      @@BlueSapphyre that’s correct. StarCraft is the first game to use a deck-building mechanic as a small part of the game, however Dominion is the first true deck building game. Hm, interesting video, but I'm not sure I 100% agree. Most importantly I'd like to ask if everything can be a cozy game for someone, then what *isn't* a cozy game? Does it at that rate not just become a synonym for enjoyable, which is kind of a baseline of games? (Except for some experimental pieces I guess) I get the talking point of "more mechanics other than farming can be cozy", but then I also wonder what is the core essence of cozy that has to be preserved for it to be a useful term.

  • @Yimo92
    @Yimo92 12 днів тому

    Just because you cant exactly pinpoint what defines cozy games objectively, doesnt mean people don't have a general understanding what they mean, using that term. The term gets used, and people understand what others mean. That's all there is to it, and all that's needed to justify using the term. I'm literally looking for stuff invoking this feeling so using this term helps me weed out stuff that definetly doesnt fit that term. It's roughly synonymous with "calming", but that gets less used so i use the former And people that might use that term for stuff like Darkest Dungeon, Thumper or high level Osu! maps or competative Gameplay of Shooters or MOBAs just misuse the term. Again, just because there is some wiggle room regarding what counts and what doesn't, doesn't mean every gaming category and genre is invalid.

  • @buteverybodycallsmegiorgio
    @buteverybodycallsmegiorgio 13 днів тому

    These types of videos are always weird to me. I appreciate questioning the status quo, however the label "cozy" is there to do what all labels do: group a game into a category of similar games. If I want to know what type a specific game is and someone says "cozy", I know it won't be Elden Ring. You go on to say "play the games you want to play, not because of some label" .... homie, I have no time to play a bunch of games until I find one I like - I trust a few people to have similar tastes to mine, and when they say "cozy", I know they're using it like I do. Regardless of whether gaming journalism uses them properly or not, that's what labels are for: to facilitate access by allocating instances to their appropriate categories. Accept that it is a somewhat subjective tool, and navigate accordingly.

    I dont want to repeat something that others have said already but you're taking it too literal. If we applied your same logic to horror games; just because it's scary for me and not for you doesn't exclude the game from the horror genre. Yes the formula may be reused too much, but the term and it's definition are fine.

    Cozy is literally the genre name. It refers to games with no fail states, lack of time pressure, and no combat. While there are valid arguments against the lack of innovation in the genre, it has nothing to do with the genre name. Complaining about the use of the word is so pedantic.

  • @magicalnoodles

    By definition, every single game that exists should be defined as cozy by at least a notable percentage of the playerbase. If there is ever a game that no one finds comfort in, then that game should not even exist. After all, why play a game if you're not immersed, comforted or otherwise interested in the game? The fact that the cozy genre popped up means that there are many games out there that too few people find interesting or engagning, yet they proceed to play them. I think that this phenomenon came about due to the overwhelming amount of soulless live service games, along with all the AAA slop that people keep buying for some reason. For many larger game studios, games are not passion projects. Instead, games are being treated as sources of revenue and nothing else. No wonder everyone is seeking out a "cozy" game.

    I really love life-sims. But I honestly never saw or heard the term "cozy" used until the release of Palia, where the community used, and overused the term; completely wearing it out. Palia was and is an unfinished, skeleton of a game made up of apologists and devs unsure what to do with it. Upon release and shortly thereafter, anyone who criticized the game in their discord would catch a BAN for talking negatively about it publicly. I saw many such posts on steam reviews about it around that time. It's exactly the type of cookie-cutter, empty copy-cat you mentioned, but perhaps even the poster child considering there's just.. nothing in the game. I also found it interesting that I never saw the word "Cozy" be used as a genre until after Palia. It's certainly a case-study of a game, haha.

