Flannery O’Connor Pilgrimage, September 20, 2024
In this video I take you along with me down to Milledgeville, Georgia on a pilgrimage to the home of devout Catholic and noted American writer Flannery O'Conner. We will start with Mass at the beautiful St. Joseph Catholic Church in Macon, then on to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Milledgeville, where Flannery attended Mass. From there we go on to Andalusia Farm on the outskirts of town, where Flannery lived during her most prolific writing years. We take a tour of the grounds and then of the inside of the home which remains very much like it was when Flannery's lived and wrote there. Finally, I take you to her her final resting place to pay our respects. Flannery O'Connor to me, is the American version of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Flannery's Catholic faith very much inspired her writing. Living in a predominantly Protestant part of the country, her work centered on the struggle of the human soul to cooperate with God's grace and overcome weakness and vice. She was afflicted with Lupus at an early age and died at only 39 years of age.

    Many souls will be SAVED but also many souls will be lost. Many souls will be SAVED because of the Great Saving Effect that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ ✝️ did on the Cross of Calvary. But also many souls will be lost because many people will still refuse God even until the end of their lives.

    While I’ve never met Mr. Rick, I became acquainted with him a number of years ago through a mutual friend in Pittsburgh who was in the Alexian order at the same time as Mr. Rick. Over the years Mr. Rick and I have exchanged occasional e-mail messages and phone calls. In addition to this connection, I had opportunity (probably 45 years ago) of visiting the site of the monastery in Gresham, Wisconsin with the Pittsburgh friend. While the large novitiate was still standing as a part of the Abbey, both it and the original mansion were basically just stripped out or burned out hulks of the original structures. The location was remote, and so peaceful and beautiful. Before seeing it, I’d heard a lot of the history of the closed facility and the interaction with some members of the Native American Tribe. it was difficult to look at this now useless, but peaceful and beautiful location and facility. I have read “The Abbey and Me” and appreciate Mr. Rick’s documenting and keeping alive this unique part of history regarding religious life and conflicting cultures in America. I also appreciate this film and seeing and hearing Mr. Rick discuss this rather tragic series of events.

    The main is we can go back and forth and split hairs with where our beliefs differ. But the Fact is that the roman catholic church bears the fruit of 4 Billion dollars of paid out sexual assault on children in 2018 probably up from there (please look that up on google) How can you defend a organization that covered up sexual predators priests to protect the catholic name???? And then call it the only true church forcing those children who are adults now to need to back to their abusers. Wow what a great organization. I’m sure you will delete this comment so your supporters won’t see this. Quick question is the defense of an organization is just as bad as being involved??? 🤔🤔🤔🤔

    • @thedomesticmonk772
      @thedomesticmonk772 4 місяці тому

      I can defend it because Jesus founded it and guaranteed he’d protect it. People who make this argument are being disingenuous at best. The Church is made up of human beings and all of us are fallible and all of us are sinners. There is no organization, including YOUR denomination, which you have failed to identify, that has not had bad people associated with it. The Church isn’t wicked because there have been bad people in it, which they most defiantly have been. These men and women have the same free will we have and will be held to account just as we will be. In every generation from Judas to disgraced former Cardinal McCarrick there have been those who have caused scandal in the church. But there were 11 other Apostles who lived holy lives and built a Church that has lasted over 2000 years. Longer than any institution, nation or empire in the history of the world, as foretold in the book of Daniel. Likewise McCarrick’s shame in the last century has been offset by the likes of St. John Paul II, Saint Mother Theresa, Bishop Fulton Sheen, St. Maximillian Kolbe, Mother Angelica and countless other holy men and women who have lived the lives Jesus called them to live in His Church. I am a member of this Church because it is the only one Jesus founded. All others, yours too I’ll wager, were founded by man for man, proclaiming to know better than Jesus what he intended for His Church. It’s ironic you can see the sins of some in the Church but cannot see the pride and arrogance of that. How can I stay in the Catholic Church? Like St. Peter, upon whom the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church was founded, I ask, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” John 6:68 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    I was having enormous trouble in my new marriage. I was in great upsetment. I pretty much knew the marriage was over. As my wife and I lay in bed our backs towards each other, and I stroking my dog who was sleeping on the floor on my side of the bed. I was very confused and depressed. I was asking God through Jesus to help me. Iwas feeling sorry for myself. I heard a strong male voice, which sounded both reprimanding and loving at the same time. The voice said, "Dost thou have such little faith?" I don't know if it was the voice of God our Father, Jesus our Messiah, or a guardian angel. But I heard it as clear as day! I even looked over to my wife to see if she heard it. She was asleep. I looked at my dog, but he was still sleeping. I took courage from those words and think of it often ever since.

    I had left the church for 40 yrs. I finally returned (why is a long story, I had been deceived into New Age practices looking for inner healing) after experiencing what I believe was hell or one of the levels of hell while participating in an Ayahuasca ceremony (lots of scientist are researching and advocating psychedelics for past traumas- very very dangerous). I left mid-ceremony, suddenly realizing that I had offended God almighty ( after not believing in God for 40 yrs), and begged for forgiveness. I went to my local priest and gave a 40 yr confession. Amazingly he had just taken a class in deliverance with father Ripinger. He grabbed his prayer books and knew exactly which to say and even said some in Latin. (I swear, it felt like he was a doctor in an ER, knowing exactly what to do.). I had never met a priest and had no idea what to expect. (Not exorcism, only deliverance prayers.) Then he blessed the objects I brought- a rosary, some other unknown catholic medals I found from my parents, I huge container of Morton’s salt, and 2 gallons of water. I came prepared! He absolved me of my sins and gave me a penance of an entire rosary in the adoration chapel in front of the blessed sacrament. He had to give me a paper with instructions as I had never said a whole rosary. He also gave me a blessed St Benedict Medal which strangely I immediately misplaced before getting in the car. Afterward, I was very drained from all the crying and emotion during my confession. I came home. I had an ozone machine running for a couple hours while I was gone (it’s an industrial type air cleaner- I smoke). I could smell the strong ozone smell when entering the house. I opened the door to the bedroom and was met by a beautiful scent of incense. My windows were closed. Still, I ran outside to see if it was coming from there. Nothing. I came back to the bedroom and the beautiful scent remained. I immediately called my priest and left a message and told him. I said, “ I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing!” He said he thought it was a good thing. Thank you for sharing your story.

