Can I customise this box to make all my bobbin lace tools fit?
Переглядів 3432 місяці тому
For a while I've been thinking there must be a better way to store my bobbin lace supplies. I doubt I would have come up with this idea, of using an antique box with a customised storage tray, on my own. In this video I get as far as making a "mock up" for the storage tray. When I am confident that it works well and doesn't need any more adjustments, I will make a final version which I will sha...

For those who are curious about why I haven't made any videos for the last five months, the short answer is that I just haven't felt like it! I had some car trouble which resulted in my car being in and out of the garage for 5 weeks and the repairs totally wiped out my savings. Around the same time I found out I was being made redundant. Soon after this a family member died in horrible circumst...

Multiple hobbies!!!!!! Me!
Because of your videos, I ventured out into the sketching and sketch book making world! I just got back from Italy. I took my little sketchbook and watercolor travel bag all over, everyday for 2 weeks! I was so overwhelmed and overstimulated by the beauty that I would take it out and not know where to start! Lol I am home now and sketching from our pictures! I just thought you would like to know that you inspired me!
21k views as watching this, so you are mainstream! Definitely not scraping the bottom of the barrel! Good on you for growing your channel!
Love your video.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing your interesting tutorial, I make my own books similar to yours, I made myself a book press, quite easy really, saves using all them heavy books as a press, also we have a dog which eats boneo biscuits, so I use the empty boxes which I cut them to size and glue them together, makes great book covers, thank you again, and good luck with future tutorials.
Thank you! Mention of Boneo biscuits brings back happy memories of my grandparents’ dog! (He would not touch it if you offered him a whole one, it had to be broken in half first haha)
@@madebylora well at least I get something from the boxes, incedently, I don't know if you have seen mike deakin? He creates journals cards etc, he is very good, well worth watching, have a great day.
I was taught tatting, making lace with tiny hooks like crochet.
This year I have started doing tatting too! I love how small and portable the supplies are for tatting, compared to bobbin lace. I enjoy doing both, in different circumstances.
اتمنى أن افعلها معك فهي صعبة بعض الشيء شكراً للبرنامج التعليمي أرجو المزيد منه هل بإمكانك ان تضعي بعد الانماط بشكل مجاني أكون شاكرة لك 😢❤
Thank you for your comment. It is definitely easier to learn if you have someone who you can sit with and be able to ask them questions. A good place to find free patterns is on Pinterest. I am hoping to do more lace videos soon. Thank you for watching. What is your language? Is it Arabic?

Excellent video, well paced for a beginner like me, love the way you improvised withe the smaller version too. Stitching part well explained and demonstrated thanks
Thank you! I’m glad you found this video helpful! A couple of people have said that the stitching part would be easier to see with a coloured thread. I don’t like to do that for blank sketchbooks because I sometimes like to draw across the join. However, next week I’ll be binding a book and will be using coloured thread and also a different technique for the covers. Keep an eye out for that, if you’re interested to see more.
I love your tutorial . It’s very easy to follow. I like the cross, twist & cross & extra twist on end. I like that you did this slow.
Thank you! I’m glad this was helpful! At the time when I made this video I wasn’t confident about when to do extra twists, but I have since learned that there should be 2 twists on the threads when they go around the pin at the end. So, if your last stitch ends with a twist anyway, then you only need to add one extra twist. But if your last stitch ends with a cross, then you need to add 2 extra twists. I hope that makes sense.
The sketchbooks you made are beautiful!
Thank you so much! Have you ever made your own books? If you are interested, I also have a tutorial on how I make fabric covered sketchbooks.
@@madebylora I have but they don’t turn out as professional as yours. I’ll definitely watch your book tutorial. Thanks.
@@jude1515 it's quite a long video but lots of people have commented that it was helpful doing it slowly step by step. I hope you will soon be making books you feel more proud of!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Now I understand this much better. I've watched others who don't say a word and they go slow the first two then speed up and you don't k ow what they're doing. Thank you again!! I learned macrame the old school way back in the early 1970's and making lace is facinating to me because I've also made intricate necklaces with macrame that remind me of some of the lace you can make.
