The Most Consequential Atlus Game in 20 Years

With the release of Metaphor-ReFantazio this week, I decided that some preview content is in order because I do think that this is a big moment for Atlus. For those aware of my MegaTen Music series, I’m still working on that but its going to take a bit of a backseat as I sink my teeth into this new game. #atlus #persona #metaphorrefantazio

    My only issue with Sanctism, and with Atlus' representation of Monotheism (and religion in general) is that they are always strawmen. Their idea of faith is just blind conformism, with no semblance of good sides, especially Monotheism is depicted as mere conformity, ignoring the many times it is not. They want to make deep stories, but you can't make a deep story if you aren't willing to face complex issues. It is absolutely possible to criticise religion with nuance, for example by showing a good religious character and a bad one, showcasing the pros and cons of the concept. Atlus' approach is just philosophical cowardice

    “Racism is bad” White skin tone main character lol. I’d imagine there’d be a ton more hate, vitriol, double speak, and dog whistling if this theme came with a black main character. It is what it is though lol. Just a thought albeit a very realistic and honest one.

    It's the best writing in the series so far, however I haven't completed it. I'm sort of dreading the middle of the game because that's when I have felt most of these games fall apart. They are simply longer than they have time to write in order to keep all of the characters involved and there is room to grow. A lot of the exposition and metaphor within the fame is a bit silly at times, but I haven't seen how the game wishes to connect everything together, qnd I don't know what the twist is, yet, but you can feel it coming from just how pointed the writing is from the very beginning. It's interesting up to the end of the second big act so far. All of the characters are far better than the persona games so far.

    One thing I’ve noticed immediately is the dungeons being absolutely SATURATED with magla and are places that should be safe normally, a massive church and the castle of a well respected noble. It’s likely that these locations ARE normally safe but the anixity felt by the people are corrupting them, turning both into a den of monsters. It brilliantly shows how anixity can infect even the areas around us, making spaces that should feel safe into ones that slowly drive us to madness.

    The only thing i want to add to this absolutely phenomenal breakdown, and thats that, in the epilogue, *things arent instantly fixed* but everyone is hopeful for it. The problems are being worked on, the anxieties are being addressed, and possibly not even the most effectively. It feels so positive and relatable because while it is fantasy, it manages to give us that grounding that, yes, we can embody heroes and subside our anxities for a better world, but it will also take WORK, it will take the occasional FAILURE, but it can be sustained with hope, idealism, and support.

    I really enjoyed this video, you dived very in-depth into the anxiety motif in Metaphor, and this video made me think critically about the game more. However, I think I still strongly disagree that overcoming is the main thematic idea in Metaphor. My opinion is that anxiety is heavily used in this game to talk about the real main thematic idea, which is overcoming fascism. I would say the theme of Metaphor is that we as a society can overcome fascism only if we can believe it’s possible to overcome our anxiety and prejudice. This is shown so clearly by (in my opinion) the most important scenes in the game - the scenes where you read out of the fantasy book. When the protag reads out of the fantasy book, initially the party members mostly comment that it sounds unbelievable. By the end of the game, they all believe that their fantasy is possible and through that belief they are able to overcome Louis. The Anxiety motif is used in conjunction with prejudice to demonstrate how people fall into fascism (siding with Louis or arguably siding with Forden). Speaking of Louis, he is also the perfect example of the fascism theme, since he is a textbook fascist. He believes only a certain group of people (the strong) deserve to survive, and he goes to great lengths to make sure everyone else will die. The final boss and ending sequence are not just about overcoming anxiety, it’s about preventing a fascist takeover BY overcoming anxiety and prejudice. This is why the call to action to the player is so heavily emphasize through the connections to the real world - the game wants the player to analyze how their own anxiety’s and prejudice affect the world negatively, specifically in a political manner. Regardless of whether you agree with me or not, I’m somewhat surprised you didn’t really tie your analysis of anxiety in Metaphor into the political elements of this very politics-heavy game. However, barring that somewhat minor gripe, this video is the best Metaphor analysis video I have seen and I didn’t even consider half the points you have made. I would love to see a follow-up video about the more political aspects of Metaphor - I think you would do a great job with it.

      Thank you for pointing that out! I think I mentioned facism once in the entire video which probably deserved its own segment at the very least. I want to eventually do a more comprehensive video on the entirety of the game, and I should definitely include this aspect. Facism (and obedience in a more general sense) are themes I would definitely highlight more if I had a second attempt at this video

      And furthermore, that battle with Louis is specifically about anxieties people may have that lead to fascism. Namely, about how a person is not unique or not on top if they can’t prove themselves the best or the strongest, which are feelings that can lead to fascism.

