Hey, maybe you could clear this up for me... isn't a Cmaj6 the same thing as an Amin7, with C in the bass? Why do we need both categories? Especially when we use inversions of both. It just makes for more names for the same thing. This is the convention, though. I guess you think about them differently in terms of function, but I've never seen anyone talk about them being identical.
Hey, yeah they are identical in terms of the notes, but they can sound completely different depending on the bass note- so you’re right, the function is super important! That’s why we call is Am7 vs CMaj6. Really does matter and changes the sound. -NK
2/4 is the dominant marching band tempo. RUBBISH!! I was in a military band for 20 years. Music was 4/4, 6/8 and a few, really only a few 2/4 pieces. Boom chick chick to you 🫡
You don’t have to insult
Don’t have to insult, disagree politely please
Noah and team, please dissect Joey Calderazzo’s harmonic language. Less famous is this amazing pianist that I found on the Youtune, David Kikoski. Pretty please?
Hey Brian, love this idea. Will keep it in mind for future videos!
It's a good technique, and your commentary on your choices is good. However, I wouldn't consider it counterpoint if any voices are in "lockstep" with each other. To me, counterpoint is defined by independence bewteen voices. Being in lockstep opposes that. Not that it's bad, but it's more like counterpoint inspired than counterpoint. I can accpet some breaking of rules, like the direct 5ths here for a modern style though, (leaving or approaching a 5th from similar mothion).
Heard! Yes we originally talked about this in the context of a greater counterpoint discussion- so the discussion included opposing lines that compliment each other as well, so good call and thanks for the comment!
I learn the alt scale in the 70’s as the diminished whole time scale. First half is half whole and 2nd half it whole tone. So that’s how I think
I think you mean the Diminished whole *tone scale
What does click the link means Noah??
Hi Bruce, there are links in the description of the video
I gotta say I've been mainly into death metal my whole life, but the past year or two I've gotten into jazz way more and learning piano and drums. It's unbelievable how many amazing smaller jazz channels exist teaching fountains of knowledge for free. Great video!
Wow thank you so much! Interesting how we come to different areas of music at different times. I actually started as a punk rock drummer before falling in love with jazz piano in college.
Thanks Antonio, much appreciated. Glad you found us!
Get em Matt!!!!
Thank you!
Hello man..I'm from Brazil. It would be Better if we could see your hands on The keyboard, then we would understand better. I'm an intermediate level, sorry.
Thanks for the feedback! We will have hands on the keyboard a lot of the time, just got a lot to squeeze in with the transcription!
What is model interchange amd how to play it can you exaplain clearly in a longer video? Plz
Thanks for your question! We will actually be releasing a new video on this soon.
So what it's your birthday
LOL, exactly! Time to write some new lyrics 😂
that's a supercool way to crate interesting lines with voicings. I'm definitely practicing this technique. thanks a lot!
Thanks for the analysis. May I ask what tool you're using that's displaying chord spellings in real time, next to the grand staff?
Cool video. What tune is this?
It’s from It Could Happen to You, great tune / recording
Really well explained
Thank you for watching!
great analysis!
Appreciate you checking it out!
Nice idea to practice. Thanks
Thanks for checking it out!
A favourite of Claude Debussy.
Indeed!
Thank you for showing how to simplify this. I can´t tell you how much I appreciate it.
Amazing. Why did I not figure this out on my own? lol
Hahah always easier in hindsight
Wellcome with your new channel
Thank you!
Excellent posts as ever complementing the excellent more substantive course materials I've bought and greatly helped the journey 🙌
Thanks so glad you're finding it all helpful!
Thanks for EVERYTHING you share Noah. Greetings from Argentina.
Greetings, it's a pleasure, thanks for your comment!
First here…😃
Thanks for being the first!
When I was in college I flirted with the idea of minoring in Philosophy. With hubris, I signed up for a graduate-level course and could barely keep up. I like to think that I'm intelligent, but that course kicked my ass and I was lucky to get a "C". I have the same vibe following your lessons and more recently, your live Sunday sessions. I'm an intermediate level player. I don't want you to change your curriculum or your delivery on my account. But if there is a way you can help bridge the gap for us non-experts to help us level up, that would (sipping from mug pause) be great. Thanks, Matt. I'm loving these extra lessons!
Noah here, we will definitely keep it in mind! Appreciate you taking the time to leave a kind and thoughtful comment about it.
Great work! This is a hugely effective exercise. Take a couple of rhythms from existing solos, and then create a new solo or etude based on those same rhythms but with entirely new notes. A drummer once told me in regards to comping that rhythm is the key to unlocking everything. This is why you can hear Keith Jarrett play the most simple line that looks boring on paper, but sounds like pure brilliance.
Agreed- when it comes to comping, rhythm is key. You could almost play random notes in the chords and if the rhythms are compelling and engaging, they can still contribute a lot to the music. Great point, Brendan!
Thank you so much for connecting with us here. And yes, rhythm is so key!