  • @BuioPestato
    @BuioPestato 13 днів тому

    I disagree, cozy is a synonym of chill, and chill means slow paced. You can't say that a shooter is "cozy", it will never be, it may please the player, make him happy and relaxed eventually, but it's main mechanics are fast paced. Some people actually say that Stardew Valley is not a cozy game sometimes, and it's "stressful", and it kind of is till you manage to complete the community center: if you don't get the right crop and the right fish in the right time frame, you will eventually have to wait one more ingame year to do so, and you start stressing to get that done in time. Moreover, the stagnation effect you mention, because a lof of publishers chase some very successful games, and just make ripoffs to cash in on that success story, is valid for all categories of games, the entire gaming industry is made up mostly by projects that chase some famous successful games. Last thing, you didn't mention Minecraft, and that's bad. 😄

    Some people don't want gsmes that take chances or whatever. Some people just want a game that they can decompress with at the end of the day. And yes, as a whole, this can be any type of game for anyone. But the term cozy is typically associated with low stakes games euth aesthetics and some kind of benign gameplay. Like other commenters have said, the term cozy gets the point across. Calling it an epidemic because you find mundane games... mundane? Idk. Your essays are well formatted and easy to listen to. But this is somewhat of a bad take where it feels like you're just trying to make a bigger deal out of something than it is. Or being harsh on people who like this genre because the name of it can be semantic.

      I said in an other comment that I find Hades cozy, and I don't think it is considered a casually cozy game, yet for me (most people won't have such experience with the game) it checks some criteria of cozy games, sometimes better than say Stardew Valley. I've done pretty much everything there is to do in Hades, so when I play it now there are no stakes, it's just the same gameplay loop with the rng bringing some twists to keep things fresh. for me it does the same thing as farming in a cozy game for the aesthetics part I will just say I simp on every single npc of Hades and as far as typical cozy games go, I really enjoy them but as a stressed out, anxiety ridden completionnist, I end up wanting to optimize everything and end up ruining any hope of relaxation in the process, which lead me to quit this kind of game and never go back to them that's probably more what the video is about than trying to undermine cozy gamers' preferences, it's just that more often than not, when a genre gets more intention and people take their own spin on it, the name of the genre holds less and less meaning (just like "soulslike" is used for any difficult game and not just for games that ressemble a from software game)

    I prefer "cozy" to "soulslike," but if you think about it, they're kind of the polar opposites of each other, and neither makes sense and both are subjective. So true. True. U rite! BUT! The problem I have with the term "soulslike" is that it attributes it to the soulsgames, when a fuck ton of games before it were hard as balls too, and it doesn't really describe any unique or particular thing about soulsgames that warrants the term other than the game being fun, yet a hard and stressful game. And calling a game "Cozy" isn't a genre; it's just a term to describe a game, similar to how I would describe a soulsgame or any dark, scary, hard game as "stressful." So yeah, both terms are dumb, but I think "soulslike" is dumber because it provides no clues as to what it is or means, even if you're an avid gamer.

    There's nothing wrong with the term cozy game. People know what it means. Gets the point across. You're taking it too literal. The issues you describe with cozy games is not because they are called "cozy". It's due to lack of innovation in the genre.

    bruh you picked the worse items and cant even understand what acceleate means, I DONT EVEN PLAY THE GAME CAUSE THEY FORCE FED RECOMMEDATIONS OF LESSER CHANNELS, it just accelerates anything with a cooldown 1 extra turn in my understanding and you picked destroyable artifacts when your not even in late game. im not even 10 minutes in and you killed the enjoyment of watching this, ya lack entertainment and game skills think before you click.

    The auto merge perk you had earlier in the run would have worked perfectly with the adding one soldier perk because every turn it will merge a set when you have a set, its great early and when youre going merge builds

    Note, I only played through about half the demo in this video and the story just starts picking up in the latter half of the demo. Definitely worth a look if you are into RPGs with rich stories! Other than that this game ticks a lot of my boxes with the turn based combat, roguelite flow, and 90s anime portrayal. Enjoy!
