My name is Bugsy Sailor, and on January 1, 2019 I began a resolution to watch and photograph every sunrise of the year. I sought the sun, but what I found was so much more. So much, in fact, that I have yet to miss a sunrise am still at it.
What started as Year of the Sunrise has grown into a life of sunrise. Since beginning, I have watched over 2,100 sunrises, primarily from the shores of Lake Superior in Marquette County, Michigan.
For the time being, this is the video content of said project, Year of the Sunrise.

Sunrise No. 2,216 • January 24, 2025 • Lower Harbor Ore Dock, Marquette, MI (Orehenge)
It’s been a while since I’ve attempted an Orehenge sunrise up close and personal. But I sucked up to my social anxiety and crossed my fingers for a smaller crowd. I’d say it was a pretty good morning for a pretty good morning.

Another epic sunrise and a fantastic outing. This morning was an air temperature of -8º with a w wind chill of -28º, still shy of my coldest sunrise on record, which was closer to a -35º wind chill. As inspired as yesterday’s sunrise outing was, I enjoyed this one even more. However, I’m not as in love with the photos I walked away with. I think the adrenaline of the morning made me all a littl...

(Sorry the audio is a little wonky in this one) It has taken seven years to see the sun for a January 20 sunrise and it couldn’t have been more epic this morning. I’m not sure there is a version of sunrise I love more than bitter cold with massive amounts of sea smoke evaporating from Lake Superior and the sun beaming through the steam. This one was a -2º air temperature with a -22º wind chill ...

Buckle in, this is a long one. This was a proper sunrise outing, a full 2 hours in the end, all with the best winter conditions. This is a long one, with a slow start, but shows a lot more of the perspective of the commitment to getting out there each and every day, especially in the winter when needing to brush off my car and bundle up. Enjoy. The perfect sunrise doesn’t require actually seein...

I did this a little backwards this time, filming all my dialogue after I was done with my photography for the morning. Of note: • Excited to discover Sunrise 2,225 will fall on 2/2/25. This is the only time of the project this will occur, even if I were to photography 10,000 sunrises, this would not happen again. • Took my first little spill of the season. It tends to happen a couple times duri...

Finally a proper winter sunrise. This one felt just as good as yesterday, probably better! I've been craving a morning with heavy snowfall all season, and it finally came today. Happy Winter Solstice! This morning was a beautiful outing which a fresh layer of snow all around. It always takes a little extra gumption to get to the top of Sugarloaf first thing in the morning, but it never fails to fill my soul with a little extra spirit for the day. A proper sunrise outing this morning. What makes a proper sunrise outing? 1) The body and spirit feel good and are enjoying the fresh air 2) Putting in a decent effort, this usually means walking further than usual 3) Feeling good about what I captured in camera All of those combined mean I probably spent a longer time at sunrise, meaning more time outside. P.S. One of two things happened. I ei...

Besides enjoying the visual experience I also like your music choices. Have you ever considered sharing the artist and songs you use?
I can try to. Most of these are generic from a royalty free music service so that I can use them
You can understand why ancient people built their temples aligned with the cosmos; all that glowing power captured for a moment!
Absolutely! With this structure being 1,000 feet long, I wonder where else this takes place through such a long structure.
Absolutely stunning! Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome!
I applauded you! Did you hear! :))
Ha! Like in person?! Were you one of the folks out there?
@@BugsySailor Not there. At my computer! It's much warmer here.
Haha, thank you! Thank you. *takes a bow*
It is always inspiring in the woods.
Maybe one day I'll get there, but I definitely have times in the woods where I'm not inspired. Often, like today, I'm thankful for an uninspired sunrise outing. I think I've been exhausted from the inspiration of the last week that I longed for an uninspiring morning to let my brain rest.
came for Sunrise, stayed for Waves. They mesmerize me. glad i found your channel. (5:00), Wow
Thanks for checking it out! I'll post more mesmerizing waves.
Absolutely epic sunrise. The music choice watching waves made me feel like I was at a spa!
Thank you! Getting a little better this each and every go of it
The cold truly creates exceptional beauty!!🤩 Love this video!🌊 Thanks for sharing Bugsy!🤗
You're welcome! And thank you so much for watching and commenting.
I love this one! Thanks Bugsy!! ❤️❤️❤️
You're welcome. And thank YOU!
Enjoyed every minute! Those icy-thick waves! 😮
The eddies! You totally have a spot there! The way the surf came from one direction, swirled around all the seen & unseen rocks, bounced off the boulders and kept going was mesmerizing. The oldies over here were inspired, with thanks. The minus temperatures have kept us from seeing our friend Lake Ontario, so thank you for being motivated to share Superior.
Thanks Mark! Keeping Ontario on my mind of when I can get there for a sunrise.
Great view. Just one of the two thousand one hundred sunrises so far.
I don't know how it got to be so many already.
@@BugsySailor I started out doing sunsets and sunrises then added other topics.
nice video - love you Bugsy
Thank you!
I kept exclaiming, “Oh wooow, that’s beautiful.” -and then you walked through a movie-perfect snow draped forest, and the frosted waves, and that magical inlet. The coffee must indeed have been great! Thank you so much for sharing.
You’re welcome! This one took a while to put together. I’ll be honest… there are a lot of mornings where I feel like I’m walking through a movie.
@ I can imagine with all the different cuts. Our Lake Ontario shoreline (the little I’ve seen) isn’t as green-we have a highway that borders 1 length and 1 “side”. Besides the sheer beauty, the other heartening part of your channel is to see a young person love the outdoors and our precious water, specifically. 🙌🏼
Hey Buggsy! I'm here on the UA-cam channel to help you get monetized so you can but your NAS! Best of luck to you and keep up the awesome work!
Ha! Thanks for tuning in. Video storage is starting to pile up way faster than expected. Going to need to find a solution sooner than later. Appreciate the support!
@BugsySailor Storage definitely adds up fast! I've also been looking at a NAS for myself to store my photos and DVD collection. So my wife and I had to laugh when you said you were looking for one too haha
Oh, that hurts when you go through the crust! I used to love those difficult walks through the snow, though. Thanks for taking me along!
Thanks so much for doing this series. Please don't stop. I miss the UP and the North Shore so badly; seeing the sunrise as it happened is incredible.
Thanks for tuning in! I'm really enjoying it right now, but it certainly adds a lot of extra demand to the project. I'll try to keep up with doing one at least weekly. Get UP here soon!
I love Lake Superior meatballs! ❤
Meatballs! LOL!

