Welcome to Taipei News. I'm Kenneth Chi. Thanks for joining us.
Let’s start with some great celebration.
1) Guanghua Digital Plaza (GDP) is turning 16!
Guanghua Digital Plaza is celebrating its 16th anniversary! Over the years, the plaza has continuously improved its facilities and activities. This year, the celebration features the latest technologies from top brands.
Guanghua Market, also known as Bade Shopping District, is the largest electronics and computer shopping center in Taiwan. Originally opened in 1973 under Guanghua Bridge between Bade Road and Civic Boulevard in Taipei City, the market moved to its current location in 2008. Today, Guanghua Plaza is a techie's paradise, offering everything digital--from cameras, laptops, and phones to TVs, miscellaneous IT gadgets, and repair services.
From July 20 to August 11, spend NT$1,000 for a chance to win prizes, including an Acer Swift Go 14 laptop worth NT$34,900. Enjoy special promotions and receive a free energy drink with any purchase.
For more details, visit the Guanghua Online Mall at www.gh3c.com.tw/ or their Facebook page at gwmall/.
2) Fireworks Light Up Taipei Summer Festival in Dadaocheng
Haven't been to the Taipei Summer Festival at Dadaocheng Wharf yet? Don't miss your last chance this year! On August 10th, there will be a final fireworks show lasting for 480 seconds.
The annual Taipei Dadaocheng Summer Festival is the place to be for a spectacular fireworks display and live music at night. This year's final show starts at 8 PM on August 10th, coinciding with the Qixi Festival, also Chinese Valentine's Day.
Visitors can also enjoy an open-air market with 500 meters of lighting and art installations along the riverbank, perfect for evening strolls and photo opportunities.
Taipei traffic police urge everyone to use public transportation, like the MRT or buses, as traffic controls will be implemented starting at 7 PM.
Chinese Valentine's Day, also known as Qixi Festival, is celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, usually in August. This festival originates from the romantic legend of two lovers, Zhinü and Niulang, who can only meet once a year.
3) Photo Exhibitons of First ever Department store in Taipei 菊元百貨(Kikumoto)照片展
Interested in learning more about Taipei's history? Visit Kikumoto Department Store, the first-ever department store in Taiwan. The "Bringing Back Kikumoto" project will feature a special historical photo exhibition on the second floor of what is now the Cathay United Bank Building, allowing more citizens to explore Taipei's urban history.
Built in 1932 during the Japanese colonial era, Kikumoto was a seven-story building and the second tallest in Taiwan at the time . It also housed the first commercial elevators in Taiwan. Despite several ownership changes, it remained a department store until 1979.
City Mayor Jiang Wan-An said, “Kikumoto Department Store isn't just in the busy central district of Taipei; it has seen the city's growth and holds many memories for the older generation and long-time residents.”
The photo exhibition is on the second floor at No. 150 Po-Ai Road and is open every Thursday to Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM. It will run until January 5, 2025.
4) 2024 Taipei Marathon Registation Opens
Lastly, here’s some sports news for you.
Registration is now open for the Taipei Marathon. Started in 1986, it’s Taiwan’s largest urban marathon. It’s recognized by the World Athletics Federation and is the first marathon globally to receive carbon footprint certification from the British Standards Institution. This is one of Taipei’s top international sports events. Don’t miss out-sign up early to secure your spot. For more details, visit: www.taipeicitymarathon.com.
That was Taipei News for the week.

Lastly, the city government is hoping to add thirty-three new disability service facilities in the next four years. 2. Our next piece of news concerns biogas and its role in helping the city generate Green Power and reduce Carbon emissions. The Taipei City Government is utilizing biogas from the Baili Sewage Treatment Plant 八里污水廠 for power generation. If you spot six giant eggs on the left bank of Bali, do not mistake them for public art installations for the Shisanhang Museum In fact, these massive installments are six egg-shaped digesters, where sludge goes through anaerobic digestion to achieve sludge decomposition and reduction. In addition to the digesters, the Bali Sewage treatment plant hopes to install a 600KW biogas generator, making it the first civilian public sewage treatment plant in the country to do so. Biogas generators feature higher power generation efficiency, and are capable of adapting to varying characteristics of sewage biogas, ensuring maximum energy output. Additionally, the wasted heat from power generation will be recycled and used to maintain the temperature of the egg-shaped digesters through heat exchangers. 3. On a lighter note, if you enjoy collecting special items and public transportation, we have something just for you with Metro Taipei! In order to answer your question at 15 minutes: Germany ahead of the Netherlands and Sweden purchases most from Taiwan, because Taiwan is simply an essential part of the German supply chain. Besides of that a lot of Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese have an overwhelming positive attitude due to history. Jiang Wei-Guo received his military education in Germany during World War Two. Japanese hosted a lot of German POWs who thought to the very end to defend Germany’s only colony against Japan, which impressed Japanese. Also during the Nanjing massacre a German businessman hidden a lot of Chinese against Japanese soldiers. Asian never figured out what the difference between Ayran and Jewish Germans is.

Hello, this is Taipei News! I’m Sydney Weng, your host for the English News Segment this week at the Taipei Broadcasting Station! First off, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s CDC, enterovirus cases have reached a 10-year high this year, with the peak expected between late May and mid-June. To protect the health rights of vulnerable children in Taipei, the city government will fully subsidize vaccination costs for Enterovirus 71, starting June 17. Children who are two to six months old, and meet the criteria for the City’s Category 2 Medical subsidies, along with children housed by the Harmony Home Association are eligible to apply for free Enterovirus vaccinations. This initiative is estimated to benefit around 800 children, especially when the costs for the vaccine is relatively high. A full two-dose treatment will cost more than 8000 NTD, which can be a huge burden for families with younger children. Mayor Chiang Wan An stated: Hopefully, by offering people more access to medical resources, we can ease the burden on caregivers.

It is suggested that among the 250,000 elderly residents who have not yet been vaccinated, a single dose of the 13-valent should be sufficient, followed by a second dose of the 23-valent vaccine after a year. For those who have already received the 23-valent vaccine, we recommend getting the 13-valent vaccine after twelve months. In addition, high-risk individuals should shorten the interval between vaccines if they’ve already received the 13-valent or 15-valent vaccine. For further details on how to schedule and plan your vaccines safely, please visit the Taipei Health Bureau website or consult with a health professional before proceeding. 4.