Thank you for your lovely comment! I’m so glad you could follow what I was doing. It’s hard to know how many times to repeat the steps on a video. Have you ever tried Tatting? It’s sort of a cross between macrame and crochet. It’s classed as a type of lace but it’s made with knots. At some point I will do a video about it, but I also want to do more lace videos and several other crafts (too many ideas haha)
To the best of my knowledge, you twist at the end of the row once or twice to sort of sharpen the edge of your lace. Similar to chaining one at the end of a row in crochet
@@StillSyl thank you! Yes, I’ve since learnt that there should be 2 twists when the threads go around the pin. So, it depends whether there is already a twist on the threads or not whether you add 2 twists or if just one more twist is needed.
Delightful in every way! Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Love it 😊
Thanks 😁
This is such a fun series!
Thank you I’m glad you are enjoying it!
0:30 Wonderful drawings. You can gently pick the label out with a craft knife. I do it on all my clothing, I just can't deal with labels on my skin 😂
To be honest, that whole jumper irritates. When I wear it, I have to make sure I’m wearing long sleeves underneath. Haha. I only keep it because it’s a memory of my late husband from our honeymoon.
@@madebyloraAye, it's hard parting with things if they hold a memory, especially if it's a memory of a late loved one. I've got old receipts that I've kept. One of them the print has completely faded. Good job I didn't want to return the item haha
Lovely drawings 😊
Thank you!
How do you finish a piece?
@@susanlee7341 It varies depending on the design, but most patterns that I’ve done so far have ended with knots. I make the threads longer, but still attached to the bobbins and tie 3 knots with each pair of bobbins. Then cut off all the bobbins leaving long-ish threads. If the ends need to be hidden, I use a sewing needle to thread the loose ends into the bottom edge of the lace, just a few tiny stitches, and then trim off the ends close to the lace so the ends aren’t visible. (The knotting is done while it’s still on the pillow and the sewing is done after it’s taken off the pillow). Sometimes if there are lots of ends, it can end up looking a bit bulky with the knots and the weaved in ends, but I’m still working on that. Some designs are easier to hide the ends than others. Some people say you should leave the lace pinned to the pillow for 24 hours before you take it off, but to be honest, I never have the patience for that, I always want to see it straight away. And unless it’s a small piece that’s been done all in one day, most of the lace will have already been pinned a long time already anyway! (That’s my impatient logic for taking the lace off the pillow as soon as it’s finished haha). I hope that helps.
Hi 👋 watching from tucson arizona in the 🏜 desert. I sketch outside a lot when I travel - but only in the winter! Summer is way too hot (even now in October it's 105F - 40C) - so instead i watch art kit videos😅
Do you take lots of photos in the winter so that you can sketch them in the summer? I think 40c is about the hottest it’s ever been in England. To be honest I struggle if it gets much above 20c! Haha
I love the backpack background. Less control might be good for you sometimes? :)
Thank you!
I love this idea so much!!!
Thank you
This is just brilliant! I'm going to wait for to hear the whole story at the end.
Thank you! I hope the story will be worth the wait haha
VERY impressive looks like illustrations straight out of a story book!!❤
Thank you! Several people have described my sketches as "illustrative" in the past so it seems appropriate to put them in a story haha
This is fantastic, thank you for sharing 🧡
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it
Such a neat idea to make this little book. It will be interesting to see if you become a more confident and creative writer after thirty days. I have heard authors say they greatly benefit from the discipline of writing at least a page a day.
I'm actually enjoying the writing more than expected (although a few of the later prompt words will be a challenge to make fit). I've had a cut out some stuff out because I was getting a bit carried away with some of the chapters and had to rein it in a bit... It's still supposed to be mostly about the sketches haha
Thank you very nice demonstration
Thank you so much!
