      Almost all singles figure skaters are well under six feet tall, including the men, most of which average around 5'6 to 5'9. Having a smaller body with shorter limbs helps the athlete move and rotate quicker because they have a shorter range of motion. It's for this reason that most gymnasts are in that height range, as well, and the women can be even shorter, 4'8 to 5'4. This is why a tall figure skater or gymnast can look clumsy because it takes more time for their long limbs to move through the same actions because they have a longer range of motion. You might notice divers are also well under six feet tall and in the same height range, as well. Any sport that requires twisting, rotating, flipping, or turning quickly is performed much better with a smaller, shorter body. The only exception to this rule is the men in pairs skating because they need to lift the woman, and it's her that's doing 90% of the jumping and rotating in the throw jumps, not him. As such, male pairs skaters tend to be the tallest of all skaters.

    I always wonder what exactly compels people to come to a Nathan video to leave comments like “I don’t like his style”. Now I can understand you watch a video that includes other skaters and you are commenting on who you like better. But it makes no sense to watch the video of only nathan and then say, I never like his style. Then why are you here?

  • @MsAMusicLover
    @MsAMusicLover 2 роки тому

    I know you all love Nathan, but I don't find the "natural, casual style" as compelling as many do. Particularly his posture, which always seems rounded and crunched up in the shoulders. Without the multiple astounding quads, to me Nathan is just pleasant. I prefer the Jason Brown or Patrick Chan style -- perfect posture/body lines and precise choreography. Or (of course) the Yuzuru style which has the perfect body positions and posture + the jumps. No argument that Nathan is a feat of nature, but different styles resonate with different fans.

      I don't find Jason's posture appealing, personally. He has a strange posture with a protruding butt. If it appeals to others, that's fine too. However, to say that someone is perfect is just not true because, clearly, different things appeal to different people. Art is so subjective. Same with Yuzuru. Not a fan of his carriage, especially the carriage of his upper body and droopy arms. It's quite noticable when he's trying to set up his jumps. To me, Nathan has the cleanest lines out of all three. Although his shoulders are loose and relaxed, he has nice arms, wrists, and hands. And he points his toes and has beautiful turnouts, prob because of his ballet background. Like I said, different things appeal to different people.

    I love that in-between the positive gushing for this new EX and chuckling at Nate's seemingly-looks-like-marbled-meat tie-dye shirt, everybody appears to have batted a blind eye at the backflip near the end of the program. I mean, it's always impressive when he does it, and not every day you see an Olympic Champion do a backflip on ice. For me, it kind of seems out of place in terms of the vibes this program gives off? Only really a minor complaint, but Nate looks like a different skater w/ this EX. And I love it.

    I hope Nathan can do more pieces like this. I know he likes more upbeat music and hip hop but this kind of program suits him so well. I feel like this program really highlights his strengths. Wish he wouldn't have abandoned so much of his artistry during competitions, imagine seeing this kind of energy and commitment to choreography all throughout his career. I hope he continues doing shows once he goes back to school. I wanna see him develop even more artistically.

    • @sporeKAfan
      @sporeKAfan 2 роки тому

      He usually uses upbeat music for his short program and slow music for his long program as a contrast. I feel that his strength is being a well-rounded skater with a balanced mix of artistry and technical excellence as well as very versatile in different choreography styles and not limited to just one particular style. He did win the past three Worlds Champ with contemporary dance programs like "Mao's Last Dancer", "Land of All" and "Philip Glass". The thing is that he is doing 4 to 5 difficult quads in a program, so it is hard to have very complex choreography while still having the stamina and stability to finish the jumps. For Space Song program, there is not much technical content, so he can focus more on the choreography. If you check out his latest Mozart program, he has been adding hand expressions like the Space Song program which is something different from other skaters.

    I can't watch this number without smiling. It's simply beautiful, very pleasing and relaxing. Not timed for difficult jumps (although they're always welcome), Nathan can give himself to full expressions with his arms and upper body. I see a mixture of classical and modern movements, the ways he feels the music. When he kneels down, I wish the camera didn't cut too close because the viewers lost sight of his full body movement. I love the little "compass" around 2:24 and the ice shave toss that follows, how free and sweet they make you feel. One thing, the shirt's color and busy pattern are a bit distracting. Other than that, what a special moment for the live audience and home viewers, it feels like the best of Nathan Chen is still ahead, this amazing athlete has more to offer us.

      @@cyrra8865 To be fair to Shae Lynn and Chen, choreographing a competitive program vs an exhibition program are two different things. The first is more stringent with timing to fulfill various technical requirements. Nathan Chen wouldn't be able to take time and skate like what you see here. Expecting Chen to be this "artistic" at the same time jumping 5 quads is unrealistic. He wouldn't have enough time or energy, nobody could do that.
