Rita Williams-Garcia on Storytelling, Black Panthers, and Writing History
Rita Williams-Garcia, born April 13, 1957, is an award-winning author celebrated for her novels for children and young adults. With a career spanning decades, Rita is best known for her ability to weave vivid stories that shine a light on African American history and experiences, particularly through the lens of young protagonists. Her critically acclaimed book One Crazy Summer (2010) earned the Newbery Honor, Coretta Scott King Award, and Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. Inspired by her own childhood memories and extensive research, the book explores the role of children in the Black Panther Movement during the late 1960s.
Rita's storytelling often draws on her personal experiences, imagination, and admiration for historical figures. She was deeply inspired by the powerful women of the Black Panther Movement, such as Angela Davis and Kathleen Cleaver, and sought to highlight the often-overlooked contributions of children in pivotal historical moments. The sequels to One Crazy Summer, including P.S. Be Eleven (2013) and Gone Crazy in Alabama (2015), continued to receive accolades, with both winning the Coretta Scott King Award.
A National Book Award finalist for Jumped (2010) and Clayton Byrd Goes Underground (2017), Rita's works often mix fiction with real-life historical events, creating compelling narratives for young readers. Her characters, like Delphine in One Crazy Summer, are inspired by people she has known, including her sister and mother, making them relatable and authentic.
Beyond writing, Rita enjoys hobbies like knitting, dancing, and boxing. Her favorite foods range from fried catfish to black beans and melted cheese, reflecting her down-to-earth personality. A former dancer and avid reader, she encourages aspiring writers to write daily, explore new experiences, and read widely to hone their craft.
Despite her fear of flying, Rita's influence has reached readers across the globe. Through her books, she continues to inspire young minds, champion diverse voices, and bring history to life in unforgettable ways.

Bone's such an amazing series, but I can see how certain things could be problematic. As a whole, though, I don't see an issue with it, but (and someone who hates censorship) there are certainly other books that are worthy of being banned from schools.

this is awesome. this book stuck with me so hard when i was like 13 or so. keep it up with finding interesting people to interview and see if you can get a bit more loose with your responses! i never thought i would see mt anderson though, and i’m pretty sure he looks just like i thought he would. super cool to see it! year after year i have thought back to that book and year after year it has become closer to the truth.

I love Bone, but I think the mains reasons for banning it have to do with the depictions of violence and death which I wouldn’t want kids reading in elementary school.

It really doesn't have anything too graphic in it though, the violence is consistently shown as a bad thing and deaths are handled in a mature way

lol, flashback to when Briar “hooded one” cleaves a man in two with a scythe. They really shouldn’t be available to elementary students in a school library. However it’s one of my favorite stories and series, and I would hate it if it’s removed from middle schools and high schools.

I can’t go to a book store or a digital book storefront without seeing a slew of novels whose only identity is that it’s about a given foreign culture (foreign to the US). There is no censorship. These stories are being actively pushed at all costs, which is fine as long as they are good novels (most are). But pretending these books are getting “censored” is hilariously out of touch

Esperanza Rising is such a beautiful story. I remember reading it in school (I'm out of college now). I read it because it was on the list of Bluebonnet Award nominees, and there was a reading challenge issued by the school to read a certain number. I wish it were hard to imagine the kinds of people who want it banned, as hard as it was to imagine the true injustices of the world that book introduced me to when I was a child, in a positive, uplifting, hopeful way. Please keep working to keep your story in the hands of readers. ❤

Advocacy is one thing but bullying is another. Such activists have become bullies and they are too woke in their narrative to realize the level of their tyranny of the minority and censorship. Where else except at Harvard someone exposed for serial cheating can still collect her $900,000 salary and no one can question such hypocrisy less one is stigmatized as a racist. One cannot be both an activist and an academic. An activist has strongly held beliefs that they attempt to persuade others of, whereas an academic needs to dispassionately view all sides in order to pursue truth. If one of your lecturers admits to being an activist you would do well to immediately look for a different university and demand your money back. Good luck, sadly much of academia is a joke right now, perhaps save your money.

Even professors themselves [at least the good ones] say they are not going to share their opinions, as should be.
