    I'm enjoying this series, Tim. I'm resurrecting a '76 Convert I picked up a couple months ago. Hadn't been registered since '89 but only has 4600 miles. So far new tires, ultrasonic cleaning of the carbs, timing, valve adjustment, new kill switch (same as yours), freeing up all the brakes. Didn't have to get new MC's or calipers, was able to get mine all working. I have had it running but not able to ride it yet - soon, weather permitting. Elected to keep the goofy airbox even though I had to get a new junction box. I agree, it is the worst design ever but thought it the most cost effective path forward. Thank heavens for MG Cycle. Mine has a lot of bad chrome too and not the best cosmetics, unfortunately. I picked up a cast flywheel on ebay with the plan on changing eventually, but I'll get it ridable first. I am curious about the holes you drilled in the back end of the stock mufflers - did that make much difference - sound, performance?

    • @tinytim9413
      @tinytim9413 8 місяців тому

      Thanks for the comments. Yes, drilling the holes definitely helped reduce back pressure. I have a set of aftermarket mufflers I'm going to use on it I think. The parts can be expensive for these old Moto Guzzi's, so it's a good idea to keep costs down as they don't bring much money on resale. That air cleaner is the worst and it's not great at keeping dirt out, but if you reuse it you don't have to figure out what to do with the breather tubes. MG does sell a breather can that solves the issue. Anyways good luck with your project. I'll have another video soon. Thanks for watching.

    • @stevew8010
      @stevew8010 8 місяців тому

      @@tinytim9413 Yeah I'm trying to be pretty sensitive to the project costs. That's why I stuck with the stock filter - getting a new junction box was cheaper than buying a good set of pods and a new breather box. It had a K&N element in the box so able to reuse that. Thanks for the tip on the drilling the muffler, I'll give that a go.

      I've seen some of these well cared for with close to 100000 miles. Changing the oil often and keep a check on the valve clearances and you should be good. Voltage Regulators sometimes go and the water pumps can leak but both easily fixed. Buy a water pump kit on ebay. To have on hand. I put a Voltage meter on both ours to keep an eye on the charging output. Cheers

    Hi, your comments about the exhaust made me buy a Laser off a F650CS which I made a link pipe to make it fit. I have put in a bigger pilot and a 140 main, do you remember what size main you fitted please. I've not had a chance to take it out of the town I live because of work but am pretty sure I'm not too far away, although, I think the needle may need to be raised 1 notch, has a small flat spot coming of the pilot circuit. Thanks for this advice because spent 3 years chasing my tail with this bike to discover the main issue was the stock exhaust and particularly the cat. Thanks for the video, very helpful.

    • @tinytim9413
      @tinytim9413 9 місяців тому

      Hi Jim I only went one size up on the main. One size up on the pilot jet and I did raise the needle one notch. It seems crisp and running clean on the plug. A nice gray tan color. It should help you raising the needle with that flat spot. Also very important with that is the float level. It's tricky to set on those 33mm mikuni's but it's got to be spot on. Also with the bigger pilot jet I found I was only a half a turn out more on the pilot adjustment screw than stock. Check the stock sizes of jets on the Max BMW site diagrams. Check that against what you have and my suggestions. These bikes can be quick if you get it right. Thanks Cheers Tim

      @@tinytim9413 I agree Tim , the older round barrel models are the best . I’m thinking about getting a ex police 1000cc Convert , from the videos I’ve seen about Converts, I’m a little worried about the seals in the transmission leaking. I would love to see a Guzzi Convert owners/ buyers guide for the Convert model (hint hint) regards Phil

    • @tinytim9413
      @tinytim9413 10 місяців тому

      @oldtimerman59 Well the older Guzzi's all have some odd issues now and then. My G5 which is the same as the Convert except it has the five speed manual trans had clutch issues. It was shot which is normal wear but it's a job. Also, the transmission input hub I got to replace the worn one was defective right out of the box new requiring a second tear down. I replaced it with another new hub... yup defective from the supplier. A third tear down and finally found a good factory new old stock hub fixed the gear oil leak. Tons of hours in that repair. Anyway my point. The Converts can leak but only after years of use and high mileage. Both my old Converts are not leaking but they could. It's not terribly hard to pull and reseal. Or pull it and have a transmission guy replace the original seals for you. Pretty simple bikes. I take my time and just work at it. It will reward you. :)

    Didn’t realize the f650 has a cat conv. You said it was ‘plugged’. How did you diagnose that? Also the carb and air box. Have you ridden a stock bike? How was it? Thanks for this video. I’m curious about these bikes and this was very helpful.

    • @tinytim9413
      @tinytim9413 11 місяців тому

      Yes, it's a says catalizer or something to that effect on the left side cover over the converter. The bikes have two 33mm carbs which of course is 66mm total for this 650. One carb for each intake valve. Also dual exhaust headers for the two exhaust valves. The four valve head with the 66mm total intake area is impressive except the air box, jetting and exhaust really choke it off. Air box mod, jetting changes and free flowing exhaust make a night a day difference in the performance. I have ridden them both ways. Stock and modified. It's well worth the effort to open them up to free breathing. These singles can be tuned to really rip. The carbs when I got it were flooding the cat. The floats were set wrong. Quick way to ruin a catalizer.
