Fortnite Chapter 1 OG on a 1980s green screen monitor
Fortnite has thrown-back to Chapter 1 Season 1. I've gone further back in time, playing on a small 1980s Apple IIc green screen CRT. I try out OG Builds and OG Zero Builds. Will my ability to game get worse or improve? The game's pallet is mostly green anyway.
Got another game you want me to play in green? Or a retro/modern hardware/game pairing you want me to try? Please let me know in the comments.
I play a variety of games (on regular monitors) up on:

    A few of my favorites : Turrican II, Marble Madness, International Karate, Lotus III, Ghouls n ghosts, Indy 500, Pang, Silworm, Swiv, Stunt Car Racer. On a 500 I wouldn't consider an accellerator. On a 1200 where you run everything in WHDLoad, yes.

    I upgraded my Amiga 500 with an ACA-500plus a year after I got it in 2019. I don't play many games on mine, it's more of a glorified typewriter and it runs Deluxe Paint IV at double speed. I'm still figuring out how I can use the creativity software and the resulting files with my modern computer in a modern context. It can be a fun experiment to try out what (from all the advertised possibilities promised in those 80s ads) one still can do with an Amiga.

    for convenience an accelerator with ide connector is a good upgrade. An 030 with some extra memory is all you need and they are very compatible. I don't think you can hdd boot from stock 1.3 roms howerver so the rom chip needs upgrading unless the accelerator has a map rom feature. It's a good idea to map rom anyways since ram is faster than rom. Then you need an ide to CF adapter and a CF card, or a CF to SD adapter instead of CF card. The point of this is to run Workbench of the CF card, and use WHDload games launching them using a launcher such as igame or any of the other available. WHDload requires extra fast ram that you would get from the accelerator so it won't run on a stock a500. It's also a lot of fun tinkering and personalise Workbench to have the perfect gaming setup :)

    • @Kman_aus
      @Kman_aus Місяць тому

      Yeah would be fun having a tinker with Workbench. I've only ever seen it on others' computers. And the convenience of having the games on a CF/SD card. Thanks for the advice and the tip about the map ROM feature.

    For compatibility I ended up ditching all my accelerators and keeping my Amiga 500 with 1mb chip ram 1.5mb slow ram and a Gotek drive, near to stock keeping the 1.3 rom, if I want anything more I use emulation with coffin or caffeine os.

    • @Kman_aus
      @Kman_aus Місяць тому

      Interesting, a bit of different upgrade route that would keep the machine closer to stock. How much of an improvement does that RAM configuration make? Sounds like being able to switch an accelerator on/off might be handy? (if possible)

    • @Kirk-7
      @Kirk-7 Місяць тому

      @ Some games or demos need 1mb chip others need slow ram expansion, hence I use a 2mb boobip expansion to cover each scenario giving the extra .5 mb chip and 1.5mb other, I remember fitting a switch on my original Amiga 500 to swap the expansion memory between chip and slow which is an easier option.

    Yes, get an accelerator that will let you use a CF or SD card as a hard drive. You can load that up with WHDLoad and have almost all the Amiga games ever put out at your fingertips. You don't need a 68060 accelerator to play games, a 68030 with 8 MB of fast ram will play nearly anything adequately. I went from an Atari 800 to a used Amiga 500. From there I got a 2000HD, 3000 desktop, two A4000 desktops with accelerators and finally an A4000T with an 060/PPC and Cybervision with a big monitor. It all started with the lowly 500 with 512k to play some games, but the bug had bitten hard. Started a BBS, did desktop publishing on the 3000, added more phone lines to the BBS and after having 20 phone lines and modems hanging off of an Amiga 4000/060 I ended up starting an ISP business. The Amiga 500 totally changed my life. I still have it. I need to see if I can get it running again.

    • @Kman_aus
      @Kman_aus Місяць тому

      Thanks for the advice, good to know. It'd be nice to have the games easy to load and running smoother. That's cool where owning an Amiga 500 lead you. How many of the Amigas do you still have and use?

    • @cp256
      @cp256 Місяць тому

      I still have them all except for the 2000, but I also have another 500 and a 1200 that were given to me by a friend. The 1200 and a 4000 desktop work and have been outfitted with Compact Flash drives and the 4000 has a Gotek drive and a quad ROM switcher I built. The 3000 and 4000T are both in good condition and may work without doing much to them I think the two 500s are in decent shape, but need work and the other 4000's motherboard is in rough shape, but I have another original 4000 motherboard from 1993 kicking around here somewhere so that might have a new life at some point as well.

    I just got mine today, and I'm a bit disappointed, the image wasn't as sharp as what I was hoping for, I thought it'd look just as good as using traditional hdmi on a modern console but no. I use rgb scart for all my retro consoles, and I tried out my og xbox, while the image was alot cleaner, it was still blurry, didn't seem all too different to just using rgb scart normally on my hdtv. Maybe I'm missing something here, or a hidden setting, I hope so, because what a paid doesn't feel worth it right now.

    • @Kman_aus
      @Kman_aus 24 дні тому

      Thanks for letting us know. Yeah it’s kind of limited by the video the console outputs. You do get some advantages with the OSSC, but I think the comparison varies with how good your TV was at upscaling and zero lag…. RetroRGB has some good videos on the OSSC (and others) where he goes deeper into the functions and which device is best for what use case.

      Didnt really take off here at all, but extremely popular in Japan - for Japan it was the PC standard before the IBM PC becoming dominant in the early/mid 90's. And it was responsible for killing off a lot of the less popular 8 bit designs in Japan (i.e. as a broad brush statement if you werent one of the big players - eg. NEC, Sharp and Fuj - you eventually folded and switched to an MSX design by the mid-80's). MSX did have some minor success in Europe, and also in Brazil, but the standard was largely invisible in Australia / England / US. Its actually a pretty capable platform with a lot of software (particularly on MSX2) still worth looking at today.
