Dagger Rewind: how does it stack up to the Pyranha Ripper?
Good stuff, Matt. First came across your Madagascar expedition videos, I think. Some proper Chompinators there!
Thank you for covering the topic Matt. I have been around watching your videos since the tutorial on cartwheels, I think. Have a great start to your week!
Loving this one pal. This is such an important point to share. I see a lot of paddlers for whom mindset work is all about understanding and managing anxieties, with too little discussion about building resilience.
Thanks Jamie. Yeah, I think it is a missing link for so many people, particularly that "I can't..." mindset.
I still think that your fight in that hole should have made you the technical winner of the Green Race that year!
Too kind. A cheer at the after-party was enough for me!
I really like the example of mental fortitude you gave; when your note paper blew into the water and you kept going.
I wondered if anyone would comment on that! 😅
We I think you had about 500 subscribers when I started watching your videos and I all ways liked the skill building ones and the breakdown of moves
That must be within the first few months of the channel existing! Awesome! Thanks for your support. And don't worry - there are more move breakdowns on the way!
I honestly thought there would be a plot twist at the end. But thanks for the informative advice.
I usually try to keep things informative..though maybe some comedic skits would go down well!
Mine was 'How to style out stern pirouettes' in Dec 2021 (according to my youtube history). Your vids are a regular watch (and recommendation to others) a good variety of tips, tutorials and vlogs - informative, helpful and fun.
Wow! Another long-time viewer! Thank you for your support.
„How to stern stall ( a verticality deep dive )” that was my first video I watched. After first session with your coaching at Woodmill last time, I’m looking forward for next session this time on the river. By the way great videos for white water kayaking. Keep going Matthew 💪🏼
Thanks! A few years of following then. Yes, definitely looking forward to the upcoming coaching!
First video I ever watched, how to back deck roll. I have not attempted the back deck role as I’m still trying to polish up the C roll but I will get there. Your videos are very helpful and confidence boosting. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Glad to have provided some useful stuff!
River dart Video was my First one
Thanks for sharing! It's just interesting to see how long people have been following for.
No es la nave es el piloto 🎉
A menudo es el río!
I'm pretty sure I have watched since the first video. Really enjoy the ones going down a river
Thanks Kev! Yes, I expect you're one of the longest-standing viewers!
Petition to ensure each video from now on has a skit at the start ✅
I was considering it! 😅
Agreed. Well, maybe not every video, but it's a solid bit.
I want to be like you when I grow up 🤘
Thanks man! That's too kind!
The good thing about this is that if you fail you are already in the perfect rolling position 😂
Also very true! 😅
As someone who came across this short with no prior knowledge of kayaking why is holding an edge good? Are these techniques to train in calm water that better help navigation of rapids and stronger currents?
@@codyklotko5213 spot on! This is a drill to enable whitewater paddlers to keep greater control when they get caught out in a river feature and need to stay upright. Thanks for the comment; many wouldn't have bothered to be curious! I hope you give it a try one day.
Aw hell yeah! Gotta try that sometime
Such a fun move to play with.
Just a little kiss on the rock, you killed it!
Thanks. Looking forward to getting back in there this winter!
Sweet move
Thanks. It's a fun one, for sure!
Agreed, very cool. Having a hard time wrapping my head around this move. Matthew, would you mind breaking this move down into steps? Looks like stern’s upstream edge is up , in power position, and modified bow draw with open faced blade while on the eddy line…(?)
Thanks. I have a tutorial on this move right here: ua-cam.com/video/_wm8UYZ1-HE/v-deo.html
Digging that stern entry, dope!!
It's a definite favourite!
Looking good there dude!
Cheers man! Gotta get you back on the river!
Ooph, style for miles! Your squirting games is waaaaay up there dude 👌
That's too kind! I'm just out here having fun.
@@MatthewBrookKayaking and it looks like it! Makes me itch to go paddling!
Did you used to have a blue Dagger RPM ?
I used to have a beautiful raspberry ripple RPM, but not a blue one.
So smooth, love your style.
Thanks Dan. I just really like slicing! And, of course, this video doesn't show the hundreds of flops that led to this point! 😂
Very cool. What boat you in?
Thanks. This is my wife's small Rewind. It slices very nicely!
@ thought was a rewind but want 100%
To mogu čak i ja
That's awesome man! Well done.
That was helpfull! I did the one where you throw the paddle in first and roll over your hands but next summer I will try to do this move. This is similar to a freewheel no?
No problem. Yes, it's somewhat similar to a reverse freewheel - a cross between that and a helix. Emphasis on tucking the body forwards.
When you backwards paddle into the feature and initiate a splat:pirouette are you basically just putting the blade behind you and edging away from it?
