Suzuki 1100G Clutch Slave Fix
The clutch became hard to pull in, but eased with a warm engine. So I was suspecting the slave cylinder (on the engine).
I made some errors in the process, which I corrected in post edit, so the video may be a bit off.
But it is nice and smooth now.

Falcon 9 Launch short - 6/18/2024 - Mesa AZ

I didn't think we would get a good view of this launch from Vandenburg CA, as it was a long way past sunset in Mesa, Arizona. I was wrong... should have gone to a park. The 2nd stage did vanish into the dark when the earths shadow covered it. There is about a 1 hour window from sunset when they can be seen
FZ 09 Throttle smoothing

The throttle on the FZ-09 was always abrupt when coming off idle. I have seen a couple of video's on how to fix it and AT LAST, I finally got around to doing it. It requires going into DIAG mode and retarding the position of the TPS (Throttle position sensor) which seems to work a treat. It takes the edge off of that sudden power input off idle, but doesn't does not loose any perceivable power ...

Horizontal Wheel Balancing on a Ball
Переглядів 80Місяць тому
This video shows the geometry behind how balancing an automotive wheel, on a ball, can be done. It explains why; A) The Center of Gravity (CG) of the wheel must be below the center point of the ball, for stability. B) The base the ball rests on has to be level, for accuracy. C) Wheels with large pilot diameters, can use Hub Centric Rings to reduce the pilot diameter to suit a single steel ball....

1100G Slide Guides - In Mikuni BST 36 Carbs - episode 9a

In this video, I'm trying to chose between keeping the throttle slide guides I already have - which are Teflon lined versions of the stock plastic guides. In the carbs, the throttle slide is pulled by engine vacuum against the slide guides and over time wear out. One of the problems with the guides wearing out is that the needle in the throttle slide, can get pulled hard against the needle jet ...

I'm trying a 6mm spacer under the spring to try and stop the flutter, but it still stalls out from an over rich condition. I was going to try to damp the motion with magnets & eddy currents. Did you ever solve this?

    • @richbinaz
      @richbinaz 4 дні тому

      Well, apparently it is meant to flutter. (Tech answer) Mikuni drilled a couple of big holes in the slide base allowing the vacuum above the diaphragm to build and drop quickly. Some people have done something like this on other carbs as a tuning mod, but Mikuni did it on this one as standard. The result is... The slide flutters like mad at any speed above idle. This causes the needle to rise and fall rapidly thru the needle jet and surprise surprise, wears out the needle jet. They may look round, but they are too big and drown the engine with fuel. There are no more original parts left to be had, so I installed a jet kit from Dynojet. This seemed to fix the over rich fueling issue, but then I discovered another issue with the choke valves not seating properly... Oh I never posted that discovery and fix. Now it's just too hot to go test it here in PHX. I did one run after the choke fix and it seems a bit better. There is some hope.

    Very cool setup! I thought about using wood for the duck bill mod as I've not yet tried my hand at welding, but didn't know how it would hold up - thus, leading to my purchase of the attachment I use. Looks like it'd do just fine based on your design here. Also, very interesting idea for the wheel balancer - I'll have to think on that more for my next tire change. I need to get a good laser level anyway for other projects. Anything to find an excuse to get another tool, hah!

    • @richbinaz
      @richbinaz 11 днів тому

      With the wooden arm + duckbill tool, there is a slight overturning moment (torque) when running the duckbill around the rim. Your setup with the "lucid autoworks" style design eliminates that moment, so stick with it. I was going for something cheap that anyone with basic woodworking tools could make. I already had the screws, glue and saws, so the only expense was the duckbill and a 2x4. The duckbill slides nicely around alloy rims without scratching too. The laser wheel balancer is my preferred method now, although I can break out a vertical balancer if the hub fits the wheel. You could use the "self levelling laser" on tires in addition to the bubble balancer. Just need a tripod to go with it. The laser is really good at throwing a level line. I think it was designed for people installing wallboard and the like. It beeps when it is outside it's level tolerance zone. I put links into the text under this video if you are interested

