@@nidavellnirnalbindinguk You can try to make a Mammen stitch version of the Coptic sock which the pattern is similar to the original one,but instead it’s makes your feet more warmer during the winter months.

Glad you enjoyed the lecture. 😊🙏💜 Regarding your question, Nalbinding historically has never been used to make larger items of clothing in the past, as you had the ability to weave large swathes of fabric on a loom for that purpose. So it was more time and cost effective to utilise that woven fabric for full garments. Making nalbound sweaters has however, in the last 30years become a bit of a nuanced thing, where some fiber artist have utilised modern knitting patterns to create them. Its a great modern craft project if you have the skill and patience. However, sadly, no historical or archaeological evidence that this was done in past.

There are some amazing full body suits made in Nålbinding from Africa. One of them is (well, was last May at least) in permanent exhibition in National Museum of Danmark, in Copenhagen. It is from mid 19th century Congo, the Pende people.

You're very welcome, glad you found it informative 😀 I think one of the biggest sticking points in learning Nalbinding that I've observed with my students, is that sometimes folks over think the stitch formation or are unsure where to go with the needle. That's where simple looping, as a Nalbinding form is a great help, because it teaches you the basic techniques and structure that can then be applied to other more complex stitches. So practice and patience pays off for sure!

It's Oslo stitch :)

The Hansen Notation is `U/OU B1 F1`. I suggest looking at the 13 year old video on how to do the stitch from that one Finnish Lady, then putter around on how to make gloves and socks. Per `U/OU`, that's what it looks like when you do the stitch. It's a single step stitch, so there are no thumb straps to distract from the action. Per `B1 F1`, you connect to the pillars or X's formed in the last row. I'm not that experienced in the craft, but the starting two rows from the hem cockle hard and are the least consistent in terms of tension/size. From the looks of this, this is slightly different to the Dutch Stitch, ~`U/OU B1`. What I'm missing is how to split the toes. I suppose you simply run a few stitches off to make the shoulder from the round start? And run a few stitches across to make an early loop if doing a row start, starting from the hem. I don't want to think about the big toe.

Hi Max, Yes, You can, although Oslo Stitch is a very thick stitch to use. So you have to learn how to manipulate the stitches to shape your hat or keep the stitches more open. But yes, you can certainly nalbind a hat in Oslo Stitch, I've nalbound several. :-)

Of course you most certainly can use "regular yarn". However, most modern "wool" is actually made from acrylic. So you can certainly nalbind in acrylic, but its not necessarily helpful to learn as a beginner, a historical craft with modern fibres. I would recommend learning the craft from the historical foundation using wool, so you can see and understand how the stitches form, how the textile builds and how you can shape your items. Theres a reason why this craft developed using natural fibres. Nalbinding in acrylic or even plant fibres, requires a series of adaptions. That you only learn, when your nalbinding from a strong craft foundation and skill. Thats why wool is recommend for beginners. Once you feel confident in your nalbinding skill, then of course, you can explore your own craft. 😊

Hi Tamara, not at present, as far as I'm aware. The preservation of textiles requires specific soil conditions to enable them to survive. So I'm not aware of any Scandinavian examples in North America sadly. Sadly DNA can't be used with any effect on ancient textiles. Using a scanning electron microscope, however can help us look deep inside the makeup of the fabric, so we can tell if its made from plant or animal fibre. Sometimes we can even see the weave or technique used in its creation. So there are definitely other methods we can use when available. Thanks for the question. 😊👍
