Would you buy a house on an Auction? let us know!
Did you ask for the keys?
We did 🤣
This story about the solicitor claiming that someone else bid 1k more by email, sounds a lot like the solicitor was trying to pocket herself some money.
Initially we thought the same thing but talking with other folks that had big in e-leiloes apparently this can happen if the auction is tagged as private negotiation.
If this was a bank foreclosure maybe the previous owners let themselves in to take things?
It wasn’t a foreclosure, what happen here was one of the heirs contracted debt with the Portuguese IRS and the house had to be sold to pay up the heirs debt.
I had no idea that there were property auctions in Portugal. We bought a home in northern Algarve near the Alentejo to be fixed up and it's been years. It's hard to find someone in construction reliable that just doesn't rob us since we are out of the country most of the year. If you can recommend someone reliable and affordable in construction please do.
Right now the majority of auctions are thru e-leilões. Doing constructions while being abroad is a really challenge. When in Portugal i would search for a builder with good reputation in your area. One way to avoid being ripped off would be to buy all the materials and pay for labour only. You would have more control over the budget. Other option is to contract an architect to follow up on the build while you are out. Having that person the responsibility that things are done according to you specifications and budget.
As my mother would say "voces metenhse em cada uma"...but cant wait to see where this goes.
🤣🤣🤣 you are right!
Look forward to following this!
Thank you! We got more surprises coming 🤣🤣🤣 This house has given us some scares and curious surprises ;)
Thank you for posting this video. I have been following you for some time now and you're so genuine and loving.
Thank you for the lovely comment! It made my day!
I heard "Multicare insurance" doesn't cover dermatologist and psychiatrist. Is it true?
Multicare has different plans, ours (multicare 2) does cover those specializations. We already had a dermatologist appointment that was covered.
Yes plz info about the aluminium underlay.
I'm laying cork tiles in my kitchen..will look for some resin to put on top. Tx for your nice mini vid =)
Sure :) we bought this www.spacereflex.com/en/produto/thermal-insulation/pro-db-thermal-roofs/ it seems they know have an upgrade with is thermal and acoustic version of it. What is the resin you will put on top?
@MeetCarolas not sure...there was a comment which said it was a good idea. I might ceramic tile under cupboards as this is such valuable cool storage space.
Lovely video. I’ve been planning Portugal for 2 years now. Was close last year. Alentejo is very interesting and I would consider but my wife loves the beach so maybe closer to Sines / Porto Covo. Out of interest if you’re checking all comments. How did you find learning Portuguese? Clearly to read books you are very good. I’m learning using apps and slowly slowly getting there. But a long journey.
Thank you! Sines is a lovely area as well. In our case we grew up in Portugal, we did our education in Portuguese.
Despite living in Lisbon I also own a house in Montargil (10 minutes from Ponte de Sor) and I can confirm the video is 100% accurate. It is also my safe place.
Thank you for the feeedback David! We love Montargil specially for sailing/kayaking in the barragem ;)
You can tell how early someone in on their piano journey by the pinky. I find it so warming! Keep at it, it is super rewarding!!!

We are in Ponte de Sor, district of Portalegre
@MeetCarolas Thanks!
um abraço de almeirim! 🤠😎
Obrigada!
My wife and I are leaning towards Leiria, but it looks absolutely beautiful there in Alentejo! Thanks for sharing!
Leiria is also lovely!
Leiria is nice. Its much bigger. Check out the town between Leiria and Coimbra called Pombal. Its a very good well located town. We spent a year in a village just minutes from pombal.
@@Nanavarasa Also lovely locations!

Fell in love with the Alentejo many, many years ago but haven't been since then. It's so worth a visit! Wonder what town you live in... Regards from Zutphen!
Alentejo has so much to offer :) we are in Ponte de Sor
Also... lovely music!