      @richbinaz 22 дні тому

      This is my preferred method for wheel balancing now. The 2 1/2 inch steel ball along with hub centric rings is able to cover most of the hub sizes. There are cases where the wheel spokes / hub pilot are closer to the center, they will likely be unstable. Then I would use a vertical method like this one ua-cam.com/video/du5cTMqpIhY/v-deo.html Since then, I've heard that trailer hubs don't have grease seals, so they should work with no mods. I have not tried to find one.

    I'm not sure if I am understanding you correctly, but this is what I understood and please tell me if I am wrong. To get the correct quantity of fluid inside, we need to do step 11 and 12. Once the D disappears, I shift to park, and wait until it it gives me a solid D. Once that happens, I quickly jump out of my vehicle, and unplug the drain, and let the excess fluid flow out, and once it's almost over, I screw the drain plug back, and whatever fluid is left inside is the correct amount? Let me know if that is correct. Also, I'm concerned that while I go under the vehicle to remove the drain plug, what if it starts flashing D? There won't be any way for me to know? Do I have to be quick to exit my vehicle and drain the excess oil?

    • @richbinaz
      @richbinaz 2 місяці тому

      Thank you for reading the steps - few do 😸 Almost there - here's a summary written slightly differently... You have the car level within 1 degree... pan back on... level straw in... drain plug in finger tight. You refill the trans with a little bit more FE oil than you measured coming out. (say ~5 qts) You start the car in maintenance mode (steps 11 & 12) The "D" should disappear when the oil is below temp (<35°C) NOW is the time to go under the car and remove the drain plug to drain out the excess. Leave it out while you get back to see the dashboard. As soon as the "D" appears, go back under and put the drain plug in. That accounts for any expansion of the oil while the transmission heats up. You now have the correct level and can torque up the drain bolt The D stays on for a 10°C span before it starts to flash (>45°C), so the 1 minute it takes to get back under the car, put the drain plug in and tighten it a little, will fall easily in that time span. This does work - you are almost there! Yes I had to think it thru several times before committing and doing it.

      5 gram, or 1/4 oz in my case, is more than good enough for the speeds I'm comfortable with. There is a tollway in Oklahoma with an 85mph speed limit and the tires are smooth as silk at that speed. I now just use the sticky weights too, so I can put them in the wheel CG plane. That avoids dynamic vibration issues.

    • @richbinaz
      @richbinaz 2 місяці тому

      Yes, great video! Got me inspired, thank you! There were a few problems I came across that I very slowly solved... 1. The ball and the resting surface have to be fairly hard - Now I have a steel ball and plate 2. The CG of the wheel/tire assy must be below the CG of the ball - For stability 3. The resting surface has to be level, to eliminate induced errors 4. For large wheel pilots, use hub centric ring(s) to reduce the pilot down to suit the ball size. The useless bubble balancer is now a paper weight in the shed. The largest tires I have done now were on a GM silverado truck. My sons father in law was complaining the wheel was bouncing up and down at 60mph - so I did a check balance when I took it off. It was way out. previously balanced by a large chain store over here (Discount tire) ua-cam.com/video/gGv5MUxbQ3c/v-deo.html I had trouble getting the new tire beads to seat, so I forgot to record the balance with new tires on. But the laser balancing worked great. No complaints at freeway/motorway speeds. Saw this later on, after finally getting the tires on. I thought there must be an easier and cheaper way ua-cam.com/video/cHuyseqOUHw/v-deo.html I have small inner tubes ready and waiting.

