Hi! My name’s Ryan, and I’m a dungeon master and crafter, mostly for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. I’m running the game for a couple of years-long campaigns, and I spend a lot of time building terrain and props for the game table.
I post short-form videos, less than a minute each, almost every day of the week. I talk about encounter designs, one-shot ideas, crafting tutorials, and anything else I do to make the experience at the table better.
I started running the game 5 years ago. My wife and I wanted to try, so I ran a solo campaign for her. After that I started up two long-running campaigns in my city (2 years and 3 years so far) and now I run those just about every week.

What is the vibe of the fey wild?
I don’t mention it in the clip, but I would highly recommend Dael Kingsmill’s video on the feywild. She gets it: ua-cam.com/video/P-3kebL2sFc/v-deo.html
I use a clip in the vide from my short on how I once ran a feywild dragon encounter: ua-cam.com/video/06oWICFZ6eo/v-deo.html

Big thanks to community member PL00T00 for jumping on the call and asking a bunch of really great questions. The key questions in the video are: * How should the party learn about the propaganda in a new location? * Is it better to write out everything beforehand, or improv what you’re going to say? * When the players choose one quest path, how do we make that choice matter? Here are the timeco...

Alternatively you could say theyre "on deaths door"
this video could not have showed up in my feed at a better time, im boutta DM my first game soon and your advice is allowing me to feel less nervous about it, thank you!
This could easily be saved by having another goblin show up to check on the others he would see the adventures and run back to tell his boss the party chases after him bam
I hope my DM doesn't see this
I think when i was new to dm I was always worried about not having enough prepped. I think having some basic prep done and then a table or two for if you need ideas can help you get through that. If you really got stuck it's OK to call for a quick 5 or 10 minute break.
You are not writing a novel. What happened is what the players wanted to happen. Player Agency > Prep.
This is an awesome idea! The players getting the chance to run an enemy in a small encounter is such a good mental shakeup, and I’m sure you have great buy-in. Also, love the way you filmed and lit the foreground and background.
That's an awful example of subverting which isn't a mistake. It wasn't their current quest, it was a random encounter. The players dealt with it. The only mistakes is that you wanted something specific to happen. That's not the DMs job, as I see it. You have to have multiple endings to a scenario, otherwise the characters decisions and actions in the story are worthless.
I loved this just used it in one of my campaigns went great!
"I know a guy" is the Contact Rules from Shadowrun just worse
The things to worry about: A player optimizing and ruining all encounters for you and the rest of the party Players just staying in the starting tavern eating rations, then you got to make stuff happen Players meta gaming and getting mad that your "lore" isn't accurate to their "lore" Running out of content, playing 2 hours and then players wanting to go for 8 more hours ...
You did good, NOW they walk back and notice a support back crew of goblins walking their way. Bum solved. It's a little railroad but unexpected. You can even roleplay the goblins arguing if they are going the right direction to meet their camp. So you still have your goblin encounter but in a different setting and style. Same Shit different toilet. :)
Six is the boat is like yellow for the electric and that beard like the color of the ship and his clothes brown
Great! Sadly I'm paying curse of strahd
Lego
Hey Ryan, I've been hoping into your streams for a few weeks now. Just wanna say thanks for continuing to put stuff out. It is nice to watch while I paint or craft and also while I work on school stuff. I am finishing up my masters and this is just enough stimulus to allow me to be productive without noticing just how much work I am actually doing
Massive temptation to turn that gravestone shield into an artifact idea. Perhaps something that leeches temp hp from the area when creatures hit 0 hit points, and their names and deeds become etched on it for a short time... EDIT: Better idea, it stores these names and then it can be used to cause some sort of spell-like effect of some sort! Maybe something simple as being able to unleash a spell like Arms of Hadar or Summon Undead or something?
Love the minis and how you organized this encounters! The small subtle clues especially anticipating the pcs smell the poison....chef's kiss!
From where can I get foam boards in Ahmedabad india pls tell me I can't access dollar tree
i FREAKING LOVE how organized it iss more video pleaseeee
The ol Pawn Stars rule.
"the game in their way" thats called rail roading buddy
This is epic bosses written by the dungeon dudes.
my brick right in the center <3
Huh, this is actually very similar to something I do with my custom game system. I have a mechanic called 'Last Stand', where any elite combatant (boss, miniboss, or PC) can choose to activate Last Stand when they're standing alone against multiple enemies whose combined levels exceed their own. Once activated, it gives them an immediate boost of temporary hit points, and an action in between each player's action. It acts as a natural second phase for bosses, and enables players to occasionally pull a Boromir.
