I cannot imagine being Lightoller in this situation. You have passengers who are trying to carry their luggage on, passengers who are telling you to 'hold' the boat for them, passengers who are saying goodbye to their loved ones that you physically have to ripped away from them, taking children from their father's arm knowing this is the last time they will ever hold their child, and all on a sinking boat. Knowing that you're not going to get into a boat yourself, knowing that you might die this night, and then these people who you're trying to save are not cooperating with you (who can blame them tho? it's hard to stay calm in a situation like this). Then having to repeat yourself over and over and over to new passengers who just arrived and are even more panicked and more desperate.

Some Titanic fans may not actually know what an adventurous life Charles Lightoler had, and I could certainly see him portrayed like this. Going to sea at age 13 as an apprentice aboard a sailing bark, numerous close-call adventures both aboard ships & in exotic ports of call, becoming a gold prospector during the Klondike gold rush, somewhat of a cowboy while in Alberta, Canada, meeting his future Austrailian wife in Sidney, Word Wars I & II(Royal Navy + serving at Dunkirk). Surviving the Titanic almost seems inconsequential for a character like him. As a side note in Cameron's film, it would have been funny + added to the drama if he had placed Rose, instead of the unknown female passanger, in the lowering lifeboat.

The lifeboats aboard Titanic actually had a steel beam in the keel to prevent the boat from buckling under a full load, but as referenced here most crewmen on Titanic were unaware of this fact.

I never got the "women and children first" thing... I would think that in an era where there were few (dignified) careers for women that earned anything resembling a living wage, keeping a family intact should have taken priority... I guess it's the simple solution, you can tell a man apart from a woman or a child... but that still puts the family in the poorhouse unless they were of the privileged first class passengers.

Lightoller looks like the British William Dafoe lol and among most of these White Star Line Imperialists! Mr Andrews is the real hero and tried to get many people off of the ship as possible, and he convinced his own men to fill the boats to the maximum capacity which is 65-70 men, really respect him for that!