We don't get up to the 906 much anymore but I love seeing your videos. Have a Villa Capri pizza for me!
Get UP here soon here! And count me in, I'll get one this weekend.
I also found you through the CBS Sunday I’m looking forward to watching the sunrise while on my treadmill. I live in a wooded area so no sunrise or sunsets for me I really appreciate the ability to enjoy the view. I like the short comments during the walk to the place you are going to .
Does it snow in the woods in which you live? While I love my time on the lake shore every morning, I do miss time in the middle of the woods. Thanks for joining my journey.
Your enthusiasm is contagious! Lake Superior looks magnificent. You've recorded some spectacular sunrise on Lake Superior. Thanks for sharing. 2200 sunrises. More than six years! Congratulations on your perseverance 🎉 May new year bring you more beautiful pictures of sunrise!
Thanks for watching! I don't know what it is... but I get a lot more enthusiastic during the winter
We were climbing around the Black Rocks on Presque Isle this past October. The lake was no where near this dramatic!!! Thanks for sharing!!
You gotta get back here when she's raging!
@@BugsySailoryes we do! Amazing!
The snow today made me smile. Felt like it was finally winter.
Yes, happy that it feels like the middle of winter suddenly!
My husband and I enjoyed a picnic along the shores of Lake Superior once; it was September and crazy cold, but so beautiful!
Get back here again soon! I suggest visiting in each of the four sesons.
Those ice balls are so cool, we’ve never seen that phenomenon. 2,200 was just meditatively perfect. You have two old timers appreciatively waiving back our thanks from TO.
Waving back! Thanks for following along.
❤
I grew up in Marquette, from 1957 to 1970. It’s a wonderful treat to find your videos, thank you!
Thanks for checking out my work. Get UP here soon, eh!
Just found you through CBS Sunday! I look forward to sharing your sunrise walks along L Superior.
Thanks for checking out my work! What an honor to have my work shared nationally.
Rollers and those bounce back waves-the best! Happy New Year!
The lake is so dynamic this time of year! My favorite time is the freeze and thaw of Superior. Happy New Year back to you.
Ah, didn’t expect that much payoff from the view! Glad the “easy” way fueled your soul, we’re certainly appreciative too. 🙌🏼 🌲
I should have clarified, in the winter the "easy" way is definitely the most difficult way, those stairs turn into chutes.
Thanks for all you do!
You're welcome! Thank you for following along on this journey.
Hiker #2! Now there's a fun little ice breaker :)
I miss scenarios in which I have to come up with an ice breaker!
Another beautiful morning, indeed. Your thoughtful comments of the moment, combined with the watery sounds and views are a balm against the overproduced media we’re forced to consume normally. So thank you! ✌🏼✌🏼from us in TO!
Thank you!
I wouldn't overthink the commentary too much, it's just nice to hear ya talk in between the moments of stillness. These sunrises are my only way of virtually experiencing my favorite part of going to NMU: appreciating Marquette's natural beauty with friends. Anything more formal or structured might miss the point.
I appreciate that! Thanks for the input and for following along.
Gorgeous with the silvery-slate textured waves. 🙌🏼
It was a pleasant one. Felt good.
LOVE this one! Truly a magical place with those trees! Thanks for bringing me and my appreciative family along! 🌊 💫 🌲
Thank you Mark! This one felt really good. They're certainly not all this inspired.
I love a good sunrise. Sometimes those winter burners can be the best, so while the data suggests odds are against you, to catch the rare one throwing gold on the snow is so worth it.
Winter sunrises > Autumn sunrises > Late Spring Sunrises > Summer sunrises > Early Spring sunrises ... or something like that. But Winter is king.
2169 = another winner. 🎉I love that flat beach area with turquoise waves beyond your lighthouse and appreciate the story-! It got up to 41 yesterday on the beaches of Ontario.
Thank you so much for sharing your gifted view of those gorgeous, feisty Lake Superior rollers! Appreciation from Lake Ontario! 🌊
You're very welcome! It's been a long, long time since I've been to Lake Ontario. Any suggestions for best sunrise views?
@For sure! My morning-fan buddies say the eastern beaches like Bluffers Park Beach, Kew to Woodbine and Tommy Thompson park (but no direct water access there) are the best for sunrises in the Scarborough-Toronto shoreline area.
I admit to rewatching this one, especially after wrapping up the kayaks. Thanks from Lake Ontario! 🙌🏼
Thanks for watching.... again!
Beautiful! Love seeing the horizontal lines of the wave energy bouncing back!
Amazing video and beautiful relaxing sea and waves sounds. I've liked 💙💙
Thank you.
