The Only Zelda Game With This Mechanic
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has lived rent free in my head for as long as I can remember, but a mechanic slipped under my nose that I've never seen anyone talk about before, or at least that I can find! Have you ever noticed it in play?

Sly Cooper's Most Infamous Level
Переглядів 39 тис.Місяць тому
After 18 years hidden in the dark, today I finally uncover the secrets of Sly 3's titiular Rumble Down Under, a level filled with some of the weirdest design decisions in the entire series. Did this level contribute to the games overall downfall? Or, did the already cult following become even more vague as time went on? Find out today! Thank you so much to Lady of Dragons for making the thumbna...

Thank you! Cheers!
@LootVT your welcome 😁
Hell Nah, bently ratting out the gang on youtube🤬🤬🤬
Yall know this definitely awaken something in kids back then.
one thing that's interesting about the save in majora's mask is that in the japanese original, there wasn't an owl system!! maybe why it doesn't feel v integrated.
I never knew that! Strange that it changed so much between Regional and World releases!
I recently played Luigi's Mansion 3 Seems random but it has an auto save system which was fine, but sometimes annoying and inconvenient, but fits well with how Luigi's Mansion 3 is played. I'm also in the process of playing Skyward Sword which only lets you save in certain spots. This makes saving much more important and makes you think about it more. Ocarina of Time's saving system works really well for it's game, although in terms of Zelda I perfer what they've recently done which is a mix of autosaves and quick manual saves (although not as quick as oot)
Definitely! And at the end of the day it’s not the biggest of deals to have autosaving. I just find it super interesting whenever a game does include it in place of manual saving!
Uh!? That's not a "mechanic".. Saving is the mechanic, and how one gets to it is a design choice limited by the game's inner workings and console architecture (amongst many other elements). For a channel trying to cover mechanics as a topic.. I'm immediately disappointed.
Thank you for repeating everything I said in the video, but just in case, I’ll recap it for you! Saving is, by definition, a mechanic, and I talk about how the player uses it! I also bring up 3-4 reasons as to why the game is saved the way it is in Ocarina of Time! On top of all that, I briefly touch on the psychology of how saving the game impacts the gaming experience! Hope this helps!
n64 controller uncomfortable? I legit like that controller.
….I’m starting to think I’ve been holding it wrong all my life…
Omg! I love your avatar’s design! It’s so peak! 😮✨
Thank you! 😄
preach my dude I love old games and wish more modern youtubers played them in videos and on stream
You'll definitely love what I have in store for the future!
You best get to playing Majora’s Mask soon. Especially since you appreciate Ocarina of Time so much. They are two sides of the same coin, and I don’t think you can truly appreciate MM unless you enjoyed OoT.
Agreed! I'll be coming around to it here shortly c:
I hate ocarina of time's save mechanic. simply because I don't want to save every 3 secondes because it cuts into the experience and its useless.
I can see that! Though, I would argue it's less the saving, and more the constant menu'ing if you forget something, because saving takes like 2 seconds!
Luckily you don't need to save to exit the pause menu.
@@xdragoonzero0 except that in EVERY game every pressing the back button quickly quits the menue and goes back to the game. theres a reason they didn't keep doing it. its bad design.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man, this level! This definitely helped awaken my giantess fetish! My only wish is that there was an alternate ending where Sly fails to get the mask off her and she eventually dwarfs a mountain!
This reminds me of the save feature in Fable. "hero save" it is called, you could use during a quest, to save the progress of your character, specifically, like stats, but not his position in the world itself. Outside of a quest, you had a regular "world save", that was more flexible, and also saved your location in the world.
You actually don't need to use the bow at all in Fire Temple, as that eye switch takes you to a chest you can access by jumping the fence in the adjacent room.
I NEVER KNEW THAT, WHAT
am i seriously the only one who holds the N64 from the top with my left hand?!
Do you primarily use the dpad??? Cause that makes a lot of sense, but I always used the joystick personally!
@@LootVT nope, i used the palm to press L, 4th finger trigger Z, 3rd to brace top of the controller index and thumb to grip the stick ive never seen anyone else use it like this, and i hate the Wii/switch for this verty reason that makes you use only one finger for the joystick... i have no clue why i play this way... it just feels right to me lol!
Looking it up this is apparently the right way to do it??? I suppose when I was younger, because my hands were small, I had to compromise with the way I hold it in the video, and I never adjusted after that!
I love your Sona ^w^
Thank you!!!
It’s always the little things that make a game feel so slick and easy to play.
So much care is put in Zelda games, so much so that the first 3D Zelda still holds up to this day! I’m glad to have made a video about it finally :>
I assume later Zelda games got rid of this input setup because of the overall convention of "confirm button and back button". OoT's saving is certainly quick, but it is counterintuitive. Even at the time, I think SNES and Genesis games had a more universal "confirm and back button" convention. I will say that "map menu options to one button" is much better for turn-based RPGs like Super Mario RPG and Persona 5 though.
