Hi Ms.Sun, Thank you for all the information as I was confused because I met with the counselor at my community college yesterday and she told me I am ineligible to transfer to a UC since I’m over 80 semester units by the time I complete my major course preparation. So just to clarify if for the first year and half I wasn’t sure what to pursue as my degree and I took random classes leading me to now have 57 credits and I now want to pursue a biochemistry degree after completing my major preparation courses that puts me roughly at 95 units since I attend a California community college (Long Beach city college) I can still apply to a uc as long as I have my major preparation complete and have a gpa that is competitive for the uc I apply too?
You are still eligible for UC transfer admission as long as ALL of your units are from community college and you don't have any UC or four-year college upper-division units. Keep in mind you will only be allowed to apply a maximum of 70 semester toward your UC graduation unit requirement (but you will receive subject credit for all of the courses you completed).
Hi Ms.Sun, I am a currently CCC student planning to take 75 semester units in CCC. However, I was a four-year university student out of California, attended three semesters, and got 40 lower-class semester units. So my total semester units are 115, but I am not sure which previous college classes are UC translatable courses. I wanted to go to UC, so I transferred to CCC. I am taking classes again from scratch to transfer to UC and will meet my transfer requirement with only CCC classes at the end of Spring 2025. Do I meet the credit requirements to transfer to UC? Also, do I have to fill in my previous college classes on the application and, or just send a transcript to UC? Thank you so much!
You should be fine meeting minimum unit requirement. If all of your four-year college credits are from lower-division courses, you should not hit the maximum unit limit. If there is course (content) duplication between courses you took between the four-year college and CCC, you will only receive credit for a single course (for example, if you took a microeconomics class at the four-year college and took another microeconomics class at CCC, you will only receive credit for ONE microeconomics class, not both). You need to report all college courses you completed on the UC Application.
@@askmssun Thank you so much!
@@efm5882 I'm happy to help. My best wishes to you and good luck!
@@askmssun Thank you so much, I have one more question. If so, what will my GPA be? Will it be calculated by summing the two colleges? Or will only my GPA at CCC be considered? Thank you.
@@efm5882 All courses the UCs consider to be transferable, excluding duplicated courses (only the first course will count), will be calculated into the GPA used for transfer admission evaluation.
Hello Ms. Sun. I have taken 32 semester units at my current (non state) liberal arts school. Some of the courses I've taken here might not be transferable for credit to the UCs. If these courses I've taken are not transferable for any credit, do they count towards the 80-90 unit admission eligibility cap? Thanks
Units that are determined to not be UC-transferable would not count toward the limit. You can find UC guideline on what courses would be considered UC-transferable at admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/preparing-transfer-students/transfer-credit-practice.html
Always thank you for your help. One more question has been on my mind. I changed the planned courses in the last spring quarter so I submitted the new TAU on Feb 28th. I wonder if UCB accepts the new update in coursework after the TAU deadline, which is JAN 31st. Of course, I submitted the first TAU before the deadline and the courses changed are all GE courses. I would really appreciate it if you could help me with this. Always thank you so much.
I asked to all the other UCs and they said they accept TAU until March but Cal answered kinda ambiguously, so I did not get if they were updating my course schedule with TAU submitted on Feb 28th.
When you submit additional updates, the campus is aware of them, but it's generally at the discretion of the campus to decide whether to take the new information into consideration (so there is often a disclaimer that they don't guarantee the information will be considered). In my experience, positive updates can be helpful and lack of updates can sometimes hurt the student (for example, if you had an English class in Winter, which is an eligibility requirement, updating the UCs that you completed the course and received a good grade can sometimes be the difference between getting admitted and getting waitlisted/rejected). Again, Berkeley may not want to obligate itself to review every single change that comes in, but in specific instances (finishing English, math, major preparation requirements), an update may sway the campus (it certainly wouldn't hurt, unless you were dropping classes or reporting bad grades).
