Cutting old valve seat inserts out with the Serdi 3
Using the Serdi 3 to cut out the inlet seat inserts from the old nissan ca18det cylinder head. They have been work hardened but still got through them pretty painlessly. The exhaust seats on the other hand were so hard it just didn’t have the rigidity to safely get through them. So I swapped out to a fixed duel cutter that did go through fairly nicely. Unfortunately that tool was a little undersized so I had to then go in with a single point cutter to trim the last bit out of each seat.
I stoped with three seats to go.
I also show how brand new supertech valves from the box are coming up with some decent runout.

Taking measurements of valves and seats.

Little update on the serdi machines but mainly measuring the valves and seats on the nissan CA18DET practice heads, if you aren’t measuring this stuff you are just guessing! Plus a Honda cylinder head I’ve had done by one of the companies I use for machine work. I’ll get more into the Honda head in the next video.
Serdi 3 balanced and cutting seats, kinda
Переглядів 630Місяць тому
Finally at a point where I’ve cut a few seats… results are putting me at 1-2 thou run out currently. I’ve balanced the spindle but I think it’s about 95% accurate for the ca18det cylinder head I’m working on. Hopefully I can dial that in once the machine is actually fully sorted. This is on the exhaust and as I come to find out they are a much harder material than the inlets.
Almost ready to cut seats and reface valves with the Serdi machines

Going through the machines making sure I understand all the little nuances… tolerance stacking is always on my mind. I want everything perfect but I also know thats not a reality. Of course that doesn’t mean I can’t try.
Serdi 3 and Serdi 2 parts arrive.
Переглядів 3342 місяці тому
Parts have arrived for the Serdi 3 seat and guide machine and Serdi 2 valve refacer. I look at leveling the Serdi 3 seat and guide machine a different way that makes more sense but I’m still to sort the spindle. Vacuum system still isn’t working correctly so I need to figure that out. The Serdi 2 valve grinder is actually more of a challenge with potentially more thing to sort. I get some of th...
First valve seat cut on the Serdi 3

First seats cut on the Serdi 3 seat and guide machine and it’s clear the machine needs more work as well as my procedure etc. Still waiting on all the new parts plus working out how to get everything balanced a d working as it should. I still need to order cutting tips as this is only a 45degree cutter. Still I’m working through things and starting to understand the machine more. If I had got a...

