M2FM Video - Tom Sulivan presents his On30 version of Kingfield, ME and other layout updates
Tom has been building an On30 version of the SR&RL. His most recent effort is Kingfield on the Franklin and Megantic (F&M) branch. Tom describes how he fit Kingfield into the scene. Tom had been planning to double deck his layout to add Kingfield, but in the end choose a a simpler attempt to expand into the other side of the garage. Follow this link to see Tom's original plan for adding Kingfield: sn2modeler.com/2020/12/06/tom-sullivans-on30-srrl-upper-deck-kdr-again/
There are many books on the SR&RL that go into depth about Kingfield, but if you just want to see the prototype track layout, it is available as an image on this page: sn2modeler.com/2012/04/26/prototype-tackplan-sn2-kdr-part-2-prototype-and-modeling-information/
Additionally, Tom circles updates on other scenes around his layout. He's accomplished quite a lot in 4 years.

I'm working on a build of the Carrabasset depot in it's as built look with the board siding, pre-clapboard. I drafted the structure and did a quick photoshop cardstock model with full color. Alas I come to the interior and need to figure what interior walls there would be. Presently I just have a full length platform and otherwise open interior. I know the chimney was right behind that window and was probably some sort of loft or second floor. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks in advance

Agreed : Much thanx for uploading as you have a great Layout. However; your commentary is at times difficult to decipher as you are sitting in an * Echo-Chamber; * to the point that I have called it quits in trying to go through from start to finish; having to break my viewing into tolerable sections. This also proves that it is not a once-off during the duration of your upload .... What a pity ! 😔

Great model! Just a couple of notes based on the comments in the video. Yes, they are difficult to steer but it’s due to the very low geared steering. As we like to say “steer early, steer often” the tracks and roller chains are adjustable for tension and wear. Yes, there is a differential. A pinion gear on the crankshaft drives a large ring gear. Spider gears transfer drive to the sprocket shafts. The drawing set you used from the Maine Forest & Logging Museum were drawn by the late Bill Lynch. Bill spent over 20 years working to restore the Lombard we have at the Maine Forest & Logging Museum. Sadly he passed away before it’s first steam-up in 2014. The live steam model was built by Chris Rubey and was the subject of a lengthy build series in “Live Steam” magazine. We currently have two steam powered Lombard log haulers in operating condition at the Maine Forest & Logging Museum. Your welcome to stop in and check them out anytime.

I presume your referring to this: www.div8-mcr-nmra.org/site/html/trainshow.html. For me the proximity is not bad, I'll consider it. It is a lot of work for a 5 hour show. Maybe I could bring a smaller set of my modules. A subset of HAVOCRR would also be of consideration.

It took me a few moments to notice that the equipment is actually standard gauge dressed up to look as though it's narrow gauge but it's very very well done and I absolutely understand as to why he did it since true HOn3 equipment is both difficult and costly to get your hands on. I really enjoyed this video since I'm thinking of doing pretty much the same thing but in N scale with a freelanced road of my own.

The club I was in had the privilege to visit this layout the same day we visited the Blissfield club several years ago. I got a real kick out of the partial turntable pit. Hey, why not? What really hit me though is how many structures were the "old" ones I remembered liking as a kid and never got. Looking closer at them I realized the detail of those older kits really isn't bad at all, and since then have been buying them on eBay.

    • @davidkeith8860

Mark, Doug is not the creator of the video. To get an answer to your question you'd have to find a way to ask him. While I've met Doug at his house and at others events, I do not have contact with him. Much of his equipment is stock HO standard gauge.