    I love Atlus as much as the next guy but I honestly feel like P5 and onwards they put too much emphasis on a story they really don’t know how to make. From what I go was the theme that “Fantasy has power to real life” and that is a terrible way lesson. Art imitates life we shouldn’t be sitting there obsessing over fiction. If that part wasn’t in this game it would easily be my 3rd favorite Atlus game. I think this game’s message is similar to main line SMT where instead of picking a side you have to play neutral. Which is always considered the “right side” in this franchise. I feel the anxiety point is only brought up towards the end. I hope we can get genuine more original ideas in this series like how the devil summoner series did where it was more about the self than Persona ever will be. Ultimately that’s just my opinion and this was a great video.

      What’s so terrible about Fantasy having influence over real life? Without Fantasy, we wouldn’t have as many inventions in our world. Submarines, robots, and lasers all started as fictional creations, before someone was inspired to make them real. Besides that, the theme of Anxiety is seen throughout the whole game. The systemic racism is influenced by the people’s fear of each other. Humans appear more frequently, due to the public’s increased anxiety. The Archetypes tell you you’re forging anxiety into strength, every time you awaken them. It’s not something that’s tacked on at the end.

    • @The_Real_Raidou
      @The_Real_Raidou День тому

      @ I am talking about how now people fantasize fiction more than the real world. You have people obsessed over fictional women instead of genuinely improving their life and it’s sick people keep defending it. And if Atlus was talking about inventions it’s funny that they make games where you can date fictional minors. It’s clear they are discussing how messages in fiction can influence our choices which is what I mean as a bad idea. The theme is still tacked on at the end. The party members don’t have “anxiety” they have genuine fear or hatred of the people who wronged them. We don’t see the theme much until the end game when the MC turns into the monster. It’s not the main theme in this game. Because if it was that is what the ending cutscene would be talking about. And that doesn’t matter much when it turns out that you were made up so the prince can live a fantasy instead of actually traveling. I know this may feel portrayed that I’m angry but I’m not I’m just discussing stuff about this game I have problems with

    • @Kaisona2017

      @ The game does warn you about over indulging in fantasy. At the end, More wants to hide in his own fantasy world with his son, rather than face reality; but Will knows that’s not the right way to live, and defeats his father to go back to his world. It shows that, while believing in Fantasy to influence our world is good, using it as pure escapism is self destructive.

      It's also worth bringing up Louis's relationship to fantasy. He does not believe in reforming the current world gradually, and instead seeks an instant revolution that would have terrible results for everyone, and somehow things will come out better on the other end. It's reminiscent of irl ideologies and their idea of what it takes to change the world. A lot of it boils down to a "political rapture", a great big event that changes everything. Louis and his adherents live in this fantasy.

    Re: Sanctism - I actually thought the lack of proper dogma was kind of part of the point - the only core belief that we know about in Sanctism is the hierarchy of tribes, putting everyone into their 'proper place' and providing authority. It seemed like they were distilling the harmful parts of religion down into it's bare essentials for the game to drive the point home more firmly and to not associate it with any ONE religion but make it so it can apply to any when utilized in such a way. The 'emptiness' of Sanctism other than as a means of controlling people and settling anxiety in people's hearts (I know how the world works, it works with these people at the top, and other people below and that's how it should be and should always stay, not unlike The Outer World's Scientism!) felt, to me, to be intentional and both a source and outgrowth of the 'stagnation' since it reinforced stagnation by saying 'this is how it should be and changing it is unholy'.

    • @bluemori2822
      @bluemori2822 День тому

      I definitely agree that the emptiness of the religion feeds into what the purpose of Sanctism is. I guess my criticism is that with some extra effort they could have easily made the religion more realistic. People project their anxieties onto religion often and the biggest reason for that is because it rationalizes their existence. In order for a person to realistically adhere to that, *some* sort of proof is needed. Even if that proof is fabricated.

    • @daniig3059
      @daniig3059 День тому

      @@bluemori2822 They did address that in the second trial: Sanctism takes what wonders of the old world/the truth there is and rebrand them as part of Sanctism and uses their power/the power of magla as 'proof' of them knowing the 'truths' of reality. Giving specifics on creation myths then turns into a lot of people in the audience/players examining the story to see how much of it is 'true' and and how much of it isn't when that isn't really the point but people will focus on it or use it to misunderstand the narrative theme. Think about all the youtube videos 'explaining' how the villain's beliefs have a point because this tiny piece of it makes sense if you look at it sideways and squint. I can see them wanting to avoid that whole thing by not making it the beliefs (no one in the audience can argue the beliefs because they don't know them!) something someone could defend.

