I will say that the anime does a poor job at explaining things at the end of after story. The point is that the light orbs are real and in the VN you collect one for each ending, once you have them all you get the good ending where Nagisa lives. It works because you earn it and understand why it happened. All the endings happen in the story and then you get the good one. I've seen many people who have watched it and didn't understand what a visual novel is or that the super natural stuff is Kanon in the world (To be fair I didn't get it either till I played the VN). Studio Key always has stuff like this and it's not for everyone. The VN is better but I still love the anime. Be glad you missed out on Kappei.

I feel like you didn't adequately explain why Clannad sucks, except for the final part about Nagisa. The rest you rushed through it basically just saying "this was disappointing" with no explanation.

(SPOILERS, IF YOU'VE NOT SEEN CLANNAD I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU'RE ON THIS VIDEO, BUT JUST IN CASE) To preface, Clannad (specifically After Story) is in my top 5 anime currently, and has been for a year. But it wasn't always like that, as even though Nagisa's death was the most I've cried to any scene ever (and still is), all the scenes that were "super duper sad" left me somewhat numb, and the ending left me disappointed, somewhat like you. Yet it felt like something was wrong in my approach of the series, and talking about my feelings on it to a friend they suggested that I was so emotionally drained from Nagisa's death that I became numb to everything after to cope. It had been a couple days, I wanted to test it by watching some scenes I thought were disappointing at first. The truth of the matter is, they were right. Do you know how good a series has to be emotionally to be able to literally numb me afterwards? That's when I truly fell in love with Clannad. But I was still somewhat unsatisfied with the ending, so I took to reddit and left my thoughts on how I thought the ending was a copout. People who like Clannad are chill so all of the comments were nice instead of flaming me, but they also changed my view on the ending. It's been a while so I don't remember all of the details, so I recommend you watch "Clannad and Deus Ex Machina" by Under the Scope as that really clarified the ending for me. Essentially, the ending was set up from the very beginning and instead of cheaping out, it actually reinforces the theme that "hey man, life's beautiful and you should truly cherish it" which the ending that results in the death of the family cannot support. I view Clannad as not a wholly sad story, nor a wholly happy story, more of a microcosm of life where there are both truly tragic and happy moments, but the happy moments make it all worth the suffering. I appreciate that you acknowledge the story structure is due to the story's origins as a visual novel (and have even played it, which I haven't even done!), as that's where most of your complaints originate. I also find your expectations going into Clannad as somewhat misleading, and I will leave this comment somebody left me on that reddit post. "But its important to remember that how you feel about a show is very fluid. You don't have to love every show you watch 100%, its okay to just call it average and still appreciate your time spent. And maybe you'll re-watch it one day and it'll be an instant favorite, or you'll despise it, who knows?" If you want to see why people love Clannad, let it come to you instead of forcing yourself to experience it. It personally came at a time in which I was not so sure about my future, and especially resonated with me as a man as it illustrates what men fear and shows how Tomoya overcomes that. I see myself in Tomoya somewhat, and that's why it resonated with me so much. You don't have to like it, no one's forcing you to. But to call it overrated when it didn't gel with you is a misjudgment. You're allowed to not like good things, I personally don't like Fate/Zero and Vinland Saga that much despite them being highly acclaimed, but are they bad series because of it? I don't think so. The reason I made this comment is because of those people on that post who changed my opinion a year ago, I write in hopes to do the same as they did to me, because this series means a lot to me now, and I wish to spread that love, because love is the single element of the world which humans should cherish most. TL;DR UHMMM... YEAH.... YOU'RE NITPICKING AND BIASED... I WIN YOU LOSE!! BYE BYE!!!