@@askmssun Thank you for the reply. Your replies helped me a lot (maybe more than the school counselors..)! I got into Irvine, I wanted to tell you ...smth like the students telling their results to their teachers... Ms. Sun, I appreciate you. Hope you have a good day :))
@@dohandoh Glad I could help and congratulations!!!
Hi Ms.Sun, I got waitlisted to UC Davis this year for Computer Science and I wanted to know how many students the campus generally admits off the waitlist a year? May I ask what is my chance of getting into UC Davis? Also, I want to appeal to Berkeley after getting rejected from Fall 2024, I want to mention my conditions and tell them I am an Asian male and I come from a low-income family, raised by a single parenthood, take family responsibility (like cooking for grandparent since high school start), and do my best to participant in EC about my passion on CS major, may I ask how successful will my appeal be?
Your chance of coming off the waitlist depends on how many admitted students commit to Davis (and perhaps CS specifically - it is a very popular major and Davis has to keep an eye on the number of students coming in) and there isn't a good way to predict what the masses might do. For the appeal, it's up to Berkeley to decide if the information you provide is compelling. If you want to appeal, go ahead and see what happens.
How long should an appeal be
Within any length limit of the campus, take as much room as you need to explain everything fully; don’t needlessly make the appeal too long or too short.
If I applied as a out of state student but am now considered an in state student, should I include that in my letter of appeal?
There are different pros and cons to being a resident vs. nonresident applicant and it’s not always going to be obvious which might be more advantageous to your situation. I would say go with whatever your gut tells you because there is no right answer and it’s a gamble either way.
I got rejected from UCI and I really want to go there. I'm considering an appeal with sensitive information that I didn't talk about on my UC application since it was in November (which was also application season) so it was new and very vulnerable to me so I didn't want to talk about it; I didn't know how to as well. It affected me mentally and throughout my senior year (in which they requested for my first-semester transcript) which is why my grades dipped compared to soph/junior year. In what way can I talk about it to make my case stronger?
Stick to the facts, quantify the challenges and their impact on your academic achievements, and emphasize how/why you are capable of succeeding academically at UCI.
@@askmssun How much should I talk about it (i.e. what percentage of the letter)? Also, it asks for other documents if I have some, what are the strongest types of "documents"?
@@Daniel-pp8cn I don't know what you plan to talk about so I don't know how much you should talk it. I don't know anything about you or your situation so I can't really comment on what documents you should submit.

Hi, I am currently a CCC student... and wondering if UCLA, UCB, and UCSB accept taking two IGETC GE courses (such as history) P/NP. My major is natural science, so I heard it won't really matter. I would like to double-check tho. I would appreciate it if you could help with this, thank you:)
If you are talking about courses only for IGETC (not for major prep and excluding Areas 1A, 1B, and 2), you can have up to 14 semester (21 quarter) units P/NP.
@@askmssun Thank you for your reply, Ms.Sun. I just have one more question, I would appreciate it if you could answer me. So, If I take a class in Area 3B P/NP in the winter quarter (when is included in the last two quarter), is there a possibility of UCLA, UCB, and UCSB rescinding the admission offer in the future? I saw some provisions stuffs related to admission contracts on the reddit and college confidential, and found that most of ppl are required to get no more than two Cs. I am concerned bc I am taking one in P/NP, not letter grade. I am sure that I am going to pass this GE course, though. Will this affect the admission offer in the future?
@@dohandoh The UCs can cancel admission offer if you don't pass courses and/or have a low semester/quarter GPA in Winter and/or Spring. This is the case regardless of whether some of your courses are P/NP grading.
Hi Ms. Sun, I did two semesters at a CSU and accumulated 27 units. I enrolled full-time at a community college this summer and will have over 75 units in total (CSU + CC excluding AP credits) by the time I apply. All of them were from lower division classes. Is there a risk of me being in senior standing if I take a full course load in the spring after application and go over the 90 semester unit cap? Thank you
As long as your CSU units are lower-division, you will NOT reach senior standing. Keep in mind that you are still subjected to the "transfer credit limitation" of 70 semester units (you can only apply a maximum of 70 semester units toward your UC graduation unit requirement but you will retain subject credit for all transferable courses you completed).