Honda Civic EG B20 Vtec Update 7 Almost Track Ready
Nice informative interview Ian, i am glad i use yourself for all my engine building as i know you never overlook anything and will refuse to use cheap part... would 100% recommend using Ian at IA motorsport
Did you get the machine to cut a better seat?
Currently around 1 thou run out but I haven’t yet tried to dial it in any more. I would say that for that genuine kind of accuracy you need to calibrate it for each head style I.e setup for a k series head and do as many as you can then setup for a different head. It’s not set it up and it’s good on all. As you change the matching height the balance of the spindle changes. I’ve also spent a serious amount of time doing run out tests and can see a number of errors that could be potential problems. The main one being the tapered pilot used. I’ve now done some measurements using a straight pilot (that binds in the guide) and it’s pretty interesting the differences…. More accurate. More videos coming. I can also say, having checked other machine shops works they aren’t anywhere near close to that.
Biggest problem is: front wheel driven car
🤣
It might be done properly but the chassis twisted? Look at most drift cars after a couple seasons. Bent to buggery but they still align and drive right.
I get ya, on the destruction of drift cars…in this case the parts have been installed incorrectly though. It would still drive fine for its usage as a road car but I’m going to correct the issue to make it right.
Should have done it urself
Customer carried out the work when he did the restoration but it’s all good. At least it was spotted.
how much you paid
For the Serdi 2 barely anything really. Obviously it needed a decent amount of work and parts. All up and running now though. Hopefully it continues to work as if the control unit dies it’s basically a paper weight.
@ if it dies let me know
Do you have spare parts or looking for them ?
@@IAMotorsport looking not selling, if you get tired of the valve seat machine let me know aswell
Put the balance weight on it , that stays on for all heads.
That Left Switch should be like the Right Switch , buy a new operator for that switch.
All the parts were on order I just needed to play with the machine 😬
What happen when Valve guide wear?ratlle sound?
Usually the engine will burn oil due to the valve moving on the valve stem seal. It’s also possible the valve head can break off due to constant miss alignment to the seat. Seen on many Hondas where people like to blame valve manufactures instead. Even new guides installed / machined badly can have all kinds of tapers etc.
How did they get past their quality tests . I see it was night shift work . And they slip all the poo through .
It’s honestly more common than you think. On the upside we now have the tools to measure and improve this.
Ball joints not suspension
@@ChrisDuch nope it’s the suspension damper (coil over), the lower “cup” locking collars were loose. 👍
No fuel pressure... removed the fuel filter and solved that. LEGEND
Parts here yet 😅
Good to see its all coming together Ian.
Slowly but surely still a way to go but it’ll be good in the end.
Lets play a drinking game..... every time you day OBVIOUSLY we have to take a shot!
😂
Don’t you have rags or tape in your shop
I prefer shop rags😅 but this is dope
Holy shit. Double mine 😂
She certainly strong.
Looks like you have a lot of work cut out for you.
Glad you got your new machines but that was some very careless moving! Long boom, sky high over a car. What could go wrong?😑
What a sloppy careless f'ing equipment delivery crane operator. The first thing he should have done after lifting that lathe load was to have shortened the boom to improve safety. Then he slaps the dang door. Report that guy. He's careless and dangerous.
Never lift from spindle omg ????
Lower the lathe never bring a machine that high up omg
The first thing you need to do is get your money back from the moron machinery rigger who thought it was ok to lift a lathe from the spindle. You never ever, ever, ever, ever do that!! You also never ever, ever, ever grab decking machine up top like that. You can’t have all that weight unsupported at the bottom. You can’t hire amateurs….what a catastrophe…
Local machinery mover 🤷🏻♂️. Hopefully it hasn’t caused any issues going forward, but what’s done is done can’t change that now.
Ahh, the anxiety of watching that!
lifting from the spindle.... ...
Yea they tried to lift it elsewhere but there was too much weight in the headstock. It did also have a strap going to the tail stock or close too to help balance it. Apparently they lift most of them like that 🤷🏻♂️
@@IAMotorsportIs that what he told you? That’s how they do it all the time? A tailstock and spindle aren’t made for that…that rigger is a joker and knows nothing about moving equipment. Get your money back
Unfortunately what’s done is done, clearly as you say not educated in his job or too lazy to do it right.
was more fun moving them into the machine room
And I appreciate your help 😬
What is the red machine
@@claytonshipp3367 it’s a seat and guide machine for cutting valve seats. Eg a 5 angle valve seat. There is also a valve refacing machine in the van. Can’t wait to get them up and running.
😂😂😂
I know that connecting rod fastener better than you could ever know. Take multiple measurements along the length and rotate 90° at all points and post the results. Did you verify your micrometer with a set of gauge blocks within that range?
Cool story bro!
Z20 power
Interference engine?
@@ROSS4422 😂
Did you forget a stick of dynamite in the cylinder 💀
I think misfire
I didn’t give many details but it’s a stock compression honda k series so the specific power is pretty low. 240hp ish give or take.
@@IAMotorsport lol i just took a wild guess i don't know too much about engines
@@IAMotorsport Cracked insulator. Also malfunctioning cooling system.
Sell the caps....
That's crazy. How has the end been cut off? Any special tools required? Love to know more
They machine the orifice plate off in a lathe most of the time. It’s micro welded on as standard .
Someone deserves a dry slap for pulling that one.
30mm spacers 😂
Idiot should’ve just got extended lug nuts 😂
Love it, would love one of these in the future
Least they was consistent with the installation🫣
They used to be everywhere 😅
Didn’t they just! Only see them on track now days. All the hot hatches have faded away.
Whaaaaat 😅
Dude there is so much more to come on this one car. 🤣 problem after problem.
@@IAMotorsport intriged haha 😅
Wouldn't trust the company / garage that built it that's now dissolved, looks like its now running a more track friendly spooly turbo
It was sold as is with 788hp and no changes since making that number. So here lies the problem.
It was 788 before they took off the 65mm turbo
What 65mm turbo do you think was on there ?
Garret
@@AlvizoFishin 🤣
Flywheel horsepower huh. Interesting. When you need to make your weenie feel bigger and hope nobody notices.

100% that’s not an s14 🤣 I’ll get that sorted 👍

Ps no saying cars shit just sounds lame 😒 love it btw
