Okay that last one has a point
My mother, a videogame disliker (wouldn't say hater Honestly. She used to think DND was a videogame yes), not a fantasy fan, very much enjoyed this film. I say that's a success for a thing like this.
Naked Lunch is absolutely my number one. It is very ambiguous and intentionally unclear, but something that really benefits the viewing is doing some reading on the author William S. Burroughs. The film is semi autobiographical, and the book was considered to be impossible to adapt because it was basically incomprehensible in terms of how the book flows. The chapters are intentionally out of order, and the dude had a serious drug problem. It's less of a straight forward film and more of an out there character study on the author himself. 8/10 film for me
He made three of them. Based on books he himself wrote.
I can see why most people who just want to casually watch a good movie might hate it. But I really like movies you can think about for weeks after watching, get excited about the bold and unique delivery and style that nothing else offers. There are many horror and thriller movies I enjoyed more in the moment but Beau is afraid offers something more memorable and interesting in the long term. In a way I almost feel like part of an exclusive club that the producer was trying to reach over the average audience member. The same kind of people who Funny Games catered to, as a movie who's purpose was making a miserable and unsatisfying experience for the average viewer. I don't think Ari Aster was trying to make a hit movie. It was a passion project to be enjoyed by those as deeply invested in the same strange, niche genre as he is. And I loved it for that.
Ngl "Mother!" is actually one of my favorite films lmao
The haters who haven’t watched this movie should be strapped into a chair and forced to watch it.
I watched this movie after having spent two years running Rime of the Frostmaiden as my first ever game of dnd that lasted until completion in a very very long time. I started my players off at level 2 and sent them to Revel's End to participate in a prison break and be level 3 by the end of it. The plan was to climb up the tower and use a Feather Fall scroll to leap from the top, over the wall and to freedom. Imagine my surprise when this movie started up, imagine my Players' surprise! what i liked about this movie is that it felt like the highlights of someone's game, rather than being a movie based on dnd. And there were so many little things for players of the game to enjoy, like Zenk being an obvious DMPC.
I actually like tenet the concept is confuding but grear
I expected a more in-depth and detailed video review.
Mother was amazing wdym 😭
The story in scanners was promising but failed because the head explosion was the center piece.
i have a letterboxd video game if you are interested you could make a video about it
12 Angry Men and 2001 bored me to death. Where is Possession (1981) in its place? ;))
It dont seem Like a good movie like ive just been trying to find this 1 scene and it can’t pull it up cuz the movie is so bad people dont make lil vids out of it
Here's my 10 picks for films I think are the best( I missed the forms somehow lol) -Schindler's List(1993) -The Prestige(2006) -12 Angry Men(1957) -Jurassic Park(1993) -Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003) -The Lord of the Rings(2001-2003) -2001: A Space Odyssey(1968) -Stalker(1979) -Raiders of the Lost Ark(1981) - The Green Mile(1999) Its probably stupid to even give my opinion now, but I thought I'd least show what I had in mind.
It's a good list! We vote on the Top 100 every year so you'll get a chance to vote next time :)
Thank you so much! I knew you uploaded just recently, but I didn't watch them because I was super busy and I was bummed out yesterday that I missed my chance to register out a ballot. I definitely will register next year though!
I actually liked Cosmopolis. I feel it continues themes from Videodrome and Crash.
3 times member of the 69th club and proud
Thanks for answering my question TJ 😎
Excellent picks
1:42:34 Camera Buff go mentioned, let's gooooo! Sadly didn't make the list but I guess I will be the #1 fan of this community. Also get stream as always TJ sad that I missed it.
Love love love this stream!! I wasn't able to catch it live but I'm thoroughly enjoying the replay!!! Cheers friend!
Thank you!
Magnolia????
If you replace Magnolia with The Stunt Man I'll forgive you. I guess Polanski sucks too...oh well--good job
Some really interesting titles in there. Nice job. Great to see Daisies getting more appreciation. It's in my own TOP 100 list at no.18 💮
That's awesome, and thank you!
So angry I didnt see any carpenter UNTIL THE THING DROPPED LETSGOOOO
I hope you do more live streams
This was so good. Thank you so, so much for doing this TJ
Thanks for watching!
Man with a movie camera director was born in my hometown
That's fucking sick
Thanks for bringing the existence of that Lee Chang-dong box set to my attention, immediately placed an order for it. I already have Poetry on Blu-ray but I needed copies of the other movies in that set, especially Green Fish which is the only film of his that I haven't seen yet. Love his work.
Same! Can't wait to finally watch Oasis and Secret Sunshine.
