for a 5 minute video i would recommend filming in landscape. thank you for sharing your HAOS migration!
Brilliant!!
I had a set of gaskets delivered with my s10. You just need to use them
As did I, just the instructions I followed made no mention of them (I also do try that mid way through 👍)

I’ve got this working, but it runs globally. Is there a way to have the automation only run when the Movie Time scene is running?
Only by including something in the scene that is only on/off when the scene is active. Then you can check that device’s state in the automation (could even be a very specific light brightness that you check).
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs can this be done natively in the Home app or will it need to be done in Homebridge or a 3rd party app? I have some spare smart plugs that are not being used for that purpose.
@@bungeholegymtestkitchen9888 you can go either way. Either use a spare plug as a “movie time” switch to check in the automation or start creating virtual switches in HomeBridge. And you can check the switch in a shortcut style automation then with an IF action wrapped around the whole thing, or put it before and Stop This Shortcut if the switch is on.
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs okay, I’ll try it out. For some reason I’ve been really struggling to figure out shortcuts.
@@bungeholegymtestkitchen9888 there’s a definite learning curve to it.
How did you Configure Home Assistant?
I set it up using the Matter integration (which is not easy in itself) so it only exposes the same switch as in the video, So just basic on/off control to clean everywhere. If you're interested in adding Matter devices to HA check out a video I made going through the hurdles I faced getting it setup: ua-cam.com/video/Ink2kFRZPhs/v-deo.htmlsi=w6U6FcHPrab2o5wW Hope this helps 👍
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs Thank you! You also mentioned in the video, that you connected it to HA before the Matter integration was available or did I get that wrong? :)
Ah yes it wasn’t exactly “connected” actually, I enabled the IFTTT integration and setup and applet to trigger it to clean everywhere and triggered that from HA.
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs Thank you!
I got xx77 on 3 of 5-6 Sensors. From other updates I know that it can take several days (last time I waited almost 2 weeks) for some of the sensors to get the new update. Btw. I did not like the video much, because the relevant information is missing.

Wow, that’s amazing. Is that thing mains wired or battery? Does it need a separate hub from HomeKit?
The Aqara cube is battery powered so you can leave it on your table or perform gestures from just about anywhere in your home. And it’s Zigbee connected so requires one of their hubs which all support Apple Home 👍
Crazy
I managed to get it working, by removing and adding the sensor again. However, the problem I have is this. The motion sensor is in the living room and when we are watching TV and we are obviously, quite still the lights go out. To fix this I added to the automation if TV is ON, stop shortcut. The TV is plugged in to a smart plug called TV. However, when the TV is switched on the lights still go out? Can anyone help please, this is driving me crazy!
May need to post a screenshot of your automation. Also longer term I highly recommend the Aqara FP2 presence sensor for rooms where you sit very still for long periods of time. Link to them is on my website, I have them in my lounge/kitchen/bathroom 👌

For some reason this isn’t working for me. I have an Apple 4K TV and using IPhone 15pro with latest IOS. No idea why it wouldn’t work? Any ideas?
You couldn't condense some of your automations into a single automation?
I definitely thought about this, but ultimately that would only buy me more time, and cost me in real world use. As the best way to condense many of them would be to convert to shortcut and they run a fair bit slower, especially the more complex they get.
Hi. Can you operate it when you're not near your house via WiFi on your phone?
Yeah assuming you mean the SwitchBots, you can as long as you have one of their hubs. Links to all are on my website. (their Hub 2 supports Matter so can be linked to any major smart home ecosystem)
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs awesome thanks 👍