I do think it was largely a hardware limitation and that saving was an afterthought in development. That’s why more care was put into it from Majora’s Mask onwards. I’m sad we wont get that fast of saving again, but the way later games save do the Pokemon effect of making players more consciously reflect on saving, so it makes sense.
To me, the process of saving in OoT is ingrained into my brain because of the way the 3 menuing sound effects follow eachother in such a satisfying way. The second best Zelda game at this, would be Phantom Hourglass ( it is nearly as fast ).
Yeah I actually forgot how fast Phantom is! Nothing beats the sheer speed of OoT though!
You're definitely right about how it's almost muscle memory to save in OOT. I was trying to get my nephews into older games. They're 9 and 12. And my younger nephew kinda liked playing it, but I had to explain that the game doesn't autosave. Well it took about 2 minutes for him to gain muscle memory and save every time he opened the menu. And I mean EVERY TIME. The water temple was hell.
Right? I’m glad that I’m not the only one! And hey, the Water Temple IS doable! There is no softlocking! I learned that the hard way TTwTT
I love examining mechanics like this! Super fun video ^w^
Much appreciated!
@@LootVT Still planning a Halloween video too? I'm maaaybe a little hyped for the next one either way >///>
@ ah I wish I had the time to make more than one video a month! Unfortunately I gotta balance work and all my VTubing so I wont be able to make one TTwTT
@@LootVT Well, I guess I'll just have to tune into your stream some time then :3
Can confirm! very fascinating stuff :D!
Amazing job on the video :D! I love it when people can go in-depth on something I never even thought about, I feel like I've learned something new 💙
I’m glad you like it Pk!! It means so much to me that you enjoy it 🩵🩷
Great stuff! I love the editing you did at the beginning :)
Originally thought this was gonna be about "Vicious Voodoo" and how the remaster janked up the timing of Mz. Ruby's boss fights between versions. But "Lemon Rage" is one of my favorite missions in the whole series so this level kinda gets a pass from me.
At least it has that! I might talk about Vicious Voodoo in the future though!
these kinds of video essays about topics so obscure and specific are the exact types of videos I love. keep it up. <3
I'll keep at it for sure!
This is honestly great. The way that mechanics are built really does affect how we play games.
Definitely! People sleep on saving the game!
Link truly is the greatest hero of all time, they're able to save the entire world in only 3 button presses!
And like, 5 seconds of menu time per item!
Another great video!!
Thank you! I had a ton of fun making it, so much so that I just HAD to record live segments for it!
this video is so pleasant and good
These are descriptors for yourself as well!
You absolutely should play through Majora's Mask. Even if you don't do a 100% run, it's my favorite one in the series for a reason. Even if I admit it isn't the best game, I love it.
When I went to play a few hours of it as b-roll for the video, I hadn't realized just how much time had passed because I was INVESTED. I will definitely be coming back and finishing it for real!
I think Majora's Mask is one of the best Zelda. Of course there are some flaws but to me it's the most rewarding Zelda out there ! The game is a big puzzle !
pet the spooder 🕷🕸
Better watch out! I might bite!
@@LootVT 😭
Thank you everyone for watching! I know this is a bit of a weird topic to bring up, but regardless I'd love to hear what you think! It meant a lot to me to make this video, so I hope you enjoy regardless. Edit: inb4 people tell me I'm silly c':
Tbh, i feel like the attempts to paint the gator and carmalarge segements as "poorly designed fetishes" are in bad faith. The tropes of nature fighting back and size change have existed long before this game. It seems much more likely that the rushed development you mentioned had them take the easy way out. "We need to work on the Australian chapter but the pirate chapter has grown so large." - "eh just make it a spooky magic object, their recruiting a shamen so it fits." - "But wouldn't fighting a floating mask by itself be wierd?" - " just make it attach to enemies, have each section be a bunch of arenas with gimics with the designs we allready have done... you could even save more time by just having Carmelita be the chapter boss. Just say some magic mumbo jumbo turned her into a giant monster or something."
Honestly it could have gone down that way! I just think it just a little strange that all of these things just so happened to fall within one chapter, so I thought it’d be fun to point it out in a fun and humourous way! 20 years ago, what I insinuate in the video could just be sheer coincidence, but part of me always wondered if there was something else at play.
@@LootVT also fair. The human brain can be wild and loves to sneak stuff in. At the end of the day the carmalarge is still a very fun sequence that I'm sure left a uh... 'positive' impact, depending on your outlook, on all those who played it. Myself totally excluded. >_> definitely. /nervous joking tone.
I mean, it’s not a bad fetish….