I laid a cork floor in my bathroom back in 2000 which I stained and varnished. It was only in 2022 that I sanded off the varnish, which was showing signs of wear. I re-stained & re-varnished the floor and it looked as good as new. Cork is environmentally friendly, highly water resistant, anti bacterial, lightweight, very slow to burn, as well as being an acoustic, thermal, and impact insulator. I now have a new home and when refurbishment starts ........ all of my floors will be cork. FYI #1 cork is used as a thermal insulator in the nose cones of space rockets for all of the reasons I noted above. FYI #2 not only is cork used internally, & externally, as house insulation but an actual house has also been built of cork. It is in Windsor, Berkshire, UK. It is also used to many toys, furniture, sports gear, in the construction of shoes ...... and has even been turned into fabric to make clothes. I think it is amazing stuff. ua-cam.com/video/GKKxNJzymH0/v-deo.html
@bugsymillar8402 Thank you for your insights! Can you tell me what product you use staining and varnishing? we might need to do that to keep it lasting a long time ;)
@MeetCarolas Hi. I am in the UK so used a Colron wood dye. Some other brands here in the UK are Ronseal, and Liberon, but there are many more. As cork is the bark from the cork tree (i.e. it's wood) and product - adhesive, paint, dye/stain, varnish etc, can be used. Once I had finished staining the floor I then used 3 or 4 coating of a normal floor varnish. Just some brands here in the UK are Ronseal, Rustins, Fortress, but again, there are many more. I would suggest that if you want to dye the floor it would be helpful to get a sample of the cork and try out your chosen colour. When I applied mine the colour was lighter that I wanted so I did several coats of the dye and then, once dry, I did several coats of the (water based) floor varnish.
@bugsymillar8402 Thank you for the insights! Much appreciated! will look in to those brands to give a layer of protection
Thanks for the informative video. Blaming the cork floor for not holding up to 7 times kitchen flooding is a bit silly. Any organic floor would have issues with that.
My bad if it came across that I blame it on the floor. That was not my intention, we love the floor just had bad luck with our kitchen water issue.
@MeetCarolas Sorry about the bad luck. Hope the floor continues serving. Have a good year.
Thank you! Happy new year!
Big Cork shill!
I was just looking at cork flooring, and it sounds like it's best for the living room and bedrooms. Tile or linoleum for bathroom and kitchen. Could you replace the affected pieces of cork flooring in your kitchen without doing the whole kitchen?
We love the cork floor! even in our kitchen, we had the bad luck of several big leaks in our kitchen.. specially under the floor which accelerated the damage. There is folks that have cork in the kitchen with zero problems at all. Right now we aren't sure we can savage it yet. When we remove the affected pieces starting with the ones under the kitchen cabinets we will be able to assess if we can replace those with out redoing all floor. The main issue for us is the fact that we installed it continuously thru the kitchen, under the cabinets all the way to the open living room. Looking back at it wasn't the best approach but we learn from it ;)
A considerable number of houses in Australia have cork flooring. And it is extremely resistant to water damage. The reason for the resistance to water is a thick clear resin that is poured on top of the cork flooring when it is installed. The dried resin forms a thick waterproof barier on top of the cork flooring wich makes the floor waterproof also. Did you pour resin on top of your floor in the kitchen?
We were not aware of this resin treatment you could do. Thank you for sharing will keep it in mind for the next installation of these floor

hey hey, really curious what you will swap for
We love the brand Wicanders floor, probably will go toward an OAK floor type. We've used Wicanders in the past and after many years the floor still looks amazing! Amazing Video , many thx for the valuable info I am about to do this move for next school year and very confused Can i ask which city you guys living in?? I was planning for Lisbon but might be if going little farther would be better Another question if you applied so they will give you a place anyway or their is a possibility of not having a place I have 11, 13 , 16 next year Many thanks once again
Thank you for the feedback :) we are glad this video was helpful. We are in the municipality of Portalegre. We are planning to do a video about a "week" in our lives here ;) to share more about the benefits we've found of living in a small city. Normally if you apply to public school which will open somewhere around April/May time frame you select the schools you like. They will try to match you against your first option if not possible will look in to the other ones. If you are coming to Portugal, you can visit some of the school agrupamentos, talk with the principal and see what would be a good match for your kids. If they don't speak Portuguese it might be a challenge specially for the older one, since he is entering Ensino Secundario and those grades will be used toward a future colleague application.
@MeetCarolasmany thanks for the kind advise I will follow your guide though And waiting for the video as you mentioned!! Many thanks once again And please keep up the outstanding work Ana amazing channel with a valuable content!!😊

Hello there, thank you for the great video. Can you share which municipality you are having your family at? I ask because I know they change a lot from place to place. Also want to share that I went to private school for many years in Portugal and I also suffered bullying there from students and teachers - I believe each school and each kid need to be taken in consideration in their individuality and we need to be open and aware for them to share verbal and non verbal cues. We learn and keep going and getting better
Thank you for the feedback! I'm sorry to hear about your experience in Private Schools, is a pity people treat each other this way :( We are in the municipality of Portalegre.
Thanks! Looking into floors that absorb sound, hold up against kids, feel good barefoot, and are easy to clean.
Happy to help! we love our cork floors! now in Winter is lovely the comfort

A esperança é a última a morrer ;)

