It should not be pronounced "maul" stick! You're not going to be mauling anything or anyone. It comes from the German verb, mahlen, meaning to draw! The "a" is pronounced like a long, surprised, finally understanding "aaaaaah!" Like, i finally get it! It has neither the roundedness of an "ay" sound, nor the terror inflicted at the notion of brung "mauled" by a wild beast, just a simple sigh, "aaaaahhhh." MAHL stick. Great tool for "mahlen!"

Could you please tell me what the diameter of the stick you was using?
Raven Shadows I think she said 3/4" which is what I use. Made mine from a 3/4" maple dowel and a round drawer pull from Lee Valley.