@@askmssun awesome, thank you for confirming!
Hi Ms. Sun! I currently attend a UC school but am planning on attending community college next year. By the end of this year, I will have 56.5 quarter units excluding AP units. So if I am understanding this correctly, does that mean I can only take 48.5 units next year at my CC to be eligible to transfer? Thank you!
I constantly see students screw up the unit calculation because they forget to convert quarter to semester units or vice versa. If you have 56.5 UC quarter units (37.67 UC semester units), you can only take up to 63 quarter units (42 semester units) at community college before you exceed the unit cap for Berkeley, Davis, Merced, and Riverside. You can take up to 73 quarter units (48 semester units) for UCLA, and up to 78 quarter units (52 semester units) for Irvine, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz.
@@askmssun I see, thanks! I would imagine exceeding 63 quarter units is pretty unlikely within 1 year at community college. So as long as I stay below that I should be fine to apply to all campuses correct?
@@sanjaynaidu4961 "Normal load" for an an academic year, as well as the minimum number of units you need to complete to qualify as a CCC transfer, is 30 semester units. If you add a class or two over the summer (such as making sure you will complete the English requirement for UCI TAG), it's not that difficult to get to or exceed 42 semester units (you may also have lots of major prerequisite and IGETC requirements you need to complete). I've definitely seen students who have/would become ineligible to transfer due to the unit limitation (this is especially a problem for STEM majors).
If I applied to a competitive major with an alternate in the hopes I would still be considered for the alternate in case of rejection, can I argue that I thought my alternate major would still be equally considered? The first major was in the school of business and the second in letters and sciences -- I believe I am a competitive applicant for my specific L&S major.
Berkeley has said that students applying to MET/GMP are automatically considered for admission to the campus (engineering or L&S) if not admitted to Haas.
Hello Ms Sun! I got waitlisted at UCSB, is there a probability of me getting in?
Most UCs publish waitlist numbers for the previous year, you can dig them out of the campus updates at admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/events/counselor-conference.html. If you want more information (such as numbers from years prior), I have some resources posted at askmssun.com/uc-waitlist-appeal-cancellation-numbers/.
If you are a student at a UC planning to transfer, does community college coursework you take over summer or during High School count for the Maximum Transfer Credit Limit?
Short answer is yes. Long answer (because it is SO complicated) is at admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/_files/documents/quick-reference.pdf on page 35 (gives you examples of how community college courses have a different set of rules than UC courses). One piece of advice for everyone applying for UC admission: you will NEVER get a Yes or No answer for ANY question you ask about admissions (because, like the tax code, there are always a minimum three caveats/exceptions for every Yes or No answer).
here from davis waitlist
Hang in there 🫂
Thank you, Ms. Sun, I really appreciated the distraction
🫂
Which campuses require 1st-semester grades for waitlists?
I think only UCLA specifically asks you to report senior year first semester grades. Berkeley and Davis give you the option to report senior year first semester grades. I'm relatively certain the other UCs just have a one-click waitlist opt-in (no additional information requested/allowed).
@@askmssun Thank you!
@@dylansan4367 I'm happy to help. If you just applied, it's probably too early to worry about this. Focus on your finals and then enjoy your winter break. Admission-related stress will still be here when you come back.
I am a CCC student applying to a UC this fall with 95 semester credits of UC transferable coursework, all of which were taken at the community college I am attending. With this being said, I think I am considered at senior standing (over 90 units). Taking into consideration the new updates that you have linked below in the comments of this video. Am I considered a "High-Unit Junior or Senior"? Or do those titles not apply to me at all since all of my coursework is from a community college? Please let me know if I am interpreting this new information correctly. I hope this made sense as well. Thank you Ms. Sun!
You cannot reach senior standing if all you have completed is lower-division coursework (California community colleges generally do NOT offer any upper-division coursework).

