Though I spent much more time explaining my disagreements, I do wanna mention I agreed a lot with what you and Cenk are saying is true. The American left is so fragmented right now in part because it is pretentious and often elitist. Pushing people out who don’t agree with you on one particular subject isn’t a good way to get your message across or get people to be sympathetic to it.

6:59 I absolutely don’t agree based on what Trump has said. When Trump was talking about “the enemy from within” during this last campaign, for example, he wasn’t talking about establishment republicans: he was talking about establishment (and arguably normal) democrats. He doesn’t whip out the McCarthy handbook of rousing Rightist sentiment by calling republicans communists; that is reserved for anyone left of center. I don’t think he has “defeated” the establishment right, I think he has absorbed most of it and spit out the stragglers who didn’t kiss the ring. Look at some of his most ardent supporters: Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, JD Vance (less establishment than others, but still). All of these guys and more were once outspoken critics, but have since realized they were no match for his charisma, brazenness, or simplicity, and chose to get on his bandwagon. I won’t pretend to know for sure why they all had such changes of heart, but the fact remains that now, not supporting Trump on basically every issue makes one a RINO.

4:33 if one defines “cult” something like “a group of people who zealously follow an extreme, charismatic leader that encourages their followers to abandon previous beliefs, uncritically accept doctrine, tolerate or don’t acknowledge lies, cut off outside influences, give money to the leader’s cause, etc.” then it’s arguable that the most devout supporters of politicians, including Trump/MAGA, can be included. The numerous examples of lumping Trump in with Christianity has certainly elevated him to a level vanishingly few politicians have ever reached in American politics. Couple that with the cultivation of anti-intellectual sentiments or outright science denial, and you arguably have the makings of a pseudo-cultish following. The closest thing the American left had to Trump, in my opinion, was Bernie, and they didn’t storm the capital when the DNC shafted him out of the nomination, or insist for years afterward that Bernie actually won the nomination (a few may have done this, but is probably far from normal.) You could basically make this argument for “wokeness” too.

I watched the whole podcast with Cenk and honestly was great. I totally agree with you, and I'm on the far left, I just don't get how they don't see this in themselves. I was raised conservative and grew out of it and maybe it aloows me to have a different perspective. I Love what Cenk is doing and it makes me sad he's getting hate for it, thanks for doing this!!

Two points that are worth noting. 1) if the electorate "on the other side" wants the same things you do in some areas you can work with them on that. 2) "MAGA" really hasn't demonstrated that they actually want to cut government spending, the pentagon, ect. The worlds richest man who got there through government financing of his businesses straight up publicly bought his way into the inner circle. If you believe him that he wants to actually cut government graft rather than gut government spending on *YOU* ? Then you've got problems. Figures adjacent to him are already talking about gutting the VA and other things farther. We have this collective amnesia. Starting in the late 70s due to a international crisis (vietnam war, oil crisis and collapse of bretton woods because nixon wouldn't renegotiate it) the economy had experienced a decade of shambles. The forces we now call neoliberalism blamed this on "inefficient strangling government" as well as basically... people being paid too much... So for forty years we have used government inefficiency as an excuse to gut the government. This cuts talent out of government agencies making it MORE inefficient which justifies the next wave of gutting. "DOGE" is the same thing. It's using the problems caused by the previous wave of gutting to justify the new wave of selective gutting to benefit Musk and men like him. Remember, a businessman who benefits from poisoning rivers and injured workers will not share his wealth. He will not pay his workers more because the point is to make money, not spend it.

You can see the faces of the PBD guys like "yeah whatever." They are capital owners. They are, especially PBD, a part of the ruling class. Cenk is ahead of where people are but you see it slowly inching that way with the CEO getting put down. Economic populism is what does need to happen and be surrounded. Thing is I think a lot of Trump supporters will bee disappointed but that has to play out and possibly in bad ways. Then we shall see if Cenk's meessage resonates with people.