Flawless thanks 🙏🏻
What happens if I don’t use repeat?
Then you are only checking at the end of the timeout, not that there has been no motion throughout. So someone moving in the interim will not break the timeout.
I suggest that closing your door should put down the expecting a delivery flag and lock the door, instead of after 90 seconds. Also, how did you do this?
Not a bad idea, will have to see if I get a reliable trigger for “door closed” from the lock 🤔 I’m using Home Assistant for this particular automation, as I wanted the sign to switch as quick as possible. So when “visitor turned on” it sends a message via MQTT to the sign we built to change its message and unlock the door, then after a few more seconds it updates again with another message and then waits 90 seconds to re-lock.
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs anyway to do it without Home Assistant? I do have Homebridge set up.
@@Techlifeandmore Yeah you could achieve the same thing (if you can get a sign that supports it) using web hooks in a Shortcut style automation all within HomeKit. I did have it setup this way, but HA was just quicker to get the sign to show what I needed as quick as possible from the moment the doorbell was pressed, before the courier misses it.
How did you accomplish this integration? Would love to learn more.
I’m using home assistant for this particular automation. I’ve given a basic overview in my comment below. But I may make a longer form video explaining it soon 👍
I have yet to get this plug in to work correctly. Every time I click those links in the config it just times out.
To be honest I did have similar trouble, as I was trying to setup 3 different TVs across my home. So kept having to restart the plugin (which I made a child bridge) in order to get it to re-initialise the links each time, and then had to be quite quick to get one done and repeat the process.
I watched that video too and when he said home assistant that was it for me. I’m not prepared to invest the time in that rabbit hole. But this sounds like a great work around. 👍
Yeah especially if you are already down the HomeBridge rabbit hole, this makes it super easy to find your TVs and expose actually useful switches/sensors for controlling and automating based on what your ATV is doing.
I’m having an issue with getting the shortcuts to kick me out of the app if I didn’t wait enough time before using the app again. I’ve done all the steps in the video as well as reinstalled the shortcuts. For now the shortcuts just record the time.
You will need to ensure your device is up to date in order to support the action which kicks you out. You might also need to check Settings > Shortcuts > Advanced and enable "Delete Without Confirmation" when it prompts you to delete a file.
Hi really love your work, and in fact tested few of them. One Automation I am looking for but have no luck so far. What I want In Apple Shortcuts first 2 Verifications 1st I am connected to a particular Bluetooth device, 2nd I am at a specific location then run a shortcut. For example it should test If I am connected to a specific car, near my home then open the Garage. Currently Apple Automation in Shortcuts only Allow 1 verification, I can Either test if I am connected to a specific device then run shortcut or it allows only to verify when I Arrive home then run shortcut, how to merge both and run the shortcut please help.
I may follow up with a video on this. But for now what you will need to do is pick one of those trigger, and then manually check the other within the Shortcut. In the scenario you described (assuming you are still connected to your wifi when you get in the car) I would make the automation trigger on bluetooth connection to the car, then in the Shortcut run Get Network Name and check if it is the same as your home wifi and if so continue to do what you want. This is a MUCH quicker way of checking you are home than using Location checks.
Thank you. I know more now, but need to rewatch as you covered a lot of information :)
Glad it was helpful! Be sure to subscribe for future helpful videos :)
I just did something similar for my Aqara fp2 presence sensor. But started with the 300 second wait, no repeat, then If presence detected is yes, stop shortcut, else turn off lights. Brilliant! Been trying to figure this out forever.
Yeah I had the same thing, took me a long time to work out that I need to repeat and check in order to avoid a situation where you come and go in and out and then the lights turn off really quickly after leaving near the end of the initial timer (or have multiple effectively running the bg resulting in really weird behaviours). But not as big of an issue on the FP2 since it doesn’t need a timeout the same way motion sensors do 👍
I do not get why Apple make it so complicated to do this, but am so grateful that kind people like you exist
Glad to be of help. Definitely more useful tips to come so be sure to subscribe.
thank you so much for this. I have been faffing with home assistant and although i had a working automation, every core update the zigbee response time goes to hell. fed up with it. native homekit is snappy so this is great. thanks!

