The "rule of thumb" was/ is (?) a legal term with a very negative story. It was legal to beat your wife with a stick the same circumference of your thumb but no larger. Maybe call it a different moniker?

I dont get it?🤔... 2 meters is just over 6ft... How do you get that from the tree to the road is only 6 ft?🤔... Then you x 10 = 60ft or 20m 🤔... My point is where or how did you arrive at the distance between your thumbs were only 2 meters???🤔

Nice. But...as a knife maker I cringed seeing your Mora stuck in the dirt. Rocks in soil can chip high carbon steel knife tips. The sand also doesn't do the edge any favors. Now go and sin no more :)

The actual Rule of Thumb goes back to the late 1600s when a man was allowed to discipline his wife or children by thrashing them with a stick so long as the stick was no bigger than his thumb. Thank goodness we took something barbaric and used the same scale to do something positive and creative.

4:55 *I think most people that can guess the approximate distance between the two sighted thumbs without actually walking to the target, can most likely guess the distance between them and the target destination anyway without using this "rule of thumb".* *What I wonder is, if anyone has invented a way to guesstimate the distance between the sighted thumbs in the first place. Assuming the person doesn't have any clue about how high distant objects are. Now THAT would be a game changer!* *Interesting video, thanks*

Remember Brexit! Remember the metre is an abstract unit of measure, it was incorrectly calculated at the time of Napoleon. The imperial units are related to human dimensions. So that is what you should use when gauging distances. Be one with the processes of nature.

Actually pretty accurate that’s a good trick to judge distances indeed but it can only work for relatively close things, with far away distances it becomes nearly impossible to judge

If we are just guessing at "2 M", and on the second example, "20 M", then what's the point of this? Just look at your target and guess the distance, since this strategy relies completely on guessing distances in the first place.

Way too confusing.... If you are a size 9 boot or shoe UK that's around 300 millimetres so stand heal to tow three times and then add a little bit on and it should make a metre... then watch something floating down the water count how many seconds it takes to pass the metre, then you can find out how many metres per second the water is flowing...
