UFC 1 and JKD

Grappling requires body feel and awareness. In JKD, we still work to hit even when in grappling range. The goal is to destroy our opponent. We aren't concerned with points or position. It is brutal and vicious and fast. We need Stability, not position. Why? So we can hit. Royce Gracie demonstrated the effectiveness of striking when you go to the ground in UFC 1. His match against Ken Shamrock w...

This is just one more little thing that could allow you to win the day.

    • @evolutionJKD

      Generally, if you are t gagging on it and it isn’t rubbing into your jaw or cheek, then it’s ok. If it is, you can trim it (just a little at a time!!) with some scissors. You might need to put it in hot water again just to smooth out rough edges. It’s why I recommend two, so if you mess up one you have another ready to work on right away. All else fails, go see your dentist.

    Bruce Lee officially only certified 3 ppl to teach JKD and that is not discussed much or emphasized enough if you're talking about lineage. The only three ppl that were personally certified by Bruce Lee himself were Taky Kimura, James Lee, and Dan Inosanto. And its not like Bruce ran out of time but rather these were the ppl he chose to certify and even requested if possible not to continue teaching JKD.

    • @evolutionJKD
      @evolutionJKD Місяць тому

      This is a common arguement used by many. I would put out there for consideration the following items. I know more than a few "certified" instructors in JKD and other arts who aren't very skilled in martial arts or teaching. A lot of successful ones are great at teaching but not so great at the martial arts part. Bruce Lee died at a very young age. Skill and knowledge are not directly tied to a "certification" to teach. I would suggest "publicly acknowleded as instructors" instead of certified. Most of the first generation people refer to what they got as individuals from Bruce. That is what they share. It has just fallen under the umbrella of "Jeet Kune Do". Lastly, what a waste it would be if we ignored the knowledge of all the others just because they had hours and hours of training alongside the "certified" people but no piece of paper.

      @@evolutionJKD Fair enough, I was just bringing up the "Certified by Bruce Lee" because I thought it was relevant to the lineage you were speaking of. Wasn't a knock to the ones he trained and didn't certify but there was always that misconception rather than argument about it. I got to train in JKD for a few months in Ottawa, Canada and had to stop due to personal reasons and now I can only learn on UA-cam and its great you can clarify or educate me better so at the end of the day I can hack away at the inessentials. Does it help you understand how to better apply yourself to a combative situation? I'm way overdue to post something. Anything you'd like to see in a video? Who did you train with in Ottawa? The three of us demostrate a vaste difference of what can be taken away from an individual. There are a lot of things that are similar between us, but there is a big differnece in how we express that information.

    If people want to learn real JKD, let them learn from the following: Bruce Lee, Ted Wong, Tim Tackett, Chris Kent and Joe Lewis. Those people are the best. They can get books and buy online courses from them. They're the best. Oh, I forgot let them get the JKD Process very good. I'll say nowadays, there isn't really anybody that teaches JKD the Bruce Lee way. I prefer the old people. They're unbeatable.

      Did you train with someone or just online? And if you're going to train online, why not watch some of my other videos. Have you checked out any of my other videos? What about my online course through teachable? Chris is solid. I'm not a big fan of Tim or Ted, but it would be better to train with someone qualified from their lineage. They would be far better than a book.

If you don't have anyone to train with or are looking to explore other options, then I think they are super worth it. It's also a fantastic way to see a different point of view. I have an instructional video that is great for someone like you. It won't make you be a master, but it will give you incredible insight on JKD movement and help you explore the movements. There is quite a lot packed into the each section. If you haven't already, look at the Whiteboard videos. There is a discount in the description!! I think JKD was far frm complete being bruce lee’s grappling insights was not adapted into it. That also explains why it took him so long to develop the art n he was nvr confident to release its work bcs he knew it was thoroughly incomplete. There were evidences showing he learned judo n bjj frm his frens n did osoto gari throws but i think he had little understanding on adapting it to a framework for it to be part of JKD. Sadly we missed one of the greatest martial artists of our time at a young age. He could’ve pioneered the first ever guide to mixing and balancing the martial arts. But instead JKD only go as far as interceptions n efficient strikes n steps

    • @evolutionJKD
      @evolutionJKD 2 місяці тому

      Bruce had a limited grappling background. My understanding is that he left a great deal of that exploration to Larry Hartsell. What I've seen of that is more just basic grappling. I don't consider that a good representation of how to apply the stand up JKD to a grappling environment. This is something, as a wrestler, that I worked on with Jerry Poteet and have continued to expand upon over the past decade or so. Everything that is done from standing should be applied on the ground. My school is named "Evolution" for a reason. We should be building upon what we inherited from others. So many don't. Like you said, Bruce died way to early and we lost so much of what he could have contributed. That leaves it to us to take up what he did forge and take it further. Then pass that on to another generation to take it even further. It should be that future generations are stronger than the generation before, but sadly this is rarely the case amongst JKD people.

