THANK YOU FOR THIS! I’ve been trying to see this exact scene for years and couldn’t find it. Patinkin is a genius
this is it
Does anybody know what Toni’s saying from 3:08 to 3:44?
This entire song and cast is phenomenal but i especially love Eddie and May’s parts
So perfectly disturbing, Jackie’s actor is so good I hate him! And I feel horrible for Nadine

What no one seems to be talking about is the People of Atlanta sting at the very end, and I think that sudden flash of light and music is so good!!
Master class!
Love the inclusion of It Goes On and On!!!
Adela is a jerk. She might be pretty on the outside, but her calling her sister ugly shows she is a hateful bully.
There was surely something terrifying about how well Eartha could grab an audience by the throat
This, live, would have been devastating!
I saw the revival of this play in its previews in March of 2023. I went in knowing nothing about the show or case and by the time it got to this scene, I wanted to jump on the stage and save Leo. It's absolutely disgusting what that antisemitic mob did in the name of supposed justice when they clearly had the wrong man. Poor Leo. And Mary, too, because justice was miscarried in her name. I hope both their souls are at peace now, wherever they are.
There is something so terrifying about Brent in this scene. So well done. His hands look so..large? Cartoonishly so. Such subtle hand choreo that totally fits in but dramatically sticks out. Just genius.
I got the opportunity to see the broadway revival of this incredible musical on 6/29/23 and oh. my. god. I'd only ever listened to this song and the tony performance of This Is Not Over Yet (2023 version) and was already familiar with Leo Frank's case and it became my second favorite musical of all time. I'm so glad I got to see Ben Platt, Michaela Diamond, and the rest of the amazing cast. Truly an amazing experience. This might just be one of my favorite opening songs of all time, had this not been confederate, antisemitic, pro-slavery Georgia waving around the massive confederate flags. I mean I get why they did it in the musical, but still. I fell in love with the vocals and instrumentals starting at the big "GOOOOD BLESS THE SIIIIGHT" at the end.
Does your channel have the whole show?!
I have seen Rufus do this multiple times and this end of the song without giving the audience the chance to applaud is chill inducing and the the way they should have kept it
It is understandable that they wanted justice for Mary, but they had the wrong man and it was racism and hatred that really killed Mr. Frank.
I don’t know how you found this footage but as someone who loves seeing stuff like this I am forever great full
If only the staging and use of the stage had been this phenomenal in the current Broadway revival w/Ben Platt! Arden's helming of the revival is STATIC compared to Prince's -- who, let's face it, was the MASTER of dramatic musical staging. May God rest Hal's soul. Carver so brilliantly unleashes Frank's inner cad here. A primal yet chilling number. Platt, for all of his talent, cannot match the late, great Brent Carver here.
Ah, is it not worth seeing?? Even the clips with Jeremy Jordan on UA-cam have grand, exaggerated movements- if it’s static it means nothing
@@MrHalebale I guess it's worth seeing, esp. if you're a Ben Platt fan. But for me, Platt's characterization was timid, as was Arden's staging. I was (and continue to do so here) expressing my own personal opinion -- mine only. I haven't seen the Jeremy Jordan clips here on YT.
To be fair to Arden, there’s a big difference between directing a full production of a musical (like Prince’s direction for Parade) and directing a semi-staged concert that was only supposed to last for two weeks (like the current revival). Like the recent Into The Woods revival, the current Parade revival started off as an encores concert at NYCC. It just happened to be successful enough at Encores that producers decided to transfer the existing production (without allocating an additional budget to make changes) to Broadway for a limited run. I agree that very little can live up to Prince’s direction, but the circumstances behind the two productions are also fundamentally different.
@@peterporkeristhespiderham988 I take your point and I appreciate your reminder that it transferred from ENCORES! to B'way. I was going to opine Arden could've chosen to make the production bigger and/or tweak some elements that would've had sizable impacts on what I assume is a more fully staged PARADE than its City Center forebear; hence my assumption). Yes, circumstances separating the two versions are different. But perhaps Arden could've pushed for a bigger budget for the B'way transfer to institute augmentations that might've sharpened the staging -- and thus reducing the transfer's feeling like a lavish live action audio-visual museum-like presentation.