It's a sort-of cross-stern initiation. Works in most steep holes: essentially just edging and allowing the stern to rotate and slice under with the seam. The paddle stroke is more for guidance than anything else.
@ might have to give that a try when I paddle tomorrow
Back surf really good test of awareness on the wave
So true!
Love your posts. Are you in an ozone?
Thanks. I'm in a Dagger Rewind in this one.
You'll be in a minority at Hurley then; nearly everyone there only ever goes left! A tip: on 3 gates and also on two, the first gate forms a super-retentive cartwheeling pocket for going left just on the seam behind the stantion. It's difficult to describe, but when you find it it's retentive as anything. That's going to be the easiest spot for getting your left hand going and getting everything lined up properly. Also, if you cross into the middle gate fairly high on the pile, then immediately cut back onto your right edge to bounce off the shoulder into a left blunt it generates loooads of pop. Your roundhouses/blunts are nice and smooth, but I think you're setting up a bit too low on the wave, a little too close to the centre and end up throwing a bit too low in the trough, so they're a bit flat. Setting up higher and a smidgen further out to the side and you can generate more upstream speed and more pop off your edge transition so the bow has more air to drop into and make your blunt steeper. You can afford to be quite aggressive with it.
Thank you. A wealth of helpful advice! I'll do my best to put this into practice.
Are these courses more based towards beginners or more advanced?
These are clinics, so there will be a range of folks there. If you already have some freestyle skills, we can build on them; if you are just starting out, we can work with that too! 😁
Nice, as a SuperNova paddler it’s great to see how you manage the slice boat 🤙
Glad to help! I love the satisfaction of throwing around a longer boat.
Wish I lived in the UK to get lessons haha
That's humbling! Thanks for your support!
Love the paddle
@@thaddeusleclair2141 yeah, it's a beaut. Nothing quite like wood!
@@MatthewBrookKayaking there was a US paddler around the early to mid 2000s called Dustin Urban who used to use a Jim Snyder wooden paddle. Met him on the Ottawa in about 2007. He had a dog called Hurley! Coincidence? Errr... well, yes, obviously...
I mean... I say "there was", as far as I'm aware he's not dead or anything...
Great stuff, this is why playboating is such a game changer, you can have a great time on the most marginal of features
Absolutely! Playboating is one of the best things you can do for your overall enjoyment of the sport!
Im still at the basics. But to give myself some accountability: I want to have a roll on both sides, be able to flat spin/surf at more angles, and to be surfing bigger downstream waves. Most of this is just comfort on waves that will come with practice, hopefully. Great idea for a video series, though. I look forward to checking in.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing Jamie. Keep me posted on how you progress!
Who makes your paddle?
@@AndrewCline-c9b it's a RivrStyx paddle, made by Jim Snyder in the US.
Your content is really good. Fix the thumbnail for this video - I almost didn't click on it cuz your shoulders are badly exposed in that moment and I don't like to watch bad boating. Turns out your boating is pretty good. I'm trying to improve my blunts so I'll keep watching. Have a fun winter season!
@@youreabadcat glad to have made the cut! The thumbnails are just auto-selected by UA-cam, and to be honest, I think it highlights precisely the benchmark I'm talking about in the video, i.e. working the RH shoulder, but not utilising my LH blade. But I see your point, the angle in that moment definitely makes my shoulders look quite high.
I’m trying to learn how to double pump without a paddle. But, I’m struggling to do it. My lean clean is not great, worth starting it from that?
That's awesome. Yes, 100% - a solid lean clean will open the way to paddle-less cartwheels.
Did you get that paddle in the south east? Always wondered
Not while I was there, but it was made by Jim Snyder over in the States, yes.
So sick! I nearly got one this summer while i was there but had no possibilty to get one home. Beautiful handcraft
@gregorschmidt5316 yeah, they are just stunning!
Great Video I’m about to hit Columbus for the first time Sunday and I never really tried to throw wave tricks got any tips for blunts and air screws?
Thanks. That's awesome man. Have fun. Best advice I can give for making any tricks work is focus on the basics first - get really comfortable moving up the pile using the shoulders etc.
Get a firecracker for river play, and a creeker for creeking
If that's what floats your boat, sure!
Any plans to do any coaching sessions at Hurley? 🙂
Feel free to drop me an email and we can chat.
Great video! I’m going to have to book another session with you and bring my super nova along to get some tips for super-slicey fun! 🙂
Thanks! Absolutely, please do. Next one is on the 9th of November.
Looks like you’re loving the dagger . It’s awesome boat are you in the nova or super nova ?
It's a Nova and yes, I love it! Great bit of boat design!