The air resistance is lower than the OEM filter - I blew thru them for this scientific comparison. I used 2 long bolts to hold the endplate in place. I am fairly sure after a couple of recent tests that the lower air flow resistance is not messing up the carbs. I'm now suspecting and over rich condition due to the slide flutter. I have tested them blowing into them (1-2psi max). No leaks. The slides are bouncing up and down quite freely, so the teflon guides are fine. Plus they have been in there since 2008 and I don't see why they would suddenly become a problem now. these engines are noisy and there's no much we can do about it. If you had it from day one (bike brand new) it can't be the rubber dampers... plus the worn rubbers noise appears "under load" meaning cruising around, off the throttle at about 3000 rpm when engine braking kicks in... you can feel a rough rumble and you can also feel the vibrations on the pegs in that same moment; it looks like in that rpm range there is the "push-pull" effect between engine braking/engine power. I made some comparisons and it gets worse if you have more chain slack and it gets better with a more tight chain. My clucth primary driven gear is a bit noisy but still working fine at 83.500km. I decided to change the whole clutch and keep the bike until it runs: I inspected the primary driven gear and - as expected - the dampers have 2-3mm of play under load; the basket fingers are fine (just discolored a bit), ad so is the pressing plate. Clutch boss isn't in a good shape, instead: the teeth of the friction plates dig grooves in its "rails", so - finally - I decided to change primary driven gear + clucth boss along with all the discs/springs, of course (springs were still within specs and the clutch was still working fine and the cable slack was quite small). My bike is a MT09 ABS MY2016, no popup clutch wheelies and I'm very smooth on the clucth lever when downshifting. Hope this will help someone

      Yes, good information. To get the bike down to a 400 lbs target weight, everything got thin. The engine cases and rotating masses are all minimalized. I'm amazed it runs so well. I had a clutch apart on an old Suzuki and it had the same grooves in the clutch basket. Which did not cause a problem before, but did afterwards as I think I shuffled the plates around a bit. So it was a bit grabby for the next 10K miles ua-cam.com/video/xdG5Oq8_VJQ/v-deo.html Be ready with the pause button.

    Dear RichB InAZ You've come to the conclusion that the ball balancing method doesn't work on your alloy wheel due to the center of gravity being too high. Trying to think of a low cost solution: What would happen if we let the wheel float on water in a big bucket, waiting for the water to calm completely, will the heaviest spot of the wheel sink a bit deeper than the rest of the wheel, making the light spot come up a bit? With a circular bubble level in the center of the wheel we could balance the floating wheel using weights. I'm not sure if the part of the wheel highest above the water level would be equal to the lightest spot. It could also be the case, that the part with the lowest densitiy floats highest. Maybe the rubber is a tiny bit wider/taller on one side, it would increase the volume and let it float higher there. Not sure if that part would also be the lightest an therefore give us a correct indication of where to put the weights. What do you think? It would be a very interesting video, comparing these results to your other balancing methods.

    • @richbinaz
      @richbinaz 4 місяці тому

      That is some very creative thinking there and it would almost work... Other than me not having a bucket of water big enough - could use an inflatable kiddie swimming pool. The issue I see is that the floating method is not relating back the wheels rotation axis. That is where the ball method comes in handy, the alignment is guaranteed. I did come up with some further refinements to get the alloy wheel to balance, using a smaller ball. ua-cam.com/video/JvN4i-qJqMs/v-deo.html I also figured out the base for the ball has to be level too. There are still some exceptions where this won't work, but the example I saw was quite rare. It was a very narrow wheel used on the front with drag racers dragracingwheels.com/hellcat-r-t-scat-charger-challenger-narrow/ Specifically dragracingwheels.com/forgestar-d5-gloss-black-wheel-w-machined-lip-18x5-37-5x115bc-f0918c071n37/ It may not work with Morris Minor wheels!! Then I was presented with a large truck tire that was giving an in-law some issues. For that I used a pair of hub centric rings with the smaller steel ball to ensure the CG's would be in the right place for balancing. A test balance quickly revealed the balance was way off. Unfortunately I was have such trouble getting the tire to seat I didn't video the balancing result... but it did work ua-cam.com/video/gGv5MUxbQ3c/v-deo.html