Thanks!
Holy...😮
Good setup, but who has the space and money for all these pieces of doll house furniture
Nah this is the moment you follow through with what you’ve built. Threaten the town with goblins, the players didn’t find the camp to prevent the attack
Hi Ryan, I’m a big fan of your content. I wanted to know where do you recommend finding minis to print? I’m getting into printing but having a hard time finding what I want. Thanks!
What do you make all those rocks and trees out of?
Oh man, love that dragon idea of exchanging the magic or a true.
Thanks! That was one of my earliest videos. I ran that encounter with my group, and it was great!
Over the summer I worked on a fey villain for hours on stream (Mister Twister, for those who were around for those streams). I hope to be able to release that dungeon and the puzzle terrain in the near future. Do you have a favorite fey character in your world?
Short Answer:hombrew
It certainly helps!
Still wouldn't push me to use it. An I know a guy card is much more powerful than some small secret to go along with it. Plus you could fall into the issue of "Why does X get a cool weapon and I just get exposition..."
That's a good point. It would really depend on the table and the dynamic between the players.
Amazing I’m stealing this forever
Yes! Go for it. And let me know how it works for you!
can i just say, you being happy but not OVER THE TOP is just.. a really nice change. Thank you, friend. You get a sub.
You're very welcome, internet comment friend.
And thanks for the sub!
"Then every decision the players thought they were going to make on their turn will be reconsidered." Soo make them take longer to take their turns because players are super indecisive already.
It's an art more than a science, for sure. For instance, I try to make sure the combat situation changes in some interesting way every round. New enemies, new positions, environment changes, new status effect, etc. So I do want the players to constantly make decisions. Maybe it's a matter of the right kind of decision? It's something to think about.
@@ryanimeldm I would absolutely love to be a player in this situation, as I am great with juggling decisions and making moves. (which is why I'm the DM) My players, however, are likely never gonna be there lol. I have to run a different flavor of game for them. I love the advice! Just not for every table.
Excellent advice for new GMs!
Thanks Yawdro!
Looks very good!
Thanks!
Quite the bridge! Made by hand?
Yup! With a lot of hand-laid bricks too. I need to revisit the paint job, though. I sort of threw it together for an encounter I had planned, but never really finished it the way I wanted to.
Great video! (I'd appreciate if you left the question on the screen for the entire duration of your answer)
Not a bad idea. Maybe the comment moves to the lower corner, or something? I'll give that a shot.
Search up wombat poop then I’ll get back to you on that “nothing in nature is square” idea
If only I had a nickel for every time I heard about wombat poop in the comments of this video... I'd probably have $100 or something, easy.
I never really knew some players had to deal with DMs that made the game “Players Vs DM.” That suddenly hit me when I watching a campaign. The DM was going out of his way to torture the players; to the extent it seemed no one was having fun after a while. I tuned out midway, because it just wasn’t fun to see; couldn’t imagine playing with him. Yes the DM needs to enforce rules, and yes they can’t just hand players the game - but they should be making a grand story everyone loves first and foremost.
It's wild that games like that exist, mostly because I don't know why players would want to keep playing in a game like that. Life's too short! You're 100% right. Some DMs lose track of why we create challenges for the players. It's not to "win" -- we could easily win if we wanted to, we make up the whole world. It's to challenge the characters to, over time, let them become heroes.
Very cool idea
Thanks!
"At this point only a lock pick or a climb through the window will get them in" "Umm excuse me, big bad Gruk the Barbarian laughs in the face of your puny locked door. Gruk casts HAMMER!!" "Gruk, you're not a spell caster" *Gruk starts smashing his maul against the door, rapidly reducing it to splinters* "See...big bad Gruk cast Hammer spell, door unlocked."
Hey great video! Earned a like from me :) just wanted to give some constructive criticism on some video making stuff: I personally also love the hollow knight soundtrack, but some boss themes feel a bit off playing while you’re just peacefully speed drawing, so maybe you could settle for more laid back songs, more “queens garden” and less “haunted foes” still, this might just be a personal preference thing, do whatever you want 👍 secondly, maybe instead of playing the same song over and over when you have a particularly long speed draw, you could switch the music up a bit to steer clear from annoying repetition. Overall great video, wish you the best! :)
Maybe you meant this under a different video? I don't do speed drawing, and I'm not actually familiar with the Hollow Knight soundtrack :)
Very cool!
Thanks!
