The Hypocrisy of Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard broke my heart, and not for the reasons you think. Dragon Age has always been a franchise about choice and consequence; so when Bioware abandons this very principle in Veilguard, can we even still call this a Dragon Age game? Or is it just a hypocrisy-laden husk of what Dragon Age once was, a return to Thedas with none of the charm, depth, and excellence of the previous games?

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an action role-playing video game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. The fourth major game in the Dragon Age franchise, The Veilguard is the sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014). Set ten years after Inquisition, the game features new locations in the fictional world of Thedas for the player to explore. The story follows a player character known as Rook who was recruited by Varric Tethras to help him stop Solas, also known as the elven trickster god Fen'Harel, from bringing down the Veil. While disrupting Solas' ritual, they accidentally unleash two imprisoned elven gods - Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain - who then wreak havoc across Thedas with the Blight in an attempt to conquer the world. Rook, supported by companions and various factions, sets out to stop these members of the elven pantheon from achieving their goals. Players control Rook from a third-person perspective and travel to various zones via magical portals known as Eluvians. Veilguard utilizes a hub-and-spoke world design unlike its predecessor's open world design.
The game's development, which began in 2015, has been marked by lengthy delays, several fundamental changes in design, and high staff turnover. The game was announced as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in 2022, and retitled to Dragon Age: The Veilguard in June 2024.
After release Dragon Age: The Veilguard topped Steam charts and broke BioWare's concurrent player record. Dragon Age: The Veilguard received "generally favorable" reviews from critics for its Windows, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 versions according to the review aggregator website Metacritic. OpenCritic determined that 69% of critics recommended the game. Veilguard was also subject to review bombing on Metacritic, with users criticizing the game for being "woke". Some outlets noted that while the user reviews on Metacritic are largely negative, the user reviews of Veilguard on Steam have a "mostly positive" rating. In response, Metacritic emphasized their moderation system which would remove offensive reviews.

Joker 2 Isn't Bad, Actually

Todd Philips’s Joker: Folie a Deux is apparently one of the most hated movies of the year. Everyone is criticizing it for wonky, meaningless musical elements, an aimless story, and boring execution. And while Joker 2 really is a strange movie that seemingly hates its audience, I think it has a lot of very smart themes and impressive meta commentary at play that make this Joaquin Phoenix and Lad...

Zack Snyder just released his most Zack Snyder-y animated series yet, Netflix’s Twilight of the Gods. Zack Snyder brings his trademark violence, gore, cursing, and awkward ‘intimacy’ to Thor, Loki, Odin, and other beloved facets of Norse mythology in a story that mimics both Rebel Moon and Justice League. In this video essay, I go into how Twilight of the Gods basically fits the Snyder mold to ...
The Real Problem with House of the Dragon Season 2
Переглядів 25 тис.4 місяці тому
People dislike season 2 of House of the Dragon because it doesn’t get into the actual meat of this Targaryen civil war, instead opting to push it onwards and onwards. As someone who has read the book (confirming that I am in fact, better than you), I think that the pacing is fine. However, I think some weird characterization choices with Rhaenyra and a few others prevent this season from being ...

Well, one good thing DID come out of veilguard,at least for me: It got me interested in dragon age. I kept seeing discourse about veilguard, and since i was interested in trying out more rpg games other than BG3 i gave inquisition a shot while waiting. I'm having a BLAST so far and I'm planning to play the previous games as well when i have the chance. I see a constant problem with veilguard:it seems Bioware prefered to prioritize graphics and environment over story and immersion, thinking it would make up for everything else wrong in their game, but even though a very old game can STILL be enjoyable decades later because of its storytelling and worldbuilding,a modern game that just looks good can still be boring or even atrocious if the writing is ass, which is clearly veilguard's case. I think it's best for our mental stability to declare veilguard not canon

The Varric twist is a cheat because he narrates various points throughout the game. It's one thing for characters to lie to characters, but it's another for the game to lie directly to the audience. Who was Varric supposed be narrating to all those times? Naturally, one would expect that he's telling some audience after the events of the game like in DA2 with Cassandra. But obviously that can't be the case if Solas was pretending to be him the whole time. So since Solas was playing as Varric, then was he telling the story of the Veilguard to the members of the Veilguard while they are actively participating in the story and thus already know what's happening? That's just stupid. Patrick Weekes taking over as lead writer after David Gaider left is one of the worst things to ever happen to BioWare. Edit: And so Varric is still narrating after the revelation? HOW?