I really enjoyed your video on cork flooring! It's great to hear about your experience after three years. I completely agree with you about the comfort-walking on cork is like a dream, especially during the colder months. I installed cork floors in my living room and found them really warm and cozy. However, I also faced similar flooding issues in my kitchen, which was frustrating. We had a leak under the sink that caused damage despite using mats and sealing properly. I noticed some dark spots too, so I can relate to what you described. For anyone considering cork, I recommend keeping a close eye on moisture-prone areas. After a year, I ended up replacing a section in the kitchen with vinyl planks that are more waterproof, and it has held up much better. Thanks for sharing your insights! It’s always helpful to hear real stories from fellow homeowners. Looking forward to more updates on your renovations!
@pepdealc192268 Thank you for your lovely comment! your feedback is key for us to know if this type of content resonates ;) glad it does and its helpful!
@@Troy_Kelly thank you. Yup washing up area gets wet. Your idea is great.
Great summary and break out of how you came to the conclusion why public worked for you. I love how you isolated why the public system works so well in your community. The fact that it’s not a large city means the community is more in line (in my opinion since I come from a smaller town and saw this too). Excellent video that details the input into your decision making. Your research before moving there really paid off! Thanks for sharing! Our kids are in an International school in a large city in the US and we are also concerned about the shock she will have going to public. I was in 3rd grade when I went to public and it was tough and my learning regressed. Looking back, those “traumas” helped me in a lot of ways that I won’t detail here. I went to about 6 different public elementary schools and my family was not in the military :-)
Thank you for sharing your experience Alexis ❤️❤️❤️
Love hearing details of the materials you are using in your renovations. Please keep sharing. Muito obrigada 🙏🏽😊
Thank you Luise :) If all goes well we might be sharing soon an exciting renovation project ;)
Well, we have two daughters who, during our first two years in Porto went to 3 different public schools (first and second cycle). The first shock for us was not the bullying itself, which was actually quite horrific (especially for us coming from Canada) and happened everywhere, but especially the fact that it seemed to be accepted as a matter of fact, as something that doesn't really need to be taken seriously and addressed seriously. It happened in all three schools in various forms from physical or verbal abuse and violence to ignoring and isolating or mocking and name-calling one just because he/she is foreign and/or different. Secondly, we were intrigued by the fact that our daughters seemed to almost never have homework, or had a lot less than we expected based on the amount of information in their manuals. Also, the feedback we got from our daughters made us have more and more doubts. For example our younger daughter told us that her teacher was repeatedly either going through all the questions in the test and answering them on the blackboard the day before the test. Or simply was giving the right answer to questions during the test itself to students who were struggling. Our other daughter told us that some teachers (TIC comes to mind) was just telling students to draw or read something during the class while he was sitting and scrolling on his mobile phone for the full duration of the class. Significant chunks of some manuals were left uncovered until the end of the year (not all disciplines, but some). Thirdly, in terms of extracurriculars, the offer was OK in the second cycle school, but very poor in the first cycle. And finally, we got sick and tired of school-days missed by our daughters because of various strikes by one or another of the various unions of school workers. So we decided in the end to go private, and chose one of the private Portuguese schools in Porto that ranks highest in the national ranking, and now, after over one year of private education we can say that there is no way we'd ever go back to public. Absolutely everything is better, from education (our daughters have very little free time during the trimester, even on weekends, because they have a ton of tests they have to prepare for, but that's good for them, because we believe education starts in school but continues at home), extracurriculars (a lot more variety), lack of strikes, and finally zero tolerance to bullying. Moreover, phones, tablets or laptops are completely forbidden during the classes and frowned upon during recess. So that's that. We recognize that others may have different experiences from ours, but this was our experience with public schools in Portugal.
@cristiantoma4590 Thank you for sharing your experience and perspective. I'm sorry to hear that you had such an horrendous experience in the public system and we are happy to hear that your daughters are going well in the private school ❤️
@@MeetCarolas Thank you. Yeah, it was so bad that they actually had nightmares during the summer vacation about going back to the same school. It took a couple of months for the nightmares to subside once they got into the private school. They couldn't be happier now, despite the huge workload they now have. To this day I blame myself for not realizing how bad the situation was and not doing anything about it. But, as they say, all's well that ends well. Thanks again.
@cristiantoma4590 As Parents, We don't get it right many times but we try our very best with the info we have at hand. We shouldn't blame ourselves when we don't get it right the first time ❤️ its hard but we also need to be gentle with ourselves.
Wow You scared me 🥹 i have 3 kids moving next school year
Had a cork floor installed in my kitchen in my old house. 6 years, no issues. It was perfect. Installed white cork in my living room in my current house. Sem problemas, would do it again and again. Cumprimentos.

The responsibility of adding the contract to finanças belongs to the landlord. He is the one that needs to add it in the finanças AT website

Thank you for the video. We are moving to Mafra from North America, and your videos really help.
Thank you for your lovely comment! We are glad to help :)
Not to mention how Salazar kept the country isolated for 40+ years. And the only income was from remittances. That is why you see many abandoned rural properties.
That is a great call out! thank you
