's so daunting to get started writing your first song feels impossible. But the only way to learn to write songs is to actually write songs. After teaching guitar for over 18 years I have a method to help you write your first song, that works, and it...

I remember writing my first songs and asking every songwriter I knew a million questions. No answer was good enough, now I am older and a lot more experienced I know that there is no right or wrong answer but trial and error. If you have a question why not try it and see. One of thre first questions I asked was 'lyrics first, music first?' I still don't write lyrics first so I'm ging try try an...

Make progressions INSTANTLY interesting (secondary dominants)
Переглядів 1194 місяці тому
Satying in key is great because everything works. But, staying in key can sound predictable. The solution is to use chords not in the key. But, how do you do that? Secondary Dominant chords are a great introduction to venturning outside the chords in a key. And, the best part is...secondary dominants sound AWESOME. I just picked up an old song snippet and finally started working on it after DECADES! Thank you so much for your kind encouragement and simple suggestions~
@@lindaschwartz5011 that’s awesome! I know the feeling the longer it takes the harder it can feel to finish. Glad it’s been somewhat helpful 👍🏼🎸
I have taken many songwriting classes but have been on a long hiatus. Thanks for some excellent, concise tips!

Possibly my favourite song.
@@1000000man1 yeah it’s got to be up there for me too 👍🏼🎸
I always assumed the downer feel was because this perfect day was in the past. Maybe the present is depressing and he's remembering a better time.
@@1000000man1 ahhh yeah it could be. Such a great song 👍🏼🎸
Great video as always mate - writing songs for me is like therapy, like how I can get what my subconscious brain is thinking. Maybe:)
Cheers pal. Completely agree mate, it's almost like the only thing that is completely mine
This is so relatable. Pushing yourself to record/write something on a bad day can lead either to more bitter-sweet feelings or make the day more bareble. I think it's a great way to tunnel certain feelings into something musical and productive that we can look back at with joy. Great video!
Very true. It’s very easy to give up but sometimes it can yield results. Thanks pal 👍🏼🎸
Hey up, another really inspirational video Dave. Had similar feelings since Boxing Day, I always fall back on doing something with my guitar and logic, but never seem to finish anything. I started a song again today, instrumental, been trying to put it together for the last month, but the usual happens ...end up watching some UA-cam, maybe learn Wind Cries Mary all the way through, but spend most of the time trying to get a Hendrix tone on Scuffhams S-Gear and the days gone again....haha but tomorrow.. Really liking the track Seeing Red...I hope you dont mind me giving an opinion....It needs space, less chorus, lovely chord progression ...the verse's are really really good, you have to go straight back into the verse after the first "Dont want to let you down", love the "Im seeing red", there's a f-ing great track here, wish I could sing..... Id keep the chorus to a min, minimalise (is that a word?), maybe wipe it out, everything except the verses, too many words and explanations in the chorus, and for the love of god...hahahaha .....why haven't you used "time"..... watch you video back, time stuck out to me, ......but hey what do I know Ive never written a worded song in my life. Just my opinion sitting here procrastinating and enjoying some Port and listening to your very cool demo track
Thanks mate that’s really really appreciated. Totally agree with you, I’m really liking this format of showing the writing process and I think your suggestions here are spot on, if I was to make this into a full track I’d definitely work on the structure and flesh out all the ideas more. Thanks mate 👍🏼🎸

@DaveyH deffo mate I know the feeling - I get odd bits of time here and there but keep at it mate
Can you do a video on the music video Which feel different to the song (Gang violence and old friendships)
My big 2 problems are: 1. My voice is absolutely terrible. Practice seems to make it worse 🤷♂️ #2 Zero drive. I'm the best at making excuses. I can make a reason to not do anything. My favorite songs are the simplest ones. I've written about a million half songs but I don't think I've ever finished one. This video really gives me some good inspiration though. Thanks for that ✌️😎
@@matthew6427 interesting, I know what you mean, I’ve never liked my voice, probably why I do a million takes for every vocal. Yeah finishing is hard that’s why I like making videos, gives me deadlines, deadlines are amazing for getting songs finished. Thanks mate, I really really appreciate that 👍🏼🎸
Get yourself wavestune - tidy up any bum notes :)

Hi man idk if youre still doing this but if you are could you do how to play like the smiths? ❤
Great ideas.... work on your recording mix, as the guitar drowns out your voice when instructing.... I had to play over and over to get what you were saying. One idea is to type the chords into a visual on the video.
@@stevengodin4830 very fair critique pal. Thanks for watching 👍🏼🎸
If you made the vocal just more nasaly and snarled and like you were a lairy scally then it could almost be one of theirs You're singing like noel - stomping forward, bungling (no offence). Liam is like a lithe, agile, nasaly, swaggering, cocky, looking for a fight Zorro character. Accidentally articulate. Then some plodding alternating thumpa / shuffle drum for classic Oasis As someone else said, noel wrote (he claims) melody first and then fits chords to it. Kurt wrote the other way around - interesting power chords then added the words at the last moment. Noel's stuff does sound like he wrote chords first though even if he claimed otherwise Also yet more pontificating by me, Noel's lyrics aren't so much "about" things being good, they are about things "becoming" good, uplifting to something better, rather than already being better
@@maximisatwat really great points there mate. Thanks for taking the time and for such a well thought out comment. 👍🏼🎸