It's just another example of the bad writing in this game. They do this more than once. If Taash dies Isobela then calls Taash 'she' when talking to Rook about Taash's death and life. After the companion questline and even the Bharv scene the writers go and misgender their own character. It's like they completely forgot all of their prior writing. It feels like one part of the game was written by a group of writers who were completely unaware of other parts of the story. I know fanfic writers who do a better job. At least they can recall and keep up with their plotlines and character development.

    • @BradTheAmerican
      @BradTheAmerican 2 години тому

@@MjollTheLioness-o4y Speaking of Taash, there's something funny about the gender non-conforming character calling a guy stupid for referring to himself as the "Dragon King" because according to Taash, dragons would only be led by a queen. I'd have figured that out of anyone in the cast, that Taash would be one to not think that way. Feels rather ironic, or maybe a double standard. I guess Patrick Weekes lacked self-awareness when writing their self insert. Also, BioWare has actually hired fanfiction writers, but Idk how prominently they played a part in writing. At least with Mass Effect Andromeda, there was a dev interview where someone said they were surprised to be hired since fanfiction had been their only writing credit up to that point.

While I understand the broad narrative story arcs and the themes that the director was going for; the execution was utterly terrible. Mixed with a musical that wanted to have its cake and eat it too (tap onto the fantastical elements but also wanted to deliver some rough and raw singing moments that confused the audience); we dont see enough of an inner turmoil that fully develops the fear that he should fear this caricature hes created and it will come for him while at the same time indulging in as a form of pity and love. Couldve served as an excellent case study on misguided and mentally ill folks who took the wrong path in life but alas the director finally strips any shred of dignity awat from the character without any proper attempt at developing him and finally kills him off. Clockwork Orange/ Taxi Driver (which are the films i thought of watching these 2 films) are superior movies that depict these themes that the director attempts to hit and fails terribly. Both directors expertly walked the line of giving some humanity/ objectivity to the character presented while depicting the horrific acts as is. Seems the director despises the character he created and didnt made an attempt to empathise with the character unlike his first film. Personally, I felt the first film did not have a sufficient counter / anti-thesis to the Joker's "pity party" and "sob stories" (Robert De Niro's character was insufficient for that) which prolly led to people overly praising and relating a little too much to the character. But the second film completely swings in the direction of what i had wanted and completely strips any dignity or semblance of character and humanity in the character. It is very perplexing for me... There are some really great ideas and some well executed moments in this movie but unfortunately the execution and im sure his hatred for this caricature just presented a confused mess

The begging wasn't bad but it doesn't build up to anything and the film ends up spending most of its time in a jail and a court with no real payoff. Also the implication that the "real" Joker is just some kind of copycat doesn't feel like the Joker. Even without the Joker branding the story is simply uninteresting and the musical segments slowly become more and more tacked on the more you watch the film. It's just my opinion but this film never truly escaped the 1st acts setup. (P.S I wrote this before watching the video so I could compare my thoughts and feelings afterwards)

Joker 2 Was for me a chore to sit through, but that's why it made it so much more fitting on its meta aspects and social commentary. I don't think that it was made bad on purpose, but I think because of that it fits themes much better. Just like Jokers fans in the movie leave Arthur after he doesn't fulfill their hateful persona anymore (especially Harley, since for her it is just a game she plays with a rich family background she can return to), many fans of the first movie left the movie theater since the figure of Joker hit deconstructed back to a pathetic, sick man - to me the utter disappointment in "Joker" is not just felt on screen in the characters, but in the actual audience as well. If it was a good movie and the audience enjoyed it, you wouldn't have the disappointment only on a narrative level. But with the audience living through it, being bored, angry at and disappointed of the character of the Joker, the deconstruction is on a whole nother level. All short comings that make the movie a bad one like the boring musical elements, long scenes, weird narrative structure regarding tensions exemplify this impression. For example that the musical scenes are so flat, feel half hearted and are devoid of additional meaning and feel disjointed from the rest, shows to me that Arthur only sees them as a form of escapism: He is not convinced of the Joker persona's fantasy and only sees it as a tool for the escape from his reality, and not because he truly believes in this fantasy.

The two sides of the coin: the lowest common denominator appreciates simple to understand characters, simple story. Critics expect more experimentation, more complexity, more depth. The first two Avatar movies do a decent job of riding that line, putting simple characters and simple story in a complex, exotic setting. The further Avatar sequels will have a hurdle similar to the MCU and Star Wars; fairly simple characters and fairly simple story in a universe that feels less and less fantastic with each additional film.

