It takes some work to realize that He doesn't want me to be afraid of Him in order to obey Him. We separate ourselves from God as we separate ourselves from His creation. So we reunite with God through forgiving others. Then we know He doesn't see us as guilty and worthy of punishment. I disagree with "God doesn't bowl you over, he knocks". I selfishly asked God for something one time and received exactly what I had wished him to do. This is coming from a former atheist.