    People are baptised by the Holy Spirit, so was the thief on the cross. The thief responded to the prompt of the Holy Spirit. And yes the thief did act, his faith has fruits, then and then. Although our faith and our works don't have saving merits, we are saved only because of Calvary.

    • @thedomesticmonk772
      @thedomesticmonk772 6 місяців тому

      Thanks for the comment. I do think both faith and works play a part in our salvation as both scripture and the Church teach; Mark 16:16 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” John 3:5 “Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’” Romans 10:9 “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”. James 1:12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Matt 24:13 “But he who endures to the end shall be saved” (quotation from Jesus). James 2:24 “You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.” Matt 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” In just these few passages we have baptism, faith, confession in Christ, perseverance and works all cited as being necessary for salvation. How can they be ignored? Scripture must be interpreted in its entirety and in context. That’s why the Church has always taught that salvation is a process of grace that we must cooperate with. We were saved through baptism, we are being saved by cooperating with grace and we hope to be saved through perseverance. It is all summed up nicely by St. Paul; “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      @@thedomesticmonk772 faith and works are both necessary for salvation. Also faith and works have no savings merits. When Adam fell, his previous good works could not take him back to the garden of Eden. The only thing that saves us is unmerited Grace. Adam and Eve sinned and Died. "If you eat you shall die" My faith and works show my gratitude. But the faith and works of a doomed "dead" man cannot even contribute to his salvation as far as merits.

    • @thedomesticmonk772
      @thedomesticmonk772 6 місяців тому

      @@medusa210562 thanks for your comment. I disagree with your analogy however. What happened before and after Adam’s fall are two different things. In the first he was in a state of grace, working with God and in that case his works most certainly did have merit. Good deemed them good. After the fall he was in a state of sin and needed to be redeemed. Cooperation with grace is required for salvation. That’s why both the Church and scripture teach the importance of works. Scripture is loaded with references to it, here are just a few examples; “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Quote from Jesus) Matt 7:21 “God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.” Romans 2: 6-7 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. John 3: 20-21 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it-not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it-they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:22-25 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. James 2:24 And let’s not forget the parable of the sheep and the goats which I omit due to it’s length. These teachings cannot simply be discarded for some theory that was developed by Martin Luther. It had never been taught previously and for good reason. It is contrary to scripture which he also claims is the highest authority. You cannot have it both ways.

    Jesus did not tell the thief. "I tell you, Today you will be with me in paradise". Jesus said, "No one has ever gone to Heaven except the one who came from heaven- the son of Man" John 3:13. Jesus never went to heaven on that day he died on the cross." After his resurrection, Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I haven't yet ascended to my Father." John 20:17 "ESV" This is what Jesus really said to the thief. "I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise". He did tell the good thief exactly that actually, in just those words; “Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43. Moving the comma doesn’t really change the meaning at all. In either case, Jesus assures him he will be joining him in paradise. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Do you think good works are not a kind of prayer? Must people say prayer aloud to be heard? If Cabrini was meek and mild nothing would be done.

    • @thedomesticmonk772
      @thedomesticmonk772 7 місяців тому

      That’s one perspective, but I think it is quite a stretch. No one did more good works than Mother Theresa and she required her sisters to spend a minimum of 1 hour a day in prayer before the blessed sacrament. Prayer is central to our relationship with Jesus and to our faith. Scripture is full of references to Jesus himself going off to pray, they wouldn’t be there if it weren’t important. Scripture, the Church and the lives of the Saints all demand of us prayer and fasting. Let’s face it, prayer was completely lacking in this portrayal of St. Frances Cabrini. We can justify it anyway we want, but it was not present in the movie. Thanks for watching!

    Correlation does not imply causation. When you're handed a way of life, instead of doing the work to parse out what it is YOU actually believe and how you will show up in the world, sure. It's easy. It's prescriptive. And it's lazy.

      Being handed a way of life does not mean it’s easy or lazy. As these survey’s show many people were raised Christian and didn’t do the work required to truly live as Christians and are walking away from the faith. The results have not been positive and they’re none the happier for it. That is what this whole channel is about, encouraging people to do the work to learn their faith, love their faith and love their faith. Thanks for watching!

      I was thinking something along the lines of; Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Matt 7:21 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.” Romans 2: 6-7 “You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.” James 2:24 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. James 1:22-25 For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay everyone according to his conduct. Matt 16: 27 The dead were judged according to their deeds, by what was written in the scrolls. Rev 20:12 Behold, I am coming soon. I bring with me the recompense I will give to each according to his deeds. Rev 22:12 For starters…

These saints are known for their spirituality while St Patrick’s calling and great contribution to the Church was as an evangelist. Besides, this movie isn’t billed as a movie about Catholic spirituality, it was based upon his two letters, his confession (autobiography) and the one he wrote against Coroticus. It holds very true to the content of those letters. Thanks for watching!

    Well said! It is so disappointing that film makers continue to impose the ideologies of today on the events of the past. It is completely disingenuous and creates a falsehood narrative. These films are made for one reason only to make money and coin it in and they do so by affirming the narrative that they think people want to hear. I was planning on seeing Cabrini in the cinema but now I won't bother!
