The Mud Bug Lure - This Crazy Looking Crustacean Catches Fish!
Nice instructional. Those look great and I like the packaging design too. I really like the “Spirit of 76” idea and theme. I make, modify and restore my own spinnerbaits too and you’ve inspired me to do some in those colors. I’m going to paint some blades in fluorescent blue, lime green and blaze orange, maybe fire red. Give the bass something a bit different to look at other than brightly polished blades.
I agree! I love giving new life to old spinners and trying crazy colors. You just never know what a Bass is going to go for.
Great demonstration I will definitely start making some xtra large ones, thanks!
I love your channel and content. Bring back the Chuck Mangione intro though!
Rad
I have multiple of these from over the years what amazes me is just thing the amount of paper was used in all those over the years
Thanks for the video. In March, my wife and I are attending Sowbug and plan to fish on the White River.
I have a few of these that my grandpa left me. Pretty neat! Great video!
One of my more memorable fishing days was fishing on the Mighty Ottawa River in Ontario just below the old log chute, and wading onto a ledge in 1' of water, noticing a ball of shinners stacked up in the shallow water, as walked towards shinners a few swam off the ledge into the deep river water only to be met with an explosion from below! It turned out that a pack of Smallies had been feeding on the shinners and their only hope was to stay on the ledge until the feeding frenzy ended! I had an ultra light 5' 6" SouthBend eglass spinning rod, Garcia 3800 spinning reel with 6lb test line and few lures, I had a 1/4 oz little O? N? in a brown perch pattern already tied on, I threw the lure into the deeper part of the river and cranked the reel once or twice? And almost had it taken out my hands! The Smallmouths hit that little O so hard I thought a different type of fish! With the little hooks and not being sharpened a lot of times the smallies would use the current to either bend the hooks or just explode into the air shaking that bait out! One time one pulled so hard the pressure on the line & bait, it popped loose flying out the water and burying itself in my cheek just below my eye! Never had a day like that again! The Little O, it's shape, square bill and movement in the river looks like a Crawfish/Minnow? Not sure but the fish just crushed it! That Shape and its tight swimming motion is a killer combination! One of my go-to baits especially in rivers with crawfish in it! I often wonder if that's what Mr. Young had in mind when designing the Lure? Heddon had made similar lures but not with that square bill! seemed to make the lure swim a tighter pattern! Fishing O's in the upper Potomac River in Maryland, fishing the areas where the rocks would trap sand and make sandbars and grass would grow along it! Smallies would smack the O, when thrown upstream and worked quickly down over the rocks, sand and grass early in the mornings grey light, even caught a flathead or two in the same areas! That bait swam on the bottom across the sand & rocks does look like a crawfish moving! Smallmouth loved the O's in 1/2 & 1/4 oz and in a river system will cover long distances the strike the O & the copy cat rebels in a crawfish pattern! But they seem to get hungup a lot more than the O's not sure why? Maybe the tighter wiggle? All these old baits still catch fish but aren't the new boys on the block and are forgotten in the tackle box in the Garage! Funny I now have 100's rods & reels and thousands of lures, two boats fresh & saltwater and a Kayak! But I now probably catch fewer fish! because I'm thinking what to use? Compared when I just had that Sourhbend spinning rod & Garcia 3800 Reel and a handful of lures walking or wading rivers banks & lakes shorelines! Go Figure? TMI! But I learned where the Big O name came from! Very Cool! Thanks
I love hearing these stories. Thank you writing in and sharing!
I like your channel and the history lessons from all these vintage lures. As a lure modeler and 3D lure printer, I appreciate the perfect side view and top view of the lure you presented. It allow me to take a screenshot and TRY to model it in CAD. Next time you’re on the water, two things I would really appreciate is a clear shot of how the lure sit in the water and a close shot of the lure action. A GoPro on a long stick will help achieve this. Sorry, this is a lot to ask. I understand that video editing takes a bulk of your time already.
Thank you for writing in. I generally try to show a water demo. Unfortunately all the water around me is currently froze over. Check out some of the other lure vids and you should see how the lures display/move in the water. Thanks again!
So in 78 guys would get snagged and scream, "that was a god damn $1.69 lure!!!!" 🤔😱😂
😂
Gene larew made chicken foot worm
I think that the Mann’s Fat Albert closely resembles the Big-O. There sure were a lot of similar lures out soon after the Big-O hit it big.
Yes, I forgot to mention the Fat Albert. Totally agree, very similar to the Big-O. I’d like to find and fish one of those.
God I love this channel. I’m 65 and this stuff takes me back like a Time Machine. BTW. That Rebel Super R was a killer on trophy smallmouths on Ozarks rivers.
Thank you!! Nostalgia is what it’s all about!
Awesome video, thanks!
Wish I had some. I love the older stuff
Amazing all the variations. And amazing that they pretty much all catch fish. Young hit on a near perfect design. Super fun going through all the catalog pages. Great episode!
