This DIY video shows how I replaced the canvas top on my 911 Cabriolet. The original top had a plastic rear window that cracked. The new top I installed has a glass rear window. The glass window is smaller than the original plastic window, but it's really nice to have glass now. The main thing this video will accomplish is it will persuade you not to take on a project like this.

    I have a problem, I connected such lamps according to the MINI instructions and they do not work. The manual only says about connecting the A1 cable (yellow and blue), but there is no information about connecting two additional wires from this bundle (A1), and I can see that you have also connected?

    Very impressive! I just got my 996 convertible top back from being serviced and they screwed up a few things; I used your video to help me sort them out but had a couple of questions: 1. They didn't connect the plastic ribs that hold the headliner in place right above the driver and passenger ; I could feel them and was able to push them in on the ends but not all the way across. They should connect all way, correct? If so, do you just keep applying pressure or is there another trick to get them to seat? I was pushing pretty hard. 2. They didn't re-glue the headliner fabric in the front so I used 3M Adhesive spray to pull it around and get it in place. That actually worked well and it looks good. 3. My dash rocker button that opens and lowers the car doesn't work now, although I can open and close it with the key. Does that switch have it's own line and is it the one you disconnected early in the video? Thanks for taking the time to post this; I wish I'd seen it before I took my car in, I think I could have fixed most, if not all, the issues myself.

    Hi guys, great video! Thanks much! I replaced the starter on my 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera Convertible (997) three months ago with a Bosch starter from Amazon (CAN $315.00). It solved my "hot start" problem and took me about 4.5 hrs to do. A few notes: The Porsche Workshop Manual is pretty much useless in explaining how to do it (job #27 60 19). On the 997, I also had to remove the alternator to reach the bottom left fastening screw of starter; even then it was very tricky. I have no idea how I could have done it without removing the alternator! When putting in the replacement starter, I used electric tape to limit the movement of the u-joint of a rather long extension. As mentioned below by Chassis Hawk, the u-joint needs to be close to the socket. I also wrapped electric tape around the head of the fastening screw to prevent it from falling out of the socket when feeding the bottom left fastening screw back into its place. I found this to be the trickiest part of the job! Unlike shown in the video, I managed to remove the throttle body in one piece, though. I undid all four metal hose clamps and was able to wiggle the hose on either side loose, before pushing them sideways out of the way with a screw driver. This way, I was able to remove the throttle body in one piece. Putting the throttle body back in again was the same procedure in reverse. Be careful with the plastic oil filler tube as it is easy to break while working on replacing the starter. --- Replacing the starter solved my "hot start" problem that bugged me for almost 2 years. With only 56,000 km on the motor, the vehicle was reluctant to start when engine was hot. First thing I did was replace the battery (CAN $470.00). That improved things for a short while, until I experienced the same "hot start" issue. The Porsche dealer suggested to replace the battery cable. They did for CAN $1,000.00. Some 10,000 km later, the "hot start" issue was back. I had to charge the battery every couple of weeks to have enough power to crank the motor when hot. According to the various fora, the last thing to replace was the starter; I did that and have put 3,000 km on the vehicle since. Vehicle starts like a charm whether engine is hot or cold. It appears that over time, the heat of the engine fries the starter (and also the cables). Very happy to have done the job myself - puts a smile on my face every time I turn the key! :) Thanks again, Chassis Hawk!

      @@aboyandhisdog I probably could have done it myself and replace the starter and the cables at the same time. There are other videos explaining how to do it (e.g. ua-cam.com/video/SDJ50RaF8XE/v-deo.html). In my case, I had the dealer replace the cables.

    • @vadimsvoboda
      @vadimsvoboda 4 роки тому

      after viewing this video maybe 70 times i decided to go for it. it took me an hour to reach this f***** bolt. you must have a 3/8 U joint with lots of straight extensions. also: i didnt do it but shrink tubing the joint as advised by S.H. would have made it easier for sure (didn’t want to break and loose the plastic part downthere). i endend up with my right hand guiding the tool thru the space made by the missing air tubes, and helping it the tool to reach the bolt so that you pass between the oil tube and the alternator and place it correctly. I gently use a hammer to have it lock on the bolt, if its not aligned you won’t be able to unscrew it. mine was heavily screwed. My car has 240k kms and the starter has never been removed before apparently i wouldnt recommand to change it for fun if it doesnt make the horrible sound when the engine starts (the starter dented thing doesnt come back in it's position so the wheel makes it turn quicker that it should). The tool and the 2 bolts has to be perfectly lined up or you will swept. There's tons of plastic tubes, electric wires, durites and the oil reservoir tube that make it looks impossible, but it works, its german.. Even to take the old starter out is not so simple. I got a 3,6L and it look even tighter than the 3,4L in the video (or S.H. disengaged some cables?). I'm a beginner and it took me 8 hours. taking out the air planum was easy, take it back was not but again with some force it’s working. Thanks for making this video it has been my Starter Bible. this horrible neigh sound is gone :-) PS: i bought a A.S. to replace my Bosch. 90€ new instead of 240+120€ return of the used one fee. Pardon my english dont know lot of technical terms in english. Hope this will enlight even more the situation.