Even as a kid I was somewhat unsettled by the fact that Bentley was having Murray outright murder these guards by feeding them to the croc, compared to the cartoonish defeats other enemies suffered prior (aside from if you knocked them into fire or water). Like, yeah, these guards are plundering the environment to dig up opals and locked up the Guru, that's pretty dickish, but does that mean it warrants them straight-up death? Sheesh. And keep in mind, the very next episode has Bentley sic a giant wolf on the Black Baron's guards. What is his problem?
Well sense you seem to be starting to show a pattern of a Sly Cooper tuber, you consider doing any top 10 list for your favorite villains from the series?
I know I've made 2 in a row, but I promise my content wont be all Sly Cooper! I'll be coming back to it in a little bit, don't worry!
A lot of people complain about this chapter lacking a regular Villain like the other chapters but i think its a nice change of pace for once, i have seen people who suggested that the Miners should have had a Foreman/Overseer to serve as the Villain for the chapter but id honestly argue this Foreman/Overseer Villain wouldn't be that very interesting because as we can easily deduct both him and his workers are obviously tearing up the Australian Outback looking to get rich of mining for Opals. Having the Mask of Dark Earth present is more interesting cause then the Cooper Gang has to take care of both the Miners and the Mask instead of just one problem/villain as usual, Also having the Mask of Dark Earth be there is a nice twist as it serves as the consequences of the Miners own actions as they simply dug too deep in an area where they shouldn't have been mining in the first place. I do agree that having the mask constantly escape any attempt at destroying it got boring/old quickly because we had no idea if we were damaging the Mask at all or if was possible to even damage the Mask in the first place and i do wish they developed the mask more with lore/information or maybe even vaguely a personality but mainly to have each encounter with the Mask be much more unique and interesting in a way. Personally i've always been curious just how much of the person is left or present when the Mask takes control over their mind and how much the Host of the Mask's original personality affects the Mask itself, Like how we saw the big possessed Dingo in Lemon Rage that was just jabbering nonsense meanwhile Carmelita when possessed was speaking english normally at first anyway, so like does the person's personality affect the Mask at all and also does it matter if the Host of the Mask is a strong minded individual or not.
So excited for your next video ^w^
Keep an eye out for the 30th!
I don’t think it’s fair to say The Guru’s depiction was racist or semi-racist. I don’t know much about Australian Aboriginal tribes, but I know today in Africa, there are still remote regions with cannibalistic tribes that only speak very obscure languages. Someone I know knew of a Christian ministry group that was last contacted in an area that was known to have cannibal tribes roaming about. The people in this group mysteriously vanished and were never seen again.
7:42 Counterargument: Could anyone survive being thrown into a water pump and have it overflow to the point of exploding? Sure being fed to a crocodile is...Brutal, but at LEAST it is over quickly, the poor rats in Chapter 1 of Sly 2 are drowning in a water pump, acting as fodder to make it blow up, that is just insane. Oh, and there is also the Death Traps Bentley uses on the wolves in Chapter 5. ...DEATH TRAPS...You know, squashed, impaled, drowned in a kraken infested sewer...Sly 2 also had its brutal moments, just sayin. This was not to flank on your video btw, I like it alot and I do agree Moon Crash was a bit...Jarring. I just wanted to put my input on Sly 2 Brutality
Yeah after I made this video and people reminded me of ALL the things that you do in Sly 2, I agree that this point wasn't as strong as I would've hoped lol. I think I might have put too much personal emphasis on how Sly and the gang try to NOT kill the villains of each mission (except Clock-La and Clockwerk, though they are edge cases). It just seems so strange that they would harm the henchmen so nefariously but let the villains off with a major beating!
@@LootVT I suppose it boils down to like, character relevancy, the main villains are always the highlights, while almost if not all of the guards are literally just there to act as obstacles in your way. Plus, asides Jean Bison and Arpeggio, who die to outside sources, the only villain that dies that is, you know, not a mask, is LeFwee after Penelope sends him to the sharks, but to be fair the pirate setting made sense.
A video essay on Sly Cooper that randomly popped up in my recommendations? Don't mind if a-doo. Your nasaly voice rivals Bentley's tho- Didn't know this level was infamous, but I always definitely considered it the worst. Horrible missions (with 1 exception) and ugly, brown and dark green environments.
this was interesting i wouldn't have thought this would be considered the worst level in the game, I personally would have pegged it for any of the minigame hells that was the Vicious Voodoo missions from Sly 1. Piranha Lake, A Ghastly Voyage, Down Home Cooking not to mention each ones challenge modes for 100% then again not many people really remember Sly 1 in any great detail since of the three AND ONLY THREE games it was the weakest
I wouldn't necessarily imply that this is the "worst" mission. But it is memorable for better or for worse because of it's strange structure, story elements (or lack thereof) and the fact that it includes things that no other mission in the series does! I actually personally rank the trilogy 2 > 1 > 3, but I also have a massive soft spot for Sly 1. Heck, I even made a video where I speedrun killing Murray as fast as possible!
This was one of my favorite levels of the whole series lol
Oh, why was it your favorite?