    • @Geiler_Daddy
      @Geiler_Daddy 4 місяці тому

      @@richbinaz You're right, i didn't consider the axis when placed in water. So I'm understanding correctly, the solution for an alloy wheel would be to use hub centric rings to allow use of a smaller ball? I've got a wheel that has the face of the rim (spokes) set backwards about one third into the rim, making the center of gravitiy probably be somewhere at the flange level (please excuse my english). No matter how small the ball, center of gravity would always be too high. Another possibility I think about is using an old wheel hub, narrowing the inner diameter of the wheel bearing in that hub down by using a sleeve with a thread in the middle. Place the sleeve permanently into the bearing inner diameter (maybe press in). Thread a bolt into the sleeve and attach a wire to the head of the bolt, all perfectly center. Hang it from the ceiling. The thread in the sleeve can be used to thread the bolt in and out, setting the height of the pivot point of the system to where it's most sensitive, but not too much to where it tips over. A narrow pipe could be attached exactly center on said sleeve, slightly bigger than the bolt, maybe leaving a 1/8 of an inch gap between pipe and wire, indicating a perfectly balanced level wheel when the air gap is evenly distributed between wire and pipe. I saw this method on a device used to balance small airplane wheels. I liked the water idea because it would remove the need of a level surface. This method would also remove that need, but it's not absolutely low tech or low cost like the ball method, which is what i like about it. Also it balances the hub along with it, which isn't helping. Thinking about it, a metal cone with a thread in the center instead of an old hub would be better. It would also need a perfectly straght and centered pipe attached to it, not easy to do. That is kind of leaving the area of low cost solutions. Edit: I just watched the balancing video of the commenter below, David167projects. Seems I just came up with a similar idea that he already had earlier. I'll have to think about the simplest and most accurate way to make this work for an alloy wheel.

    • @richbinaz
      @richbinaz 4 місяці тому

      @@Geiler_Daddy Yes, the set back may make it impossible to use the ball balancing method. Here is how I found where the CG is, relative to the hub face. ua-cam.com/video/fwqR13Do1XY/v-deo.html If the CG of the wheel is above the geometric center of the ball, it won't work If you can find a trailer hub (I heard they don't have grease seals in them) that fits your wheels bolt pattern and pilot diameter (perhaps with the aid of centric rings), you may be able to do a vertical balance, providing the friction is low enough. I have tried that with a regular hub, removing the grease seals and it works fairly well. One of the hubs had a lot of resistance after taking out the grease seals and I had to do other things, which didn't work out as well as I hoped. Here is that method. ua-cam.com/video/du5cTMqpIhY/v-deo.html The downside is you end up with a hub that can only balance one wheel pattern. I have seen that propellor balancing setup, which can work nicely. I don't have a sky hook to hang it from though. No welding gear or access to a lathe either. I do get the low cost aspect, it's what drives my designs. If the parts cost too much, may as well have a shop balance them. I have been keeping tabs on all the costs involved comparing them with the cost of having Discount tire do them and I am ahead of the game after 21 tires so far. Oh and knowing where the CG of the wheel is helps locate the optimal location of any add on weights, to avoid dynamic imbalance. I prefer stick on weight to rim weight now because of that vibration. I have a whole playlist of video's starting from square 1. The hopes, the disappointments, plowing thru to get solutions. It was a longer learning curve than I hoped for. ua-cam.com/play/PLWHom5FLIC6vZSy2jL7YB3xnY2jVi5Mgt.html Just saw this down the video's on the right side ua-cam.com/video/n86Rn2OWp88/v-deo.html It didn't work out - the reason is that centerpoint in the cap has to be exactly dead center. Not even a couple of thou off. If it's say .010" off center and the wheel assy weighs 40 lbs, that is the same as a .8oz weight at a radius of 8 inches. I'll let him know.