The most terrifying moment in musical theater history.
LITERALLY
oh no what happened to the rest of the show?! Did they disappear?
I hate that the ending was shorten. It's so much better as it was
Frankie repeating the soldier lines as the first world War is coming into play is so heartbreaking. Goes to show the kids in this show really had to grow up quick
Very dark
Women don't know how to aim🤣
Interesting/entertaining don't know what's going on but I'm here for it
It’s a rule for every actor to behave as if their character is the main character but it is the rare show where every character should have their own show. This is one of those shows where every performer (and lets pour a whole drawer of gin for the band) needs to be a talented musician (not just someone with a voice) for the show to work. The texture and richness of the arrangements, there are so many notes, so many musical ideas, and it all works because everyone is at the top of their game. It reminds me of those famous Mozart quotes: only in opera (and some musical theatre) can dozens of people sing their lives at the same time and it’s never just noise. And the whole thing is so complete, that if you remove one note, it all crumbles.
It’s not effortless when Norm Lewis raises up to that a-flat and yet it feels like it just pours out of him. I used to think the line was “at the top of my range” rather than “at the top of my game.” It’s just so great how it seems to come out organically from the moment even tho I know it’s listed as optional in the score. It’s just so great to see the great Norm Lewis her a role where he can show everything that is inside his voice. And I also love how, here but in much of the prerromance, the actors are allowed to play with the music in a truly jazz/blues style. It wouldn’t be jazz if you play it as written. It’s a rule for every actor to behave as if their character is the main character but it is the rare show where every character should have their own show.
She was so robbed out of the Tony
I love the underlying dialogue below the actual song, it's great and should've been kept
I agree. I really hope that the NYCC production brings it back.
@@rickwilson4077 same here!
couldn’t agree more
It's a stirring and patriotic number, but the constant march tempo makes it feel ominous as well - gives the sense that there's something brutal underneath all that patriotism.
When you see the confederate flags rolling out as the final verse plays you suddenly realize what the spider was singing for along with the people of Atlanta and it throws for a whiplash of the time it takes place and your like "oh....OH. Oh my god, So THAT'S what this shows about." Even if you never knew the leo frank case or knew that the show revolved around the case you can tell that something ominous and bad will happen and it does in the worst and tragic possible way.
what a song, what a performance…
I was so lucky to see this production in April 2000, and on an unplanned trip back to the city a few months later, I managed to talk the manager of a bodega out of a poster for the show. Truly a prized possession.

@@loveyall1910 oh okay, I don't hear them good now that I'm in the bus with the headphones bc there's some noise, thank you

In my ignorance I have no idea what this is ....bloody love it but still have no idea what it is ...prey tell
It is from a musical back in 2000 on broadway called The Wild Party. And this is the legend Eartha Kitt playing Dolores who is a faded star in the story. This is the song When It Ends singing about being prepared for when you are no longer successful. She was nominated for a Tony award but didn't win sadly.
@@guyadams1947 thanks man ..eartha is a one off ..what a career

A brilliant ensemble number!
I was fortunate to see this. I left thinking 'I need to see this 3 more times'! Way ahead of its time.
This way way ahead of its time.
Am looking for a quality full version of the show hoping to add it into our musical history curriculum. Long shot commenting here but any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel so many themes of this show are present today and is one I’d like my students to study
Reach out to New York City Center who is running a production of this show right now and provides educational content paired with their shows :)

typical newyork condescending casting. Somewhat laughable for a Spaniard.
Got see this live. Absolutely brilliant. And this song stopped the show. R.I.P., Brent Carver, We were lucky to have you.
