Alongside more traditional art, I create illustrations for tshirts, greeting cards, etc. Shown here is a t-shirt design for a fun current trend called "whimsigoth." I chose a vivid pink and a softer cream shade for how they stand out against the black background. For vector artwork I prefer to start out right in Illustrator so I can keep the lines crisp. The five color set is $20 usd on Amazon which is $4 usd per tube, but the six color set is $40! I don’t do florals but I actually think it’s a nice starter set and not bad for guys that don’t do florals (I’m more into illustration and comics). I would love it with a mars black (aka oxide or lunar black).

    • @crysodenkirkart
      @crysodenkirkart 21 день тому

      Yeah, I was kind of surprised how versatile it was as a set. I've used it for a couple other things since this one that weren't florals and I really like the vibrance of the color. For a watercolor, the black's pretty dark, too. You could easily make this a mars with a tiny bit of the red added to it. I think it would take that mixing well.

    Thanks for the video! I like the way you explain your process and the history as relevant to the artform. It's fascinating and informative! With art nouveau being associated more with feminine figures, I am struggling with templates for sketching male/masculine figures using art nouveau style. For me, I associate the 'curvilinear' male body with the curvilinear art nouveau style. Do you have any advice beyond these 15 principles?

    • @crysodenkirkart
      @crysodenkirkart 26 днів тому

      I think you could still use the basic principle of how the lines flow to create the poses for a more masculine figure. Society at large has a tendency to draw them in a more power stance boxy hard-lined way, but if you use a french curve to draw your basic stance (meaning, the curve of the spine, the center line from top of head to the toes, the angles that arms and legs rest in), you'll go a long way to incorporating them into the flow of the rest of the document. Some of the Sandra Bernhardt posters by Mucha might be a good study here too (I know, I said "more than Mucha" but he's got some really good examples for this and it's different from the floating ladies in white dresses trope). In some of them she's standing tall in what you might consider a power pose, not curvy at all, and in those, there are a lot of strong verticals. The clothing and figure don't contain perfectly straight lines, they're still a bit organic, but very strongly vertical. I'm thinking specifically of the Medee poster, where the bulk of the image is vertical, and then it's rounded off at the top and with an organic mess at the ground. It relies more on boundary breaking than an overall curvy flow, reserving the curves for the bits that are transgressed. Though the subject is a woman, I think that's a very masculine piece.

      @@crysodenkirkart I’m a bit of a butterfly, I’m afraid. Abstract in both watercolour and acrylics, pencil portraits, oil and pastel occasionally, charcoal, line and wash… I could go on. My favourite periods are Impressionism, post Impressionism and Pre-Raphaelites. Artists I specifically love are John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Georges Seurat, Charles Rennie Mackintosh of course, and Brian Rutenberg. Told you in was a butterfly!

    Not sure where you’re getting “chalkiness” from. There’s no chalk or filler added to the paints. It is pigment and the binder which is water soluble resin rather than gum Arabic which is a tree sap resin. Gouache also has no chalk in it.

    • @crysodenkirkart
      @crysodenkirkart 3 місяці тому

      When it was dry on the page, the paint had a chalky texture, which surprised me because the other gansai I've used (even other Kuretake ones) didn't. That doesn't mean it literally had chalk in it. It was very powdery.

    What a wild ride to get this journal; so much usps drama, ugh! But it does look very nice and I’m floored that the Memories page (which looks SO cool) didn’t bleed or warp the paper! Kind of impressive. But I agree, I don’t like that you can’t really put your logo on the back of a product and that RB then puts a sticker of another artist’s name in the package. That really stinks. I’ve been using the Printful for years and they don’t do that and do allow you to do a little logo stuff at least with shipping. So far they’ve been great for me!

    • @crysodenkirkart

      I will have to give the Printful ones a try as well. Maybe once I get deeper into it I'll do a comparison video of all the different print on demand journals to see which one holds up best as an art journal.

    There is a true cobalt light violet and a cobalt light violet tine in the range. Not sure about cadmium, haven't checked. Just got a 72 box (an incredible end of year deal) & did not find them as liquidy (one A4 painting). Could have something to do with room temperature besides body temperature if they are softened to the core. Some pigments are truly amazing & I am gonna be pretty thoughtful about mixing them so they keep their wonderful hues.

  • @murph8411
    @murph8411 8 місяців тому

    Given how shiny or glossy the pans look I’d think there must be a considerable amount of gum/resin/glue in these and therefore probably more than usual glycerine to stop the paint cracking. The lack of information on the pigments used as well as the binder is troubling since they may change pigments without buyers knowing so even if you weed out the fairly sizeable number of non light fast paints when it comes time to replace paint the lightfast rating may have changed. Oh and watercolours advertised as using honey are using it as a replacement for glycerine (or in a mixture with less glycerine) so it’s a plasticiser, humectant. Both glycerine and honey are hygroscopic but don’t act as very good binders/glues. They won’t hold your pigment to the paper very well at all. I have read the kuretake use some synthetic resin as a binder but most watercolours use gum Arabic. Maybe kuretake use something like aquazol.

    • @crysodenkirkart
      @crysodenkirkart Рік тому

      Bee Paper's Mixed Media paper. It's got less texture than a lot of watercolor papers, which is good for using with the ink drawing, but enough texture and weight for the watercolor to act the way you're expecting it to. The one I'm using is 80lb; I received it ages ago and don't see it for sale directly anywhere now. The link in the description goes to the same paper but in 93lb., which is close enough that it should be practically identical in handling. Thanks for the question!

      The great thing about art is that you can start whenever and wherever you are! And the best way to do that is to jump in the middle and do whatever you find engaging. It's skill based, so it _will_ take practice to get to the point where you're happy with your own drawings or paintings, but the best way to gain a skill is by doing. I would encourage you to give it a try if it's something you're interested in.