Thank you for your video. I was a Berkeley student for two years and I withdrew 5 years ago. Now I want to transfer to UCLA to study ethnomusicology. Im trying to take music courses at CC right now (since I didn’t take music courses at Berkeley). Im worried because I have 60 units (not including transferred units from hs), 32 of which are upper division and only 28 that are lower division. Im wondering whether I’m eligible to transfer? And also what my unit cap is for CC units right now since I am going to be taking classes at CC for a year to try and be considered for admission for that major. Thank you!
The part that really confuses me is why If you have only CC credits you can have as many as you want but if you have any upper div. credits those get added to all of the CC credits you have. So if I have 32 upper div credits my cap for all lower div and CC units would be lower than 48 units. Is that correct? Thank you so much for your help.
UC units all count toward the cap and you most likely have already exceeded the ceiling. The UCLA Music School may not use the cap, you will need to contact the school directly to inquire.

Hello Ms.Sun! Do you know if they take people off the waitlist based on major?
Freshman applicants are generally not admitted by major, except for engineering (there are some campus-specific variations though). Transfer applicants are generally admitted by major.
Thanks for the info! I will be transferring from a CC to a UC and have already met all requirements and completed all prerequisites to declare myself an English major. But I will be transferring for spring instead of fall, so does this mean I can spend fall semester taking extra CC classes just for fun since the UC transfer credit limit wouldn't apply to me?
If you have already been admitted for Spring and all of your credits are from CC (no UC or 4-year upper-division units), you may take additional courses during the Fall. However, you need to inform the campus of your intention to take CC classes during the Fall AND you are required to earn passing/decent grades in any UC-transferable courses you take (you can't go around failing/not passing UC-transferable courses because the campus may consider that to be unacceptable performance and cancel your admission offer).
Hey Ms. Sun, I was waitlisted to UCSD for incoming freshman decisions and was wondering if I should be expecting a waitlist drop this first week of May on Friday since it is past the SIR date. I'm assuming that if there is no drop at all then they have already reached capacity and no waves would drop at all, is this idea logical?
That's what I would expect. Although there will be some "melt" (people who commit but then never show up) so sometimes the campuses may make some admission offers during the summer (by the time someone misses the housing deadline and didn't sign up for orientation, the campuses know those people aren't coming). The number tends to be small so don't get your hopes up.
Hello Ms. Sun, I got waitlisted for UC Irvine and I was wondering if its even worth writing a statement or if I should just wait? UCI is my dream school and Im hoping they will consider me.
UCI does not have a waitlist statement and, generally speaking, unsolicited materials will not be reviewed.
Hello Ms. Sun, I got waitlisted to UC Berkeley this year and wanted to know how many students the campus generally admits off the waitlist a year (acceptance rate)? What’s your best guess/estimate?
Admission from waitlist depends largely on the size of the initial admit pool and the yield from that pool, the size of the waitlist opt-in pool, and how quickly everyone else gives up. Kind of a crapshoot going forward.
Can I transfer from UCI to UCSD after my first year
UCSD only considers junior-level transfers. Transfer admission is convoluted and confusing (intercampus transfer even more so). This is not a yes or no question; rather, it requires extensive discussion and back-and-forth to plan (I offer a service if you want to sign up; $520).
Just recently got accepted to UCI but wait list for UCSD. i just love to be in UCSD just for financial situation. Please advice.
Opt-in onto the waitlist and wait. Students offered waitlist option at UCSD are not allowed to appeal and there is no waitlist statement (unsolicited materials are not reviewed).
Thank you so much for your reply.
I’m happy to help.
4.5 GPA presumes you had a great deal of AP courses, that's like being in college while in High School, that doesn't make you well rounded, and its ridiculous that Universities are using this as a lower limit, if they want to see well rounded humans that have a hustle for life, not just for school. So, I'm not convinced that this 4.5 GPA is the lower limit for UCLA etc.
UCLA publishes its admission stats online and, currently (Fall 2021, a pandemic year), the median weighted GPA for admitted freshman applicants is 4.54 (median, meaning you are in the middle, if you have a 4.54): admission.ucla.edu/apply/freshman/freshman-profile
I should also point out that, for a student taking 6 classes each school year, two AP/Honors in 10th + four AP/Honors in 11th + straight A's will yield a 4.5 GPA.