This was a fantastic video. I have watched others and was so confused. Watched yours and now I totally understand these 2 basic stitches. Thank you. You are an excellent instructor. You made it simple and concise. ☺️💕🧵
Aww thank you so much! It makes me really happy to see your comment! Thank you!
This is the best I've seen too, really informative.
Aww thank you. That means a lot!
Hi Laura! New subscriber here 💖 if you like smaller fountain pens, you should definitely try the ‘Kaweco Sport’ comes in multiple nib sizes and a huge range of colours! Happy inktober✍️🖋️
Thank you! At the moment I’m trying not to buy too many different tools because I find the simpler I keep my supplies, the more likely I am to actually use them. But next time I’m thinking about buying another pen, I will definitely check out your recommendation. At the moment I’m content with just having one, but maybe in the future I will want to have another pen ready to use with a different colour ink in it. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Lovely! Thanks for
Hi, Lora! Sorry to disappoint you or rather sorry to prove you right: I too am telling a story for Inktober. However, not the way you are. The thing that drew me most to improving my drawing skills has always been visual story-telling, like they say "a picture tells more than a thousand words". When I made up my mind what to do with this year's Inktober prompts, gradually a story started to develop in my mind. Since the pictures are going to be rather complex, I'll combine prompts, like discover and boots, binoculars and trek (which I have changed to "track" in order to fit the story), passport and hike, and sun, nomadic and snack (so far). I'm working mostly A4 to have enough room for the story and in ink and watercolour (I believe that colour also carries message) and have already started when the prompts were released. However, I don't think I will finish by October 31. But that is totally okay. I'm very much enjoying myself and learning a lot! Wishing you too a wonderful, inspired and successful Inktober!
How are you getting on with your story? It sounds very ambitious! I’m keeping mine pretty small and simple but I’m enjoying it so far. There have been a couple of occasions when I wished I had allowed myself some colour too, but it’s pushing me to think more about how I “colour” the different shades just with black ink.
Sounds delightful. I'm looking forward to sharing the fun.
Hope you enjoy it!
You talked me into doing a story with the prompts. I like to do creative writing and art. This is both hobbies. How fun is that. 🎉
It’s always nice when it’s possible to combine multiple hobbies into one project!
I like your story idea and anyone else is a copycat 😂. I loved your last 2 years of Inktober, so am looking forward to seeing what you come up with this year. I’m going to attempt a “version” of Inktober for the first time, but I’m going to loosely use Leslie Stroz’ approach (House-tober) and have come up with my own categories and I’ll try to draw/ink daily… so not “classic” Inktober, just daily practice that happens to be in October 😊.
Thank you! I've just written a draft of a Prologue and chapter 1 haha. I still haven't painted my last September image, but going to do that next. I loved Leslie Stroz houses! I hope you have fun doing your own version of it!
It’s so fun when a challenge has you so excited that you want to start early… adding the storyline component should certainly keep it interesting!!
@VictorianStudio I was just in the middle of replying to you when the premiere ended and my message disappeared haha. Are you doing your own list this year? or are you following a different list?
I really enjoyed your no-nonsense methods for bookbinding, especially for beginners. I made maybe 100+ books after being so annoyed with the cost of watercolor sketchbooks. I wish I'd seen this video for my first few books. Other YT'ers make very good tutorials, too, but most were so complicated that it seemed daunting. Not yours. Beginner friendly yet gorgeous results. Well done, Lora.
First of all, thank you for taking the time to watch my video when you already do book binding. Thank you so much for your kind comment, it means a lot!
You are lovely …I can’t wait to make a couple of books…you are a great instructor, the tutorial is explained and shown perfectly, thank you so much…
Thank you so much! I'm so pleased you found this helpful. I hope you will enjoy making your own books as much as I do!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. You make it look so simple. I have made a couple but much prefer how you have done yours. And mine didn’t have covers but will definitely have some now. 😊
Ah thank you, I'm so glad you found this helpful!