    I like your break-down. I started studying Tao and Chinese Buddhism as a young teenager. Never much of a fighter, more of a philosopher. Of course, I read many of Lee's books, have seen his movies hundreds of times, but the one thing that sticks out to me is the scene in ENTER when he brings up 'the art of fighting without fighting'. Outwit your opponent before any blows are thrown. Certainly, JKD is street fighting 'striping away the unnecessary' and one may not have the opportunity to do so (fighting without fighting) , yet often one may have it and can use it, if one isn't a show-off or is more concerned with fighting than teaching a student the art. I guess I'm saying use every weapon available and be as practical as possible to achieve your goal with minimum harm. The ultimate goal is to express Tao. If you see possibly harm to yourself, do what you must and that is all. Much respect, Sifu! I have much to learn from you.

    the Reaction Zone reminds me of the trapping zone where one moves into RAT, i like the idea of using this space to juke but am weary of losing power due to proximity and then receiving many elbows. How do you keep your hitting power, is there an exercise that would help? also when should we use PIA over a RAT?

    • @evolutionJKD
      @evolutionJKD Місяць тому

      You would apply the strategy of PIA to an initial movement. That is assuming you are able to square off against an opponent. Progressive Indirect Attack (PIA) is a strategy that is applied to draw out an opponent's counter, whether that is defensive or offensive. It is an advanced strategy to create an opening against an opponent. After scoring a hit then you straight blast. I had to look up Paul's RAT program. Paul uses a "straight blast" as a transition from what I can see. Then goes into a big finish move. There is no power in his straight blast. Looks more like a distraction to close distance. Learn to do straight blast properly.

So, if you can't understand what is being presented in a Short, then you should either gain more knowledge or look at what else is being shown before making a comment. And be respectful. Whether you were in a wrestling room, on a BJJ mat, in a ring, or in a martial arts school...that kind of lip would get you wrecked.

      When looking at pretty much any of the "drilling" done in BJJ, you could say the same things. You seem to be applying a full speed, full intensity mindset to something that is quite obviously a drill. You're also not looking at the video with any sense of discovering something or expanding your knowledge base. Maybe it's just a deficiency in your training that you've never been hit by someone who can generate power in close quarters. They aren't normally found in sport, so it's understandable. BJJ black belt? So what? I know plenty of people who are BJJ black belts. Kind of a thing when you train for over a decade in Los Angeles. I am curious about who your coach is and who you gave you your black belt. You listed on a school page somewhere? When did you start training? I'm pretty easy to look up.

      100% agree that it will look different from person to person. However, it should still be efficient and powerful and applicable against other skilled martial artists. Differences should be right or left lead, choice of striking point, preferred target area, etc. Ultimately, all martial arts should lead to the same place. Either way, it's not a big deal to me. If you want to go fanboy someone, then do so. I'm more interested in people wanting to learn legitimate martial arts. And then do so to a higher level. Kind of thing that martial artists do.

    I want to be a boxer 1st, and learn to implement JKD with my skills

      My suggestion is to really focus on the boxing first. Then we you are at a competent level, begin training with a good instructor. JKD is a refinement of martial skill. I do know someone who did this with kickboxing and did extremely well on an international level! The JKD approach to kickboxing gave them an edge.

    Do you still have to see if it fits before you boil it if it’s a flavored one like kool aid

      Some of my students have used the flavored ones. Directions should be the same, but be sure to read them for your specific mouthguard. I like to put it in before softening it just to get an idea of how much I can let it shrink. You can go too far! I'd suggest doing it a few times to get the best fit.

      Again…..it literally says JKD in the video presented. He still has JKD videos posted, but don’t waste time watching them. Unless you just watch it for comedy.

    Is that a starter brand ?and what stores sell them ? Would it be in the athletic department ??.....

    • @evolutionJKD
      @evolutionJKD 6 місяців тому

      You can find them in the athletic section of most box stores like Walmart or Target. A sports store will definitely have them. Ask an employee. Shouldn’t be that expensive. If you’re going to spend big money, you might as well go to your dentist.
