Clement has studied Violin for over a year. In addition to practicing the basic skills, he also learned a few simple songs. He likes playing a song he recently learned from Teacher Wan Chai. My wife and I like it, so are our parents. Not only is the melody beautiful, but it also brings out some history. "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" is an American folk song nearly two hundred years old. The music can trace its origin much earlier to the famous Opera masterpiece "Le devin du village" ("The Village Soothsayer"), composed by the great French philosopher Rousseau in the mid-eighteenth century. About a hundred years ago, this American folk song found its way to the Orients along with Western missionaries. Shen Binglian, a young musician at the time, heard the song and decided to give it simple Chinese lyrics with a Chinese title "摇船 Rowing Boat": 不要怕船小，不要怕浪头高。 用力啊用力，摇啊摇啊摇。 摇过了前村，穿过大石桥， 摇出了海口，游海岛。 不要怕船小，不要怕浪头高。 用力啊用力，摇啊摇啊摇。 Small boats are not to be afraid; high waves are not to be frightened. Row Hard, and keep rowing hard. Swayed through the village, passed through the stone bridge, Sailed to the sea and cruised the island. Small boats are not to be afraid; high waves are not to be frightened. Row Hard, and keep rowing hard. The inspiration of the lyrics is mainly related to the struggling coastal people at the time. In coastal areas of Eastern China, many villagers were sailing through rivers and canals with their family and belongings to the then newly-developed Shanghai for better livings. The song was also collected in the "Children's Music Textbook" published in 1932. It was popular among elementary and secondary schools at the time. After World War II, I am not sure if it was the textbook or the song itself, again found its way to the Malaya Peninsular, or what is known as Malaysia today. My dad learned this song from his music teacher in Ipoh, Malaysia when he was in Clement's age. He turns 80 next year. He loves this song so much and has remembered its lyrics and rhythms well. He has been singing the song since I was little, and I really like it too. A few weeks ago, when I heard Clement started learning this song, I was intrigued. After listening to Clement's play, my parents were so excited, and my mom spent the night trying to teach Clement the Chinese lyrics. It's a long talk, but I am pleasantly surprised that a tiny chapter of Clement's violin learning journey brings out a bit of history that echoes with myself and my parents.