    Thank you for the video, especially for the references to other games and Jung's theories. I've been waiting for an analysis of the Metaphor theme since the game's release. But I'd also like to add an aspect that is important in the Persona series and also in Metaphor - relationships between people. "a hero without allies is nothing more than a lone dissenter". Louis is a typical antagonist in this sense, his team is built on the principle of the superiority of the strong, not on common values like Will's team. He does not recognize mutual support, which is important for the survival of those who are weaker. Louis, after the attack on the village, become reserved and does not trust anyone. Relationships are vulnerability, and pure strength is the solution to vulnerabilities. He is afraid of close relationships, and this fear shapes all his behavior and the principles of his ideal world: it is a world of loners, where everyone is for themselves. Yes, you can't completely shift the responsibility for your anxieties to someone else, this is common in the views of Louis and Will, but if you can't cope on your own, in Louis's world you will die, in Will's world - you will be given a helping hand. So, although Louis may seem like a strong-willed person, he too succumbed to his fears.

    Deep talk, good analysis One thing I don’t fully agree on though is the Louise part. True, he does not this out of sadist joy. Or an evil for a sake of evil. However his magla burst is not so self contained as you made it say. Because in that one moment, all his exact words are gone, and the true depth of him are shown. Because another thing that makes Louise interesting is that by the end of the game, the unstoppable smug villian that has always portrayed as immovable and one step ahead, Is deep down a hypocrite and a slave to anxiety as well. Louis acts as he does because he feels he knows what is right and knows the truth and see people weak for closing their eyes to truth willingly, which is why he hates liars But when facing thoose that deny him and feel the need to confront their anxiety, it is he that gives in to it. Basilio line on that is some tragic irony on Louise part, in the end he just did not understand the depth of anxiety Which sums up the story well, anxiety is not easily controlled, it is in us all. And to face it is to either submit or succumb to it, the story tells well how that can shape the fantasy Of being stronger In ideals

    Great video, Metaphor has such an interesting story, characters, world building and twists. My favorite game of all time. 18:09 I felt the over inflated price for igniters was a way to show that the Church tried to exploit the masses, both for the production and purchase of igniters, as well as trying to gain the military edge by suppressing real magic. Also, the world ending is, in my opinion, a clear reference to weapons of mass destruction, especially the last dragon and the relics sidequest.

    Finished the game, but it's still kinda shit tbh It feels like playing some generic anime superhero, writing and story apart for few good moments is very shallow and primitive (every western RPG dev would be ripped apart if they came with such stuff) side quests feel like some cheap asian MMORPG, game tries to be cute and serious/edgy at the same time, but it fails, because it's hard to take evil demons and angels seriously if you dumpster them with your cute waifus and pets. Half of the time I wasn't trying to get some awesome skill or demon nor defeat powerful enemy, but figure out how to climb for some fame loot on top of the building xD Still had some kino moments like visiting haunted school with your waifus, Yuzuru/Hayataro boss, Quadistu fights and music for them or first Nuwa encounter, but for me series suffer from Final Fantasy syndrome already eating on its own tail. I liked SMT because it was this edgy niche RPG stuff where I didn't know what to expect, but now it feels like they want to release same game every time but with same mechanics, same endings and same weird characters with retarded motivations. Love you Yoko, but maybe destroying the world because cars kill many peple doesn't make sense if you will kill 99.9% of them in the process anyway? BTW if this was this awesome version I don't event want to know how bad vanilla was and just pass on it.

    Smt creators should try prophet mohd as villain in SMT 6. Then there will be no SMT 7 nor any Atlus exist anymore 🤣🤣🤣

    I view Dazai's heel turn in Vengeance as him leaving the place of law rep and just becoming a villain, or at the very least an antagonistic force. Also, something that I would like to mention about Tao's and Yoko's panagia forms is that they both have a little bit of the colors of the other, Tao has red and Yoko has a greenish blue, a stark contrast to their respective full goddess forms, Tao's blue and white ans Yoko's red and black, wich goes to show how much both of them took from other in the Canon of Vengeance.

    Appreciate you not making the video all about Meguro. I feel like Atlus REALLY needs to do a Theatrythm style, SMT music game where it isn't just Persona but ALL of their music. I like the original Persona sound over the PSP versions. Sounds less grimey.