Glad to be of help :)
I can get this to work with my hue sensor any ideas why?
I originally used this trick with a Hue sensor, it should work with any as I now use it with several different Aqara ones. I would recommend checking your wait time is slightly longer than the hue sensor timeout (probably 30s) and ensure you have all the actions in the correct places.
thx! you saved me form returning the Eve sensors back to Apple :)
Glad I could help :) Out of interest, what was your issue with the Eve sensors? They are actually one of the few you usually might not always need this method for, as they have lots of configurable timeout options (although I still do with mine).
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIsthe same issue, there is no option to switch off the light after N minutes of inactivity. Tried the Home app and Eve's app, no luck. your approach helped.
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs eve mention suck the automation never turns off bulb
@@Viewer765 do they turn the lights on ok?
Promo sm 😒
I hate the complexity. Why on earth can I tell my lights to come on when motion is detected but can't tell my lights to turn off if motion is not detected? Bizarre
I totally agree, it's a huge oversight not to have a simpler option for this sort of thing. But at least once you understand this technique you can do more interesting things with it. Like have a 2 tier timeout, where after 2 minutes the lights dim to warn anyone in the room that they are about to turn off, then if they move it turns them back up, otherwise 10 seconds later if there is still no motion turn them off.
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs Ooo I like that too. Do that video for us? But, I've copied IF statements before exactly and they often do not execute as expected. I usually end up truncating it so that part of it runs. Another challenge I have is writing script for running two IF conditions. E.g. If there's no motion (for x time) and If the door is open, then turn off light.
I use some of these conditions in my bathroom, so I'll try and make a video on it soon :) Until then, it might help you to know that within the loop, I check each different device one after the other NOT nested within each other and that seems to work for me.
thank you so much!
This is exactly what I have been looking for. Now I can turn on the light with the Hue switch in the kitchen during the day when I need extra light and the light turns off automatically when I leave after X minutes. Thank you so much .
Glad I could help, feel free to subscribe to see more useful HomeKit tips in the future :)
Awesome! You saved me lots or trouble Cheers!
thanks. how would I add a condition where if a door is closed (I have a door contact sensor installed), don't turn off the lights. otherwise, I want to keep the same set up as you did above.
Good question, you can add another IF action as we have put in the loop. It depends at what point you want to check for the door being closed. I would suggest at the end of the timeout most likely. So drop it in at the end and put your final action to turn off the lights within the new IF, then tap the IF condition and select Home Accessory, select the contact sensor, and change contact sensor state to Open, so that it only turns off the lights if the door is still open. Hope this helps!
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs thank you so much. I will try that later tonight. Just curious what's the difference between the way you have shown in the video vs just doing the automation with let say "turn off" after like 60 seconds, 1 or 3min, etc.
The issue with that is that it's not tied to the event that triggered it, like motion. So new motion does not reset that timer. For example if you have a 1m timeout and go into a room and then sit still for 50 seconds, then move it will still turn the lights off at the defined 1m. Whereas the loop above will detect that new motion event and cancel the loop until there's no motion again for a long enough time to finally turn them off.
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs gotcha, not sure apple has updated the system but in my office, I have the "turn off" set to 5min for my motion sensor and if it detects any motion within that 5min, it resets the timer. I added another "if" to work with the door sensor and it works great. thanks again
No problem, that is weird though whenever I've tried it it's behaved as I described, perhaps I need to do more testing with newer updates. You do get much greater flexibility though as you've seen with your example, I personally have a check at the end of my loop which checks a contact sensor on my shower door so the lights don't turn off when someone is in there as the motion sensor won't detect someone through the door.
Strange, the trigger that must stop the flow when new motion is detected doesn’t work (Aqara FP2) Latest iOS and tvOS, any idea? I have setup exact the same rule
Strange, I got an FP2 myself last week and I'm using the same trick with it for timeouts on various automations just fine. Are you able to post some sort of link to a screenshot of the entire automation so I can take a look? My best guest would be your repeat frequency is too short, I have noticed that when I went below about 5 seconds for the Wait action within the Repeat, the automation would sometimes just break and my light would never turn off.
All my messages with urls or e-mailadressen are deleted
Can you maybe add me on Facebook so I can sent you the HomeKit flow?
I only have Twitter, you can message me @HowToHomeKit
@@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs curious what numbers you use for the FP2 as it's timeout seems pretty fast?
I want my exhaust fan to shut off when the humidity drops below 55. I’m using a HomePod mini humidity sensor and the fan in on a lutron caseta switch. Would I follow the same process as shown here. Thanks
Sounds like what you want is much simpler. Just go into the Home app and tap the + to create an automation, select the HomePod mini humidity sensor then "Drops Below" and set it to 55% and it should move onto what you want to control. Select your fan and tell it to turn off and you're all done.
Thanks for the video! Could you please explain what's the # before the wait action? Would it be the same if I just do repeat 3 times -> wait 20 seconds instead?
Not sure if I made it clear enough in the video, but that's purely a shorthand to save you from pressing the + button 20 times to get a 20 second wait. So if you want you can just do what you said and hit + on the Wait action to get it to 20s and skip the # Number action 👍
Oh like a variable! Nice!
Thanks. Works like a charm