The answers are NO and NO. An RPG where you can't agree or disagree is no game at all, it's just preaching. As for it being a dragon age game, it most definitely is not. With all those improvements in graphics, these women can't even hold a candle to those of past games. Elven women at the very least are meant to be feminine and look what we got. The so called men are now the ones that look feminine. What a joke, sad times we live in.

Hi, I dunno who you are. This is the first video I saw from you. I was looking for what people were saying about this movie since I just finished watching ita nd wanted to seek out a positive video about it. I heard the vague sentiments of people, but I specifically avoided it. The only things I knew going in was that it was a musical, and that lady gaga was Harley. I just finished watching it, and I was captivated. The songs were...okay to bad. "I'm the Joker" was about the only good song. The video kinda reflected my thoughts most of that I was sitting with, anyway! The only thing I grow tired of is when people use anarchy as a synonym for "chaotic lawlessness/violence". Anarchy is a rich political ideology going back 200 years based on not being hierarchies, mutual aid, egalitarianism, voluntary association, and other stuff.

Nah Twilight of the Gods was a legit banger, your opinion is by far your own alone. Everything about it was solid, i'd give it an 8.6/10.

I would have been so much happier if this game was just called veil guard and had nothing to do with Dragon age

I don't know why i feel like this movie was really made "bad" on purpose

I haven't seen someone completely encapsulate how I feel about Veilguard so effectively before. This franchise is my favourite piece of media - I have read every comic, book, short story; consumed everything they have ever released. I don't hate this game, but it broke my heart. Thank you for putting it all so eloquently into words so I didn't have to.

You know, for so many fanboys out their. They really do not understand who the joker is. The joker a Man who lost all grasp on reality who only cares about playing a game. Trying to one up batman who in the end of the day punches him into submission. Only for him to figure out a way to escape and do it all over again. Because he knows batman wont kill him, And he knows batman is a great guy to play against. This is why when batman dies, He gives up. The game is over, The joker cease to exist. to the point that like in the Dark knight returns, the joker is pretty much in a comma waiting for batman to return. Having no reason to live to begin with. Flek on the other hand isn't the joker. Hell even the idea of the joker movement isn't about the joker from the comics. As the joker Dose not give two shits about civil liberties or making a better society. Hell the guy is willing to burn down gotham if Just so he can get punched by batman. This story is about a man who was thrustered into a position he didn't create. Hell even in the ordinal joker, He didn't create the movement. Hell he wasn't even dressed up like a clown when he got shot. Someone just decided to Call the mayor a clown and it stuck. Thus when they gave a name to it and labeled him as the joker. It was out of pure coincidence. Compare this to the comic book adaptation where his skin was bleached white. An event that happened at the end of the worst day of his life. Where not only did his wife and unborn child get killed by an accident. His get rich quick scheme ended in failure which not only labeled him as a villain. But led to him nearly dying an acid. Yet this is not the joker... this is aurther..

I agree with most of your assessments. Long time DA fan, MASSIVELY disappointed by this game in so many ways. My one disagreement is on the Viper being blighted though. MASSIVE SPOILER HERE The Viper is *The Imperial Divine*, so when he says he's got some tricks up his sleeve to delay the effects, I believe him. HOWEVER, I thought that was going to buy enough time for something interesting to happen with it in Act 3, but it literally never gets mentioned again. THE IMPERIAL DIVINE IS BLIGHTED and it never gives a fuck? There were a thousand times in act 1 where I was ELATED at something, not for its raw excellence, but because it felt like the beginning of a true Bioware scale incredible storyline. The teaser of complexity and grandness. The Viper's being secretly the fucking imperial divine starting slave rebellions, the dwarf origin story, return of the griffons, mistreated elves could be uniting under their gods, offhand comments about how nevarran skeletons cannot be blighted teasing the possibility of an allied skeleton army, etc. Weisshaupt was so epic! I thought act 2 would expound on the great stuff, have more awesome interesting content like Regrets of the Dread Wolf. It instead felt like... Game of thrones season 8, or Amazon spending $1b on the beautiful settings and sfx of Rings of Power. Dwarves got cut for time, Taash's entire personality becomes about an identity instead of expounding on how she knows dragons by dietary habits and tracks them so well, the Crows change from being Mossad or Black Cube to some cheerful freedom fighters. The game was as beautiful as the writers' room was neglected 😩

Feels like I am watching a superhero movie. And not even one of the good ones. Like Green Lantern, or something along those lines. I am not touching this game, not in a million years.