THE GOAT
LOL that thumbnail! BTW it’s the 10th anniversary of Whiplash so I take my complaints back for JK Simmons and the movie’s birthday! 🥳
Hey Cinemateq community, here’s some stats about both the 2023 and 2024 Cinemateq Top 100 lists: - 2023’s list had only ONE film from Latin America (Mexico’s The Holy Mountain). 2024’s list had… wait for it… only ONE film from Latin America (this time it was Brazil’s City of God) - 2023’s list had 5 films directed by women (Aftersun, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, The Matrix, American Psycho, Little Women [Greta’s version]). 2024’s list had 6 films directed by women (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Aftersun, The Matrix, Daisies, Lady Bird, and City of God, which is co-directed by a woman) - 2023’s list had 12 animated films. 2024’s list had 7 animated films. - Newest film that made it to 2023’s list was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was released in summer 2023. Newest film to appear on 2024’s list is Dune: Part Two, released March 2024. (Across the Spider-Verse dropped off of this year’s list.) - Oldest film in 2023’s list was The Wizard of Oz, released in 1939. Oldest film that made 2024’s list is Metropolis, released in 1927. - 2023’s list had 18 horror films. 2024’s list had only 10 horror films (Using Letterboxd’s genre filter and what they consider Horror) - Stanley Kubrick remains the GOATED director with the most films on both 2023 and 2024 list. Seven of his films made it to 2023’s list. Six of his films made it to 2024’s list. (Paths of Glory is the film that dropped off the list this year) - 2023’s list had four films from the current decade (the 2020’s) (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Aftersun, Babylon, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse). 2024’s list included four films from this current decade (EEAAO, Aftersun, Poor Things, and Dune: Part Two) - Sight and Sound’s current #1 film of all time, Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, did NOT make it to both 2023 and 2024’s lists. I guess it’s too damn long for the Cinemateq community. - The decade that shows up the most in 2023’s list was the 1990’s, with a total of 26 films. The decade with the most appearances in 2024’s list is the 2000’s, with a total of 25 films. - Much to TJ’s dismay, La La Land made it to the list both years. In comparison, Moonlight, the film that beat La La Land for best picture at the 2017 Oscars, dropped off the list in the 2024 version. - 2023’s #1 film dropped only one spot to #2. And 2023’s #2 film is now 2024’s #1 pick. Thank you TJ for this fun project. Always enjoy your content.
This is so sick, thank you for putting this together!
Thanks for putting together this list. I completely forgot that I submitted a form.
You must see a film more then once if you want to say something about it. It seems you haven't understand most of the films you are taking about. For example, Spider is one of his best transition movie, between body horror, and gangster film. Videodrome is a very good but dated and not very well scripted movie. You seem to have no use of analysing movie. It's a pity.
I didn’t mind the movie it’s not my favorite
I actually watched the movie, im not all that familiar with D&D but man i frikin loved this movie. If i had a girlfriend, this would be a solid date movie. Its fun, funny, has great action, and even has a beautiful one shot take.
I haven't seen this, but I imagine it's going to feel kinda like magic magic to me. Watching a mentally ill person deal with shit and have no idea what is happening lol. I'm into it, I liked Hereditary and Midsummer and those are both super weird and trippy.
:/ bruh I'd like to see them try to make a movie
I just watched the movie and I’m amazed by its artwork and originality. I find your analysis and interpretation to be very interesting. But there is much more. It is beautiful and surrealistic as all the artwork in Parajanov’s museum. I had heard that Sayat Nova, who lived in the 1700s, was in love with his benefactor’s wife. Many of his songs are about his love for her. We see this and much more of his biography in the movie, all expressed with much symbolism. After all, the movie was made in 1968, under soviet oppression. Parajanov had been imprisoned and persecuted for his avant garde art. So there is revolutionary, anti soviet, anti oppression, expression here. Also, in 1968, people were “looking for the answer”, so this movie leaves you with questions on your mind as many great movies of that era such as “2001 A Space Odessey”.
In my opinion this movie is perfect and better than pus in boots the last wish
Discovering you from France. Here's the ballot I submitted : Midsommar (2019), Persona (1966), Mirror (1975), Twin Peaks : Fire Walk With Me (1992), Come and See (1985), Let The Right One In (2008), The Double Life of Veronique (1991), Alice in the Cities (1974), Days of Heaven (1978), A Swedish Love Story (1970). Considering the number limitation, I wanted my list to have some diversity. Therefore, I didn't put more than one movie from the same director and I wanted to push certain films more than others. Here's the actual look of my favorite movies list on Letterboxd without such restrictions : 1. Midsommar (2019) 2. Persona (1966) 3. Mirror (1975) 4. Twin Peaks : Fire Walk With Me (1992) 5. Cries and Whispers (1972) 6. Come and See (1985) 7. Let The Right One In (2008) 8. The Double Life of Veronique (1991) 9. Alice in the Cities (1974) 10. Fanny and Alexander (1984) [I talk about the original TV version obviously, which is far superior to the theatrical cut] 11. Three Colors : Red (1994) 12. Autumn Sonata (1978) 13. Notorious (1946) 14. Nostalgia (1983) 15. Hereditary (2018) 16. Days of Heaven (1978) 17. Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) 18. Badlands (1973) 19. A Swedish Love Story (1970) 20. Wings of Desire (1987) 21. Mulholland Drive (2001) 22. Melancholia (2011) 23. Blind Chance (1987) 24. Damnation (1988) As all favorite movies lists, some additions are made with time and the order is constantly moving. However, the films that are in my list are well established. Can't wait to see the results ! Just hope not to see 10 American blockbusters in the top 10.
Honestly, Any movie with David Bowie in it (good or bad) would always be welcomed into the top 5. Especially one where he’s casted as Nikola Tesla. One of the greatest musicians playing one of the greatest inventors is honestly a brilliant bit of casting on Nolan’s part
I was hoping you would mention Joseph Kahn's new film called 'Ick' at Midnight Madness. Im gonna check that one out soon, hopefully it is as good as his previous movie.
I stay away from Midnight Madness unless it's a known director to me. I've experienced to many late night misses over the last couple of years, and nothing is worse than a bad film experience at 2 AM. But please let me know how ICK is!
It’s definitely worth it
Great video! I liked this very much too! ua-cam.com/users/clipUgkxKNWXiDYRJVhwocMyJuhyWE1E3wBj7SHB?si=3eLO71IzovqbNdrw