With all this beautiful effort i hope the paper was acid free. :)
Maybe you already know but packing paper won’t be acid free and won’t be archival longterm. If you want your sketches to last, it helps to use acid free paper at the very least. Any paper that’s acid free will say so. :) Best to you.
I didn't think about that at the time when I made it. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before the sketches are affected.
With the sweatbands make sure all the pigments you’re using are nontoxic. 🌸
Yes that is a good point. I don't use the band very often, but it's a good precaution to keep in mind.
QUESTION Lori, do you have a video about how you made your little notebook with the Amazon paper? I’d love to make one. Thanks,
I've not got a tutorial for using the Amazon brown paper, but the making process was the same. The only difference is that I decided to rip the pages instead of cutting them. It seemed to suit the book because the paper was a bit crumpled. I held a ruler down on the paper when I ripped the paper so that the ripped edges weren't too scruffy. I've also made a note to show that technique in a future video too.
@@madebylora thanks for the info; I’m going to try making that next. I made a watercolor book with your tutorial and it was great. I had all the stuff. I plan to do Inktober with it! Thanks for opening this up for me!
That's so lovely to hear! I'm so glad it's been helpful.
Really great toot! I’m sure I won’t have any problems because you answered all my questions as you went along. I noticed that you have a pocket in the back of your blue sketchbook and wondered if you can do a demo about adding pockets in the back. I love the expanding ones in Moleskine journals and keep a ruler and other items in there. PS I’m from the US and I love hearing the rain on your roof! We live in an area where most of the weather goes around us!😢😂
Thank you! I've made myself a note to include a pocket in my next tutorial.
@@madebylora that’s great; looking forward to it. You might consider using colored thread in your next book. I think it might show up better in the video. You did a great job though. Sarah
A couple of people have suggested coloured thread. Normally I do white because I sometimes like to sketch across the join between pages. I'll be making a book for Inktober this year, so I'll film that and I will use coloured thread. I won't be finishing the binding and the cover until the end of the month, so keep an eye out for it at end of October/start of November.
Great ideas! I have that little pencil case and love it! I love your little altoids kit with the phone ring! Genius! I also like your thought process.
Thank you 😊
Thank you for going through all the trouble to show us your book-binding procedure. I will follow your tutorial for sure. You have such an encouraging way to show and explain things. Thank you. 💐
Thank you so much, I'm glad this was helpful
I'm thrilled to see your bobbin lace videos.
Thank you!
This is so beautiful. Your parents are so blessed to have you. Ohhh, working with that gold thread you are amazing! I bet you don't want to work with that again. I sure hope to see a lot more bobbin lace videos from you. Thank you for sharing your talent.🥰
Thank you for your lovely comment. Yes, I'm not in a hurry to use the gold thread again haha
Watching from Manitoba, Canada
19:30 that’s so cool!!! I’m 47 and just to crochet almost a year ago, I still can only do single and one other crochet stitch. But I’ve managed to learn how to work in the back of the stitch or both to kinda mix up my looks lol. And I’ve yet to follow a pattern. I just pick something simple like a scarf, shawl or blanket and wing it lol. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I’ll never do it but I thinks it’s beautiful and the sound is amazing of the bobbins hitting each other. God bless.
I crochet too. Maybe one day I'll get around to doing a crochet video, but I have more ideas for videos than time to do them haha. Thanks for watching my lace video
@@madebylora you’re welcome, they are so mesmerizing to watch. I’ll definitely watch if you crochet. I desperately want to learn more stitches but there are no videos that break it down slow enough for me lol. New sub here.
Hi Lora. I’m watching from northern Alberta in western Canada 🇨🇦. Love your videos and your enthusiasm.
Thank you for watching! It makes me so happy to see when someone watches more than one of my videos! 😁. And an added bonus when I can colour a new area on my world map!
