Dissection of Trump's Victory and Identity Politics - S04E09 - FCBG
The 2024 Presidential election just occurred and Donald Trump won convincingly against Kamala Harris. In this episode, we examine reasons people gave for voting for Donald Trump, including: immigration, wages, funding for the military, the federal deficit, government bloat, stock market volatility, and identity politics. We spend a fair amount of time discussing identity politics, which we ultimately conclude is privileging minority candidates over majority candidates despite their qualifications and, importantly, if someone doesn't vote for a minority candidate (or disagrees with their policies or views), accusing them of some form of bigotry. We also discuss briefly how the media depicted the candidates and portrayed the results. Finally, we touch briefly on the response of progressives to the outcome.

Government and Disasters and Is Trump a Fascist - S04E08 - FCBG
Переглядів 1621 день тому
In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, we tackle two topics. First, we discuss whether the government should help people rebuild if their homes are in zones that will continuously flood, burn down from forest fires, or be destroyed by natural disasters. We all agree that the government should not and that people should assume that risk at their peril. The government’s role should be ...

In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, we are joined by Vance Reavie from the Independent Center. We start with a lengthy discussion about independent voters - how many there are, what they want in candidates, what issues are important to them, and why they often feel marginalized in US elections. We then turn to the primary question of whether independent voters will decide the Pres...
Harris Baits Trump and Brazil Censors X - S04E06 - Finding Common Battle Grounds

In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, Josh, Tom, and Ryan discuss the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris and the instances of censorship taking place around the world. Amazingly, we have clear agreement on the debate - Harris won by baiting Trump and then letting him lose the debate by looking like a fearmongering crazy old man. The memes that resulted from T...

In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, Ryan, Tom, and Josh start with a discussion of Kamala Harris's entrance into the Presidential race in the US. Josh and Tom aren't fans. Ryan disagrees with most of this....

Elite's Controlling Biden's Election and the UK's Turn to Labour - S04E03 - FCBG

In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, we tackle two topics. Joe Biden's poor debate performance has been in the news a lot as of late. Rather than examine that, specifically, we discuss who is "pulling the strings" in the Democratic Party: who ultimately picks the candidates and who helps them get the nomination and get elected. This was spurred by a video clip from congressional re...

    My message to the Norwegian government and people: Norwegians... you are good, cultured and sensible people We ask you to deport the person whose name is called: Silwan Mumika Sweden expelled him because he caused doctrinal problems and burned other peoples' holy books! This matter caused the cooling of relations between Sweden and us! Just one please Do not grant this criminal residency in your lands He doesn't deserve it

    Hello Lawyer here. Adequate provocation is only a defense to 1st degree. You would still be convicted 2nd degree ( intentional homicide) and the language of 2nd degree includes a provision that states if charged with 1st degree but the state is unable to refute the the 4 mitigating circumstances the then the defendant is convicted of 2nd degree (look at the Rittenhouse Jury Instructions count 4 for an example of this). You are mistaken on the 2nd degree distinction. The listed items the prosecution must prove were not present for 1st degree are (a) Adequate provocation; 940.01(2)(b)(b) Unnecessary defensive force; (c) Prevention of felony. ; and(d) Coercion; necessity. The Second item Unnecessary defensive force is often referred to as imperfect self defense in other states and take the crime from murder to intentional manslaughter or in Wisconsin to intentional 2nd degree homicide. Imperfect self defense is where I believe I am in danger but my belief is not reasonable.

    I can see why Josh felt like he was being accused of being “racist & sexist”… because he was absolutely defending racism by immediately claiming that the story was completely fake, are further being sexist by dismissing this female athlete and calling her a liar. Then he drops the N word 2 minutes later! It doesn’t matter if you’re quoting her, you don’t get a pass to say the N word in that moment.

    Very interesting format. My take on the question of ROP being too woke ... I would say that IF Amazon holds to the assertion that ROP is Tolkien authentic in spirit and lore ... then I would include myself in thinking it is too woke ( and hazard the guess that were he alive to review these first three episodes, that he would not like them at all. Admittedly, this is a guess, but one rooted in his letters underscoring his distaste for liberal interpretation of his works, notably in regards to movies or television. I think that while Amazon has the legal right to make changes (in accordance with the agreed upon limits to reference material) ... I think it in poor taste to do it in the manner they did - to obtain the rights after Tolkien could not object. Based on his interviews and personal letters that were released by the Tolkien estate ... I could easily see him take up the rally cry that his loyal fans repeated in protest and drive the point home with ... To paraphrase one of my creations ... "The Shadow that bred them can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own ... it only ruins and twists ..." A complete fabrication of course, but I would put money that I got the outrage and offense taken.

    I can see the point of dismissing expertise all together, but there is also the other side of the coin that some "Experts" have a mentality that because they have gone to school and have degrees in their fields that I shouldn't have the right to question what they say. Isn't questioning the basis for science? Isn't asking questions how we advance?

    You're not defending property with a gun. You're bodyguarding the property and guarding your body with the gun. Rittenhouse wasn't provoking anybody. He had the gun out as a warning. His attackers failed to heed the warning. One more thing. It wasn't a protest anymore. It was a riot. I agree that Rittenhouse was foolish to be there. The fact that he put himself in the middle of a riot did not justify the actions of his attackers. So were the rioters. Something else. Rittenhouse was legally privileged to carry that gun. You don't know the law.

    There is no “gender pay gap”

  • @tjralphs3898
    @tjralphs3898 3 роки тому

    Ryan, can you explain how the pay gap increased when controlling for Education? Is it possible that Men are more likely to work while going to school so that would account for the increase?

    • @findingcommonbattlegrounds
      @findingcommonbattlegrounds 3 роки тому

      Sure. Good question. Controlling for a variable is like making everyone equal on that item (in this case, education). If we take all of the men and women in that dataset and make it so they all have the same education (let's say a high school diploma), what we can then see is how big the gender pay gap is if education is equal for everybody. But here's the problem: the gender pay gap is much bigger for people with more education, which, while disturbing, makes sense when you think about it. Let me explain... At lower levels of education (e.g., less than high school), pay is lower, which means the gap has to be lower. Let's say men make $40k and women make $30k per year. So, the pay gap is only $10k. At higher levels of education, the gap gets bigger, in part because there is more variation possible. Let's say that men make $150k and women make $100k. That's a gap of $50k. (I'm not using actual numbers, but these are similar to the actual numbers.) The majority of people have gaps at the low end because most people don't make huge amounts of money. But there are a fair number of people at the high end. When we control for education, we're effectively merging the gap across all educations (making everyone equal on education). That means the bigger gap at the high end is now merged with the smaller gap at the low end. As a result, the gap increases on average. Make sense?

    Good Episode. What do you guys think about the following? 1. What is the main goal of the majority of Media Outlets? I think it is to make money. To that point would it make sense for them to be biased which in turn creates traffic for them which makes them more money.
