Studio Experience Day with Dave Mattacks | The Hive Rooms | Drum Hangs
On Tuesday 16th August, we were pleased to be able to present our first studio experience day at The Hive Rooms in Surrey, UK, with the legendary Mr. Dave Mattacks.
Seven excellent drummers got the chance to hang with Dave and record drums to two tracks of Dave's choice. Dave was able to give constructive feedback and guidance about how to best approach the music.
This was a truly inspiring day and a wonderful opportunity for everyone involved.
A big thank you to the excellent team at @thehiverooms for creating such an amazing establishment and for being incredible hosts.
Also thanks to @evansdrumheads for supplying the G1's and G2's for my Yamaha 9000.
Looking forward to the next event - please visit our website and register to our mailing list to be kept up to date with future events.

Luckily, Russ didn't attempt to tell any of Phil's jokes! It's so important to have mentors in your life. Thank you for everything, Phil Solomo...

    Thank you for the video, Russ. Phil also taught me how to read, and he did it by post 🤗 (I live in Croatia). I had the pleasure of meeting Phil in person - there was some time to visit Brighton during my business trip to London sometime 2010. We spoke about all sorts, I'll never forget his comment on Steve Smith "Don't care for him, he plays too many notes" 😁 I was always an avid reader of Phil's Drum Study leaflets and have all of his books at home (went through all of them). Every now and then I think of Phil, his character, energy and a weird sense of humour. RIP Mr. Solomon, people live as long as they are remembered by others. Obviously, Phil influenced lives of ppl across the globe 🙌 Cheers from Croatia

    Drummers, Colaiuta & Weckl will never hang their sticks up, it's not an option. Their passion is too great, their need for progress never diminishes, from the very start both Drummers as students had what it took to achieve such greatness and mastery. Whether these favourite players of mine chose Drums & Music or whether the Drums & Music chose them, like a fish to water they were made for the job, both players on their instruments together with the music compliment one another perfectly. Both players constantly listened, practiced & learnt quickly with no clock watching regarding their practice sessions, in other words to get good they forgot about time, that's when it's best, nothing else to think about other than practicing 8 to 10 every day. Both players exposed to different genres of Music & other Drummers from an early age, not being glued to just one style or one particular sound. It's been said many many times that it was Steve Gadd who changed the face of Modern Drumming, there's no doubt Colaiuta & Weckl would agree as Gadd was everywhere & on everything at the time and still is "God Bless Him" Gadd is the man responsible for the new breed of Drummer, Buddy to. I'm pretty sure that if Buddy was alive today he'd have his eye on Weckl & Colaiuta where as years ago it was these two players that had their eyes on Buddy. I believe that for years to come Vinnie & Dave will be insurpassable as Masters of this quality don't come around that often. I love them both.

    • @musopaul5407
      @musopaul5407 8 місяців тому

      Great post. And I think it's true; without Gadd, Vinnie and Dave wouldn't play the way they do, both in terms of they way they use the set and the way they navigate charts. I remember Chick Corea saying that one of the things he loved about Gadd's playing was that he could play the same thing at the end of an arrangement that he had at the beginning, which was not true of most Jazz players at the time. I think using the drums to complement and enhance the structure of a composition was something Gadd did like no-one else, and which Dave and Vinnie built on. That said, and while I love and admire all three of them, I think Vinnie is the Buddy Rich of his generation; in a class all his own.