I want to add that, I never said 4.5 is the "lower limit for UCLA." I encourage students to aim for 4.5 because it's just very difficult to get into UCLA with anything less than a 4.5.
Hi! Are you familiar with International Transfer Applicants? I'm currently a 2nd yr student in the Philippines. I'm planning to transfer to a Community College to fulfill the units that I'm missing, but I'm afraid that I'll be taking too many credits then. Is there any way that I may know what units are UC school's willing to credit from my university in the PH?
There isn't an official way to figure out which units the UCs will accept. You can review the guideline published by the UCs at admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/Transfer_Credit_Practice.pdf to make an educated guess. In terms of whether you will exceed the maximum cap, as long as your credits are NOT "upper level" (third or fourth year college courses), you should be ok.
Hey Ms. Sun, for appealing a rejection, I have until May 15. But is it a first come first serve situation? Or does it not matter when I submit, as long as it is by the deadline? For Cal and UCLA by the way.
Your appeal will be reviewed as long as it is submitted by the deadline.

If you can quantify the difficulties and discuss how you coped/overcame them to achieve academic success, sure.
is it risky if i appeal to more than one UC? and if i got a new volunteer opportunity and created a fundraiser would that be something worth writing about?
You can appeal to as many UCs as you want; the campuses do not "compare notes." You should discuss whatever will showcase you as someone who can succeed at the college level.
@@askmssun thank you!! i was also wondering when the college asks for the “basis of the appeal” what does that mean? because SB asks that but then they mention how we shouldn’t talk about our desire to attend there. so i’m just a little lost what this question means
@@dg4403 Basis of appeal = What compelling reason do you have for UCSB to reconsider you for admission.
The admissions process is BS-you can get 4.3/3.9 GPA, take AP and honors classes, have tons of community service, volunteer hours, and club officer and still NOT get in. In the end the process is purely subjective. Anything else is just wishful thinking.
The UCs are looking for very specific information in the Personal Insight Questions and most college application advice you get online or from books tend to be the exact opposite of what you are supposed be doing. Almost all of the applications I'm reviewing now (for appeal and waitlist) lack the same kind of information: why the student wants to attend college (the UCs in particular)/what role college (UC) education will play in the student's future plans, how the student has proven his or her capacity for academic success (with and beyond coursework and grades), what value the student will bring to the campus community (potential for positive contributions). When everyone has at least a 4.2 GPA, providing the kind of information UCs are looking for becomes the differentiating factor. Also remember that the GPA published on the UC admission website is capped; most UCs are looking fully weighted GPA for admission evaluation and the average for Berkeley and UCLA is now in the 4.5 to 4.6 range.
Should I submit my senior year 1st semester grades if they are lower than the GPA I submitted or just leave the grades section blank? Thanks!
If the campus requested the grades, you should provide them (even if they are optional), since not providing them may look suspicious (and do more damage than the actual grades).

yes. UC Berkeley !
Congratulations!!!
Are you aware of weather or not UCLA allows/requires waitlisted applicants to submit a statement? Apparently you cannot appeal if you opt onto the waitlist, and I’m currently torn between joining the waitlist and appealing.
You should opt-in onto the waitlist and provide additional information in the optional waitlist statement. You have a much better chance of coming off the waitlist than to be admitted from appeal.
Ms. Sun thank you for replying. I understand the appeals are rare, but I do feel that I have a compelling argument. I was (single mom) dealing with trauma from my father’s recent death when I applied to the art school....I failed to provide full the context of my personal qualities in my answers to the personal insight questions. I believe I can prove myself to be better qualified than I’d previously shown. With that said, do you still think the waitlist is the best option?
@@aliciateele4327 Use the waitlist statement as your appeal. Not opting-in onto the waitlist significantly reduces your chance of being admitted.
Ms. Sun gotcha! Thank you, I appreciate your advice.
@@aliciateele4327 My best wishes to you and good luck!
