From Grass to Gas: The Napier Grass Bio-Pellet Revolution-Dr P.C. Patel
India burns 670 million tons of coal annually for power generation. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Government of India mandates a 5% blend of biomass pellets from agro-residues in coal plants with bowl mills, benefiting its 1.5 billion population by improving air quality.
The cultivation of Napier grass for compressed biogas is not only an environmentally sustainable solution but also an economically viable one. Its ability to sequester carbon, improve soil health, and provide renewable energy makes it a valuable asset in the fight against climate change. At the same time, its high yield, role in job creation, and contribution to rural development present significant economic opportunities for farmers and communities.
The Napier Grass Bio Pellet has higher Gross calorific value (4245 Kcal/Kg) as compared to Rice straw, Wheat straw, Cotton stalk, Corn stalk, Peanut shell and , Rape straw (ranged from 3200 to 3800 Kcal/Kg).
Moreover, Super Hybrid Napier Grass has higher green forage production (150-200 tons/acre/year) in 5-6 cuttings).
Government support in Biopellet production in India
The “Biomass Programme” by the “Ministry of New and Renewable Energy” in India aims to support the establishment of “Biomass Briquette/Pellet manufacturing plants” and promote “Biomass (non-bagasse) based cogeneration projects” in industries across the country.
1. Financial Assistance:
- Briquette/Pellet Manufacturing Plants: Up to Rs.9 lakh per metric ton/hour (MTPH) manufacturing capacity (maximum Rs. 45 lakhs per plant).
- Biomass (Non-bagasse) Cogeneration Projects: Up to Rs. 40 lakhs per megawatt (MW) installed capacity (maximum Rs.5 crores per project).
2. Eligibility:
- Self-funded projects are also eligible for financial assistance.
- Projects with new equipment/machinery qualify for assistance.
3. Application Process:
- Proposals for Central Financial Assistance (CFA) are accepted through the “BioURJA Portal” before commissioning.
- Commissioning timeframes: 12 months for Briquette/Pellet plants and 24 months for Biomass cogeneration plants from the "In-Principle" approval date.

Napier grass pelleting plant technical process
Drying: Wet elephant grass, even after crushing process, can’t be sent into biomass briquette machine since it should be dried through the dryer to meet moisture requirements for briquetting. If the elephant grass is dry and the moisture content reach the standard, this process can be ignored. The Napier grass can be dry in the sun, in order to save energy cost for drying.
Crushing: Because Napier grass is relatively long and can’t be directly processed into briquettes, it needs to be crushed into small pieces for further processing. And, this process also can help to protect biomass briquetting press machine. Then Napier grass passes through high effective hammer mill and rotary drying system.
Pelleting: After the above process Napier grass is fed into pelleting machine which is specially designed (customized) to ensure this kind of light material can be fed into the pellet machine easily for required sizes and shapes.

      In India such technolgy adopted by the first Chem Process Systems, Dhrangadhra, Gujarat. The advanced technolgy are availble in the world but who will adopt. I have observed that when India adopt advanced technolgy then they are not maintaing for a longer period.       The average production of Super Napier is 350 to 500 tons per hectare and it is viable for Bio-CNG production. 200 acres land requested for 5/6 tons BIO-CNG daily production. We have to add daily 100 tons chopped green forage in a digestor.

      It is not possible to produce huge production of napier per acre. It is a highly exhaustive crops and in a year we harvested 6 to 7 crops so obviously more uptake of nutrients. If we increases more carbon in soil then forage production will be increasing but it is not vaible. We have to look cost benefit ratio also.

    doubt.. if we have 150 tons of green napier. grass we cant have 150 ton of pellets because grass is wet we need to dry it to approx 10% moisture so 60% WEIGHT WILL BE REDUCED, so we cant have more than 50-70 Tons of pellet

      Actually in India not a sigle plant of biopellet from Napier grass, but that machine can be sued with some modification so contact to manufacturer for details. In Rajkot, machine is availble.