Totally agreed! He knocked that design out of the park!
I fish with the Big Hedd from Heddon mostly! I do have a lot of the big o’s
I bought the egg crate package from Bass Pro in the 1970's as a Christmas present for my youngest brother . Fred Young used to ship his out in the crates for mail orders . My favorite alphabet lures were Bomber Model A and Fat A.
What an awesome gift for your brother!! I hope he still has it
Actually Fred’s brothers name was Otis not Odis. Otherwise excellent video. 🎣😎🎣
Thanks for watching and writing in. I questioned that too but went into the rabbit hole checking the name before making the video. I found his grave and obit that confirmed the name Odis. I can send you the link if you’d like to read it.
I apologize you are correct 🎣😎🎣
@@tomgibson649 There’s a few different spellings floating around online. I wanted to be sure I had the right one haha. Thanks again for writing in.
Have you ever seen a bobber lure
I know enough to be dangerous. That mudbug with stripes. It looked to be unstamped on belly. I couldn't tell. If it was unstamped, it quite possibly could be the earliest. Mudbug originated at Tru Shad Lure co. Sold to Arbo after 1964. Tru shads were not stamped.
Really! That would be awesome. I’ll have to take a second look. Thank you
@anglingarchaeology i live in Monroe La where bayou boogie and tru shad originated in the 50's and ended in 1964. A.D. Manufacturing Co. (Anthony Danna)
Just like many like minded fishers, me and my brothers would rip the covers off of these catalogs. Banjo Minnows anyone? Lol
Fisherman bait not fish bait.
Color is DC9. Dark Crawfish on Chartruese. 9 was the color code for chartruese for Bagley baits
I see two bill norman weed walkers
BASS PRO Niagara on the Lake still sells wiggle warts.
My favororite is the storm subwart 375 size
crazy, please more of such stuff
PS1🐟🎣😎
My dad still has the Ambassaduer 3500C and the Ambassaduer 5000C that he bought new back in 1987. They are going strong 38 years later and show no signs of breaking any time soon. We use them every year to catch striped bass and catfish and they have never failed us. He definitely made a good investment when he bought them. It's a damn shame Abu Garcia outsourced their manufacturing to China and their quality has gone to shit.
The year that i was born hahaha
13:30 Man those prices… rat-l traps for $3, now they are $7.18 on their site.
Bill Lewis got bought out by GSM and they outsourced their manufacturing to China. You can get rattle traps for $4 now.
Terrific ! Can not believe you past by the creek chub pikey , george perry's lure 😊
Comment
Yes a deep dive on the Speed Spool I still have one n.i.b. in box !!
What a great video!
idk why but i love bill dance
I have a couple Sonics but don't use them anymore for fear of loosing them.
37 years have passed, have the fish got smarter or the angler just more gullible ?
Your production value and video skills as a host are awesome, cant wait to see your channel grow!
And pretty sure the glare is a smudge on your camera lens.
Correction you can have upto 3 treble hooks on a hard bait. I think your thinking of baited hooks. In kansas Each angler is limited to two rods (three with three-pole permit) with no more than two baited hooks (single or treble) or artificial lures per line.
I’m liking the detailed BPS catalog walk throughs. Please keep them coming! You’ve got some impressive examples of era lures in their packaging in fantastic condition. Nice baseball cards too. I agree on the music in that era too. Great tunes. In the early 90’s I used to cruise in my 68 Firebird playing (among other things) that Van Halen debut album on my Apline cassette deck. Still have the cassette. Wish I still had the ‘Bird.
I own one of those tackle boxes. The one with the extra bottom. Perfect condition still. I don’t take out ever. It’s just too nice. I love these videos!
I'm sorry I threw mine out.
Another great video Mike! I have a Lews BB2N I purchased new in 87 along with a St Croix premiere graphite rod for $120.00 big ones. It was my musky bucktail rod. Still got it! Also love the George Brett card. Suddenly I have a hankering for some Red Man 😁. On another note, I gotta say I kinda miss the Chuck Mangione at the intro. 😞 Just sayin 🙂
Haha! Thank you. I miss the Mangione too. I just don’t have the copyright to it. I’ll work on getting another 70s inspired intro!
No worries, Chuck and I are tight. I’ll give him a call.😝
Great video. The artwork on those Quick reel pages is awesome - beautiful. Love the UMCO tackle boxes too. And Virgil Ward?! So cool, especially given my BFA repost on Virgil yesterday. Beautiful catalog.
Thanks man! I was making the video as I saw your post on Virgil Ward. Agreed, the early Bass Catalogs are a work of art.
Really loving your channel and history!
I’m still using three early 1980s version of the lews bb1ng baitcasting reels for crankbait fishing. Keep them maintained and they will last forever!
I just recently last summer found a 1984 bass pro mag! The prices were mind blowing lmao
